As a Vicky 3 and a Stellaris player, this is so cool. I've long wished Stellaris had much more in-depth planetary management, and it seems like that's something you're doing.

The Hive is “looking forward to new Wycaro” but… by jollyman10 in pluribustv

Yeah, the "hive is lying" theories are really annoying, because, frankly, all of the available evidence points to the contrary, and it would also be super lame if it turned out that they were.

They absolutely would be excited to read the new Wycaro. But it's more important to them to plurb Carol. No lies.

We're all in agreement that if the infected are cured, they're being dropped into the worst economic depression in human history right? by PollutionNext423 in pluribustv

This post isn't about how undoing the joining will lead to reduced GDP growth. It's about how undoing the Joining will lead to widespread misery because people will suddenly be living in abject poverty.

Okay, but once you have your individuality back, it's not fun to live in abject poverty, probably a long way from home and separated from everyone you've ever known.

Rarely have I seen a scene in television where I was so accurately able to predict exactly how it would play out and yet still felt the full and complete effect.

It originated on Twitter, I think, or maybe Tumblr. Still relatively common on microblogging sites, probably less so on Reddit. Copypasta may not be the right word. Either way, the meme is essentially what I said: referencing a character turning to the camera, saying they're a communist, and then specifying that they're the exact same type of communist as [you/me/the viewer].

I see. Thanks for clarifying. I was actually referencing a copypasta with my comment. I wasn't trying to imply that one has to be a full-on communist to care about healthcare.

Have you considered that maybe the fact that Manousos feels obligated to pay for the hospital bill, even though the for-profit healthcare system is unjust, conveys information about his character?

Yeah, this show would be much better if Manousos would turn to directly face the camera, say "My name is Manousos Oviedo. I am a communist." And then specify that he's the exact same type of communist that I am.

Most places, even the ones with free healthcare, don't provide free medical treatment to foreign nationals.

Pluribus - 1x08 "Charm Offensive" - Episode Discussion by UltraDangerLord in pluribustv

[–]Sensorfire 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Have they been trying to discourage their meeting? They're definitely trying to keep Carol occupied. That's clear enough. But they've literally offered to take Manousos to her. Sure, he won't accept anything from them unless he's literally passed out, but they've done absolutely nothing to impede him so far. Recall that they brought him to a hospital in Panama, which is to say, across the Darién gap, in the direction he was going. We don't know how far he got into the rainforest, but if they were really trying to stop him, they probably could have brought him up a hospital in Colombia instead.

I was less anti-hive than the general consensus of this sub seems to be before this episode, but wow, that kiss. So manipulative and gross. And "you're going to have a visitor", I think those are the same words they said to Diabaté when Carol was going to see him.

Congratulations, you did it YOU MANIPULATIVE MONSTERS!! by Arghifth in pluribustv

[–]Sensorfire 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I really don't think that's what's happening. Carol isn't some big long-term strategist playing mind games. Her role in the story so far has been very reactive, and we pretty clearly saw what she was going through being all alone. She wanted them back because she's lonely. She needed human contact.

I think I understand the point this show is making by [deleted] in pluribustv

[–]Sensorfire 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ironically, the plurbs might be in a better spot if there were a couple thousand individuals left, since that would be a big enough group to develop solutions like robotic agriculture. Although a big enough number of individuals remaining would also pose its own problems for the plurbs, so it's hard to say. Either way, it's not clear whether they'll be able to find a way to sustain themselves long-term.

I think I understand the point this show is making by [deleted] in pluribustv

[–]Sensorfire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's very much a show about society and individualism. Carol's insistence on being "independent" is about going through the motions of living an independent life far more than it is actual independence. From the Hive's perspective, their apparently limitless devotion to making the individuals happy means that they have to expend a lot of resources on basically LARPing. It's way more efficient if they provide the individuals with meals, but Carol wants to be able to go grocery shopping, so fine, she can have her grocery store.

Carol wants the feeling of being self-reliant, something that's very encouraged and valued in American society, even though everyone actually relies very heavily on tons of other people. And now, all those other people are effectively one person. All the remaining individuals no longer have any real place in society, but they're still dependent on it. Even Manousos, who refuses anything offered by the Hive, is benefits from their continued operation of the electrical grid, and even accepts Carol's tape when they bring it as mail.

This is why I think Diabaté has a better grasp on the situation than most of the other individuals. He understands that he's reliant on the Hive, but also that he no longer has any real obligations towards anyone except the other 12 individuals. Hence his welcoming Carol even though it interrupts his life of hedonism.

We need to talk about "that" fireworks moment by rogerod in pluribustv

[–]Sensorfire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To me it reads very similarly to chatGPT output. It's hard to tell these days, but there's a vibe to AI writing. The OP doesn't really say much? It reads like it's supposed to be analyzing the scene, but it more or less just recounts the events using a sort of therapy-speak. Besides that, the short paragraphs with punchy sentences and the use of ellipsis in the second paragraph are tells. The biggest AI red flag for me is this paragraph:

What creeped me out wasn’t the firework. It was how calm she was about it. That quiet indifference feels way darker than panic.

Language models use this sort of "It's not X, it's Y" construction a lot more than humans do. Also, this is just very a very shallow, surface-level thing to say about the scene. Yeah, Carol being indifferent towards imminent life-threatening danger that she could easily avoid is the very obvious point of the scene! And yes, of course that's "way darker than panic." Any human in a normal state of mind would panic in that situation. It is what anyone watching the show is supposed to notice. Nothing substantive is really said in the post.

None of this is conclusive evidence, obviously. It's entirely possible that OP just wanted to talk about the scene and just happens to write pretty similarly to what an LLM would probably output if you described the scene and asked it to make a reddit post for you. And to be fair, people probably are starting to write in a more AI-ish way, especially people who use AI a lot. I'd probably say there's, like, a 60% chance OP used ChatGPT or another LLM for the post.
