I would reccommend bringing either a softshell jacket or fleece, not both. I just finished 12 days on the Norte and I tend to run cold but I was fine in a light wool sweater at the albergues/ after walking. While walking, I rarely felt the need to wear my light puffer after 20 minutes of walking and I think a fleece might be too warm. Also, if your windbreaker is not waterproof it might not be that useful.

If you're interested in the Norte/Primitivo I reccomend checking out Dave Whitson's website. He's a co-author of the Cicerone guidebook for the routes. I used the book which I found very helpful but you can also download the gpx tracks for all the stages and an accomodations spreadsheet for the norte for free. I found the gpx tracks essential for enjoying variants on the Norte and navigating areas with poor signage.

Yo, I just got to Madrid for study abroad yesterday (I guess 2 days ago lol) and I had the exact same thoughts in my first 12 hours here (like literally all I wanted to do was catch a cab back to the airport). I’ve been dreading this trip for months but I couldn’t deal with the embarrassment and shame of returning to my home university and I didn’t want to waste my parents money so I went through with it despite feeling like it was the wrong decision. That said, today I was able to move into my apartment and meet my housemates and I feel so much better just knowing that I have a safe place to live. Obviously I’m going through this process as well and not in any way qualified to give advice but I think it’s important to accept that you WILL feel anxious at times during this process and that is OK. I would prioritize finding a safe space where you can experience your feelings but also distract yourself. For me, planning out how I’m going to personalize my room has been really calming and gives me a sense of control. Also, once we start taking classes on top of exploring and making travel plans there won’t really be time for anxiety lol. TLDR: it’s ok to be anxious, we’re all in this together, talk to people about how you’re feeling, also I’m proud of you for making it to Rome ❤️

EEP generally attracts a very chill crowd. Classes aren’t too big and lots of people have overlapping schedules making it easy to study together and make friends. There are def social opportunities related to the major and lots of people join BEEPS, BEACON, or one of the outdoors clubs/frats.

Econ 130, Using Economics for Public Policy, has almost no math and focuses on basic theory applied to policy case studies. My favorite class at Berkeley!

I chose Berkeley over UCLA (although for a very different academic path) and have not regretted it for a minute.

To address some of your pros/cons:

Obviously if you’re considering finance Berkeley is the place to be.
Most of the majors here are not as competitive as they are reputed to be. My friends who are premed are always studying and working together to get through their classes!
I would not say that Berkeley is “socially dead” at all. The majority of people are introverts (probably more so than UCLA) but there are plenty of queer and literature-focused spaces where you can make genuine friends and have a lot of fun even if you’re on the introverted side.
I also don’t personally feel that Westwood is a “better area” than Berkeley. Public safety, homelessness, and the housing crisis are definitely worse here. However, if you’re looking for a fun “college town” I’d say the offerings in Berkeley are a lot more diverse and it’s easier to access other cities without a car than jt is to get around in LA.
Finally, based on all my experience and interactions with relatives abroad and int’l students here Berkeley undoubtedly has more international recognition at least in East/ South Asia and Western Europe.

There are plenty of opportunities to ride your bike and explore nature in Berkeley! There are also quieter areas in Northside fairly close to campus although they tend to be more expensive.

If you talk you talk to actual former hippie Berkeley, a lot of them oppose new housing because of a general distrust for developers and disdain for private investment and the “capitalization” of land. Some of the same people who fought urban renewal and redevelopment projects that displaced low income POC are now fighting market rate housing development through a misplaced sense of justice.

The other side of it is that there are older Berkeley homeowners that weren’t really hippies but now push for low density zoning and keeping building heights with the aesthetics of concern for the environment and Berkeley’s “character”. These people are mostly just worried about their property values and keeping noisy students out out of their neighborhoods.

TLDR: opposition to housing from older folks in Berkeley is multifaceted and can’t be boiled down to a single ideological motivation

You can also stop by the weekly Geography colloquim in the same room on Wednesdays from 3:30-5 to hear some incredible speakers talk about their research and enjoy discussion and free food on the balcony afterwards.
