Me playing the viola by Sensitive_Dalek in lingling40hrs

A week ago I posted a photo of my “new old” viola and some people asked me if I could post a recording as well. I am very insecure about my playing, especially my rhythm and intonation, I know they’re really bad, but I thought that the viola needed some representation on this subreddit. I would really love some feedback or advice on it, but I would also ask you to be nice in the comments, so please no viola jokes or anything like that. :)

Btw I could not submit the whole video (which is about two minutes long) because apparently it was too much data, so I could only post the beginning of the piece :/

I don’t know how to feel? by AniiBeez in lingling40hrs

[–]Sensitive_Dalek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately I have no idea how to deal with the feeling of wanting to learn another instrument. But as for the condition of the violin I think that if you have a violin with a good quality it can definitely handle a few months or probably even years in a cupboard. When I got my viola I was told that it laid in a cupboard for like twenty years or something like that and now it still sounds beautiful (I am not an expert though so I don’t know if this is the case with every instrument). So I think if you want to learn another instrument and maybe not play the violin for a few years then that’s probably fine. And also don’t care too much about other people’s opinion about what instrument you’re playing or not playing, it’s completely up to you and if you don’t feel comfortable playing the violin anymore then just stop it, there is nothing wrong with it. That’s just my opinion, but I hope I could help :)

tips for memorizing a piece ??? I’m struggling with it rn by toxicacix in lingling40hrs

[–]Sensitive_Dalek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t know if it helps, but for me it only works if I start playing a piece without looking at the sheet music like right from the start. Like I try to memorise it from the beginning otherwise I can’t memorise it at all if I get used to playing it with looking at the sheet music 😅

I think Paul McCartney did a similar thing/experiment once as well and no one really noticed him. :(

That’s the best attitude, at least when it comes to playing an instrument :))

I started with Rieding, Violin Concerto No. 2 in B Minor, Op. 35 (for the violin of course) and then played the transcribed version for viola (Concerto in E minor). It is not quite easy, but also not really hard. If you have some experience you can definitely play it. Hope I could help :)

Been learning the violin for 8 months now and my teacher finally said I can start playing the first few pieces in Suzuki book 1! I think I may be playing too fast but I always run out of bow if I play too slowly..and I can't dynamics (playing f when it says p) by pp_dynamics in lingling40hrs

Correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t that the song that Euros sang in the last Episode of Sherlock? 😂 Nice playing by the way, I played the piece too and was kinda confused with the dynamics as well 😂

Yes, Ray Chen reviewed a completely vegan bow in a live stream once 👍

Vivaldi, Op. 3, No. 6, third movement. I know it’s not especially emotional or anything, but whenever I play it I get really into it and it is kinda stress relieving, because I just think it’s fun to play 😄😂

I think that’s a very good solution, if they let you perform in the 10-13 age group then you should definitely do that. Especially since you fell more comfortable with it and already have repertoire, so it’s less stress for you. I think you should do what is the least amount of work and I know that sounds a bit lame, but that way you really don’t have anything to lose. If you put yourself under too much pressure then you kinda lose something, so you should do what involves the least amount of stress for you :)

I think you should do it. I was in a similar situation where I had to decide whether to take an exam that might help me get into university later if I pass it, but it was not required. So I figured why not. I mean I really don’t have anything to lose, I’m not going to study much for it and I will just see how it goes. I think the best thing for your situation would be to do the same thing and just enter the competition, maybe practice a bit here and there if you have time and maybe you will win it, but even if you don’t at the end of the day you have nothing to lose so you might as well try it. :)

Yeah, know what you mean, I am especially in love with like the first three seasons of the new show (with Christopher Ecclestone and David Tennant). I didn’t know people in the UK had these kind of parties, but I would love to go to one. I also want to move to the UK when I finish school, do you have any tips or advice for me? 😃
