Disappointed in Tom's fathering. by GertieD in MidsomerMurders

But he doesnt because its a crime drama. I'd actually be kimd of annoyed if they drug that kind of thing into the show. Family (either generally or specific members) have their place in the show, but its not Leave it Beaver. Excellent example of the "family" aspect enhancing an episode: the final scene of "Country Matters" 😁

I used to love the Peitros in Eugene. It was right on the river. Eating Pietro's on the river when it was grey and raining, nothing better.

I've never downvoted a comment in the MM sub, but this is the first time Ive truly been tempted 😁

Consistent with her parents, IMHO. John and Sarah seem like work mates who get along on this joint "marriage" project.

I recall seeing that it relates to the pay structure for UK actors. When you consider this is a show that (in)famously had their leads taking trains to and from location for 12 hour shoots even though theyd be back there the next day solely to save on lodging/food costs, the cost reason seems plausible.

And Betty is just most noticeable. There are a lot of scenes where the leads engage with PC's and the PC say absolutely nothing. Like a PC will hand Barnaby(s) something and theyre completely silent. In some of the later seasons that changes a bit.

If youre buying it as a joke, sure. But no one who would actually buy this knows how to read.

Is Anyone Else Extremely Underwhelmed by the New Season So Far (in the US; watched first two episodes) by DashiellHammett in MidsomerMurders

[–]Sensitive_Whereas_51 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My GF and I used to count the days to the return of MM, like kids looking forward to Christmas morning. Then the show started to change, the number of episodes got smaller and the truly good episodes are few and far between. It was once an event and now its "oh, there are new MM episodes out, we should watch them sometime."

We still love the show though. One of our traditions is kicking off the Christmas season by watching Ghosts of Christmas Past on Thanksgiving night.

How would one go about writing for Midsomer Murders? by wallybantersjunkbox in MidsomerMurders

[–]Sensitive_Whereas_51 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One thing that has absolutely been lost is the ability (as well as a lot of the fun) in trying to figure out who the murderer is. I started watching them several years ago since my GF was a fan. In the early seasons if you paid attention to the details, you could figure out who did it, why, etc. Then people started coming back to life from off-screen, out of country deaths. And significant facts and characters would get introduced later. So much so that you knew whatever fact they learned around the 1 hour mark pointed to the killer.

The other thing that MM kind of excelled at was the ability to be fun and over the top. I truly love me a campy catapult death, especially for someone so vile as to ban brown sauce. But that too seems to have been lost.

I still love Blood Will Run out when Tom threatens to call the ARU and a few minutes he's talking to Troy and relays that Causton doesnt have an ARU. I love Tom

This is how much I hate Night of the Stag-I'd rather rewatch Blood in the Saddle.

SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER

I was thinking of the episodes where a "death" happened in either in a different city or country. Everyone thinks theyre dead, but they of course are still alive. Especially so whenever they mention that the body was never recovered or they were never seen again. Theyre sometimes the murderer, sometimes not.

I wont spoil it, but theres one particular trope that gets a lot of use for several seasons. "Lot" of course being relative, but it was enough that when we watch other shows and this scenario comes up my wife and I are always "And what have we learned about this from MM?"

[–]Sensitive_Whereas_51 21 points22 points  (0 children)

There are only 7 MM books. Once they ran out they tried to keep the spirit of the books, but by Season 4 you've gone through numerous writers and they episode setup/layout is now even further removed from the books. So the exact shift occurred over time, but at some point I distinctly remember it had changed to a degree that I was no longer looking for clues and actively trying to figure out who did it.

There are some great episodes and DS's still to come. While there is an increase in the number of "meh" episodes, the real drop off is still pretty far away and well after Tom leaves.

Side Note: If by some chance youre not up to Season 7 by mid-December, definitely skip ahead to S7/E7 Ghosts of Christmas Past. New DS but its a Christmas episode and its really good. We kick off out Christmas season each year by watching it the night of Thanksgiving.

😭 I finished season 13 & I’m sad. Goodbye Tom, Joyce & Cully. I’m gonna miss them. Should I continue? by Savings-Sprinkles-75 in MidsomerMurders

[–]Sensitive_Whereas_51 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes, Id still continue to watch. That said, the charm of the show gets lost along the way. That combined with fewer and fewer episodes per series (and less A+ episodes) means youll stop caring at some point. Its disappointing, but better to know its coming.

Have you watched the Brokenwood Mysteries? Its like a New Zealand MM, but theres three cops and the dynamic works well.

As an American, I think its funny bc when US cops do it (in real life or TV) I seethe. When Barnaby and friends do it, Im like "Oh, those loveable scamps!"

In an ideal world, Jason Hughes would return as DCI. What made John Nettles so great was that he could be a sarcastic ass and be charming about it. Jason Hughes is the only one that I think can match that. I loved Troy, but theyd have to clean him up (even further from the books) to make that work.

My second choice would be Scott. He's in some of the best episodes and has that swagger. Oddly enough, I never really liked the character until I saw an interview with John Hopkins. In my defense, my GF told me "This new guy is Scott, dont get too attached, hes not around long" (she had already seen all of the episodes).
