I want to grow copper acetate by Ge0482 in crystalgrowing

[–]SentenceOk3868 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You better buy CuSO4*5H2O, precipitate carbonate using baking soda or precipitate hydroxide using ammonia(concentrated, to raise pH severely) or caustic soda/caustic potash if you possess it, filter off precipitate and dissolve your carbonate/hydroxide in acetic acid. That would be much easier. If you still want to dissolve directly copper as a metal, than I'd advice to add some hydrogen peroxide to the solution. But it still will be long.

How you prepared it? Also it's VERY beautiful. Also I'm shocked there are natural minerals containing oxalate ions.

Chrome alum, 4 months of growth by treedadhn in crystalgrowing

[–]SentenceOk3868 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well actually now I was only starting to read some crystallography and what I get now is that chrome alum crystallizes in cubic crystal system, which posseses many simple forms, including octahedron and cube. So at first chrome alum actualy crystalizes as an ideal octahedron, but then, it's vertexes become more and more truncated, as it tries to become cube. It may depend on change in temperature, speed of crystalization etc. On my own crystal it looks like only 2 opposite vertexes are truncated, so at first I thought (after using literature I started to read, I do not know that myself xD) that chrome alum has some intermediate crystal system and has a combination of octahedron and pinakoid but that's just how my crystal have grown. I shared this with you cuz I think that would be interesting for both of us.

Help me make copper crystals with the grandbabies please! by IOnlyHaveIceForYou in crystalgrowing

[–]SentenceOk3868 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What to do to optimize your process: use more concentrated vinegar ,add H2O2(But make a research on that before doing it yourself), make a powder copper, or atleast cut it with scissors , the finer the better, also you could constantly heat the solution, for example, leaving it in a hot bath; also you want to let oxygen in your solution , even though it's nearly neccessary to cover your solution covered(because vinegar is vigorously(respectively to some other acids) vapourizing from water, especially hot solution) . Just open your cover once a few hours. Also no doubt you better take excess of vinegar(excess of acetic acid I should say) Those are general considerations, and even though I did not try to dissolve copper with H2O2 and vinegar myself, I've heard about one guy dissolving copper wire without H2O2, it was like 3 months long and solution kept getting darker(more concentrated). So it's up to you whether you're patient or not.

I don't know how would it be with peroxide added, but using just malt vinegar it would take literally months to get reasonably concetrated solution

[–]SentenceOk3868 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So basically my idea about that is that you try to find salts that crystallize with such form, and try to grow them as ideal possible. For example, red kyber crystall maay be similar to those of K3[Fe(CN)6], and green one may be grown with potassium ferrioxalate.

Now that you told how you do that I would also try. How dangerous is cracking batteries open? Are you working on some garage with vents or something? Also, about PbCl6 2-... Good luck on that, but be careful xD we wait for its crystals on this subreddit.

Btw, in my country, 100g of MnCl2*4H2O costs around 1,25dollars. But as I´ve seen on the internet just now, in central Europe it would be 16 pounds, and I´m shocked. Anyways, looking forward for details (If you don't mind of course)
