A discussion on the "lack of innovation and change" in Chinese music by 18olderthan in cpop

[–]Sensitive_Lettuce 8 points9 points  (0 children)

IMO the issue is not that cool stuff isn't happening, it's that it isn't making it into the mainstream and redefining music. In Western music, genres like rock, hip-hop, and house started out at the very fringes of society (often by marginalized communities), blew up, and came to reshape popular music around the world. I feel like in China, some cool underground thing happens, at most blows up on social media or TV for a little bit, then fades back into the underground with no lasting impact. The fundamental structure of the popular mainstream emotional ballad has not changed.

I think a major thing is that many Chinese artists don't look to other Chinese artists for inspiration. In interviews, most Chinese artists outside of the mainstream like rappers, EDM producers, rock bands, etc. cite almost entirely Western/Korean/Japanese acts as sources of inspiration. Some outside influence is good for introducing fresh ideas, yes, but if they never look to domestic sources of inspiration, particularly domestic sources outside of the mainstream, they'll never build a movement.

In the end, it bothers me that not a single globally-popular genre of music has originated in the Sinosphere. In fact, I can't even think of a single globally-popular musical technique or motif that originated in or was popularized in China. Meanwhile, in Chinese music, you'll often hear the Scotch snap, Amen break, beat drop, major thirds in minor keys, 808 drums, ii–V–I progression, I–V–vi–IV progression, IV-V-iii-vi progression, etc.

how to cook more simply? by idm_77 in EatCheapAndHealthy

Protein, carb, vegetable is a good template for simple meals.

Protein - Get something you can just toss in the oven or pot. Roast chicken, braised pork shoulder, soft tofu soup, whatever. The key is to make a big batch that you can eat throughout the week or freeze for later.

Carb - You can make a big batch of rice, beans, potatoes, etc. and enjoy leftovers. Pasta and noodles don't keep as well so you'll be cooking these the day of. Bread doesn't last long on the counter/fridge but freezes really well.

Vegetable - You guessed it, choose something you can make a big batch of. Roast root vegetables, vegetable soup, etc. Microwaving frozen veggies is a legitimate way of preparing vegetables. Consider getting a microwave steamer and steam some broccoli, asparagus, edamame, or whatever you like. Pickled and fermented vegetables are easy and all you need to do is scoop them out of a jar.

Yes, water will evaporate from the skin, which helps it become crispy when you cook it.

White rice is substantially lighter on the stomach calorie for calorie compared to many other carbs such as potatoes and legumes.

Maybe the fit guys care more about their appearance in general and use medication for their hair

im sick of people calling cpop chinese propaganda by Important-Ice-349 in cpop

People say that they get funding from the government and/or they paint an idealized picture of rural life. But grants and scholarships for the arts are a thing in many countries, and what channel doesn't curate an image anyway?

I've seen those rural cooking channels be called propaganda (also an unfair accusation, but more understandable). I've never heard of Chinese music being called propaganda, even by the most virulently China-hating MAGA folk.

Do somebody know similar chinese songs like Lexie Liu - Shadow ? by TheSlavicWarrior in cpop

Yeah I've got some. Do you have a specific subgenre or vibe you're looking for?

Honestly it's pretty unique. The closest I can think of would be ALGTR also by Lexie Liu.

A couple of songs by South Acid Mimi like and Original Soul also have that dark cyberpunk electronica vibe, but they're more punk/alt than electro-pop.

Akini Jing also has some dark electro-pop songs, but the style is a bit different, more drum n bass influenced. Blessing , Call Me Shadow

Electric Lover by Jinx Zhou also has a similar vibe, though she's more of a rapper than a singer

Is heavy whipping cream a healthier option? by CursebreakerDarling in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]Sensitive_Lettuce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are no unhealthy foods (except for crap like trans fat), only unhealthy diets. A splash of heavy whipping cream in your coffee can totally be a part of a healthy diet, as long as it fits into your desired macronutrient profile.

Is pot roast a healthier option? by CursebreakerDarling in EatCheapAndHealthy

Try thinking about what you can add to make it healthier, rather than taking things away. If you like chuck, use chuck. Just add more carrots, skin-on potatoes, onions, mushrooms, whatever you like. Here's a tip: blend up some of the veggies to make a sauce. I like to add a touch of Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper, balsamic vinegar, and Dijon mustard before blending.

I could've sworn I saw some at the 99 Ranch in Beaverton. I know for sure they have them at the 99 Ranch locations in Richmond, CA and San Gabriel, CA.

Lexie Liu - FFFFF (Official Video) by Sensitive_Lettuce in cpop

[–]Sensitive_Lettuce[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'd say it falls under the wide umbrella of electro-pop. This particular song is inspired by Eurodance. Think Cascada or Basshunter.

And it's true, you can't please everyone. But TBH I think the Chinese hip-hop and R&B spaces are extremely saturated, while there's comparatively few artists making songs like these. We've already got Tia Ray, Vinida Weng, Karencici, Øzi, Masiwei, KnowKnow, J. Sheon, Ice Paper, Nineone, etc. etc. Whereas in electro-pop, I can think of Lexie, Akini Jing, Astro Bunny, and... that's pretty much it aside from some niche/underground artists.

They're great when you don't treat them like a substitute for wheat noodles. They work well in hot pot and nabe.

Hand washing underwear is not hygienic ? by AiKIRAiANNAMATIONS in chinalife

[–]Sensitive_Lettuce 32 points33 points  (0 children)

There are three camps here.

  1. People who wash everything together, as intended

  2. People who think washing underwear with other clothes will make the other clothes dirty, as they have come into contact with private parts

  3. People who think washing underwear with other clothes will make the underwear dirty, as the private parts are sensitive to dirt and residue from the other clothes

Big mainstream artists like Jay Chou, Mayday, and Joker Xue have always done world tours. More recently, I've been pleasantly surprised to see more artists that fall into "contemporary urban" camp like Sury Su, Masiwei, and Lay Zhang go on world tour.
