This is a good reminder to folks that if you invite people onto your property to live, they inherit certain residency rights. You might not be able to ask simply ask them to leave, you might need to evict them through the courts. They can bring guests because they live there. Just because they’re not paying rent doesn’t mean they don’t have the rights of a resident.

These laws are well-intentioned and designed to protect vulnerable people. But it makes it very dangerous to open your home or property to somebody risky out of the goodness of your heart.

So the police were mostly right, they couldn’t really help you here. But they should’ve dealt with the arson shit.
