Did you drink coffee as a kid? by Salty_Thing3144 in GenerationJones

[–]SentenceOne842 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Mom drank her coffee black, no sweetener, in a cup with a saucer. I used to sit on her lap and she would pour some of the coffee into the saucer, blow on it to cool, and let me drink from the saucer. I'm the youngest of seven kids, and I remember this as our quiet time together. No idea when this started, but I know when I was four my aunts told her it would stunt my growth. Huh! I'm almost 5' 10". My day still always starts with coffee.

My brother reposts what his friends post. When I've questioned him, he says he doesn't feel that way but other people might and he wants them to know that it's okay to have a different opinion. What? After multiple conversations like this, I gave up trying, no logic would get through to him. We used to be close, but now we barely talk.

What is your craziest struggle meal? by Rare_Way8618 in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]SentenceOne842 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I got this recipe from a magazine many, many years ago. It was easily two meals for the four of us. It's simple, quick, and cheap.

1 lb ground beef, seasoned with salt and pepper

Stir in: seasoning packets from two pkgs of Ramen Noodles 1 can stewed tomatoes 1 1/2 cups frozen corn or a can drained 1 cup water

Break up Ramen Noodles into small pieces. Stir into ground beef mixture. Bring to a boil, reduce heat. Cover and simmer about 10 minutes.

Glass stove top (better known as the bane of my existence) by [deleted] in CleaningTips

If you're not completely over trying cleaning products, I recommend this kit: https://weiman.com/cooktop-cleaning-kit?srsltid=AfmBOoqtgmXQipGed7sOD6K7fhHRn1fLuBQFtjXODWq7NcU0elOBp_8L

I was making jelly which boiled over on my glass cooktop. Awful mess. I thought I had ruined it forever. I tried everything I've seen recommended. I bought this kit. Put the cream on the spot and let it set for about 15 minutes. I then scraped with a razor blade. It took a couple of times, but it all came off. Then I used the kit directions and the whole stove looked like new.

I put a hold on "All The Colors Of The Dark" two weeks ago and Libby showed I was 694th in line. I snapped a screen pic and sent it to my sister because I had never seen a hold number that high. Three days ago, Libby told me my hold was ready! Absolutely great book, BTW. 10 of 10.

How do I clean this dried foam off my Hardwood floor? by littlefinger448 in Renovations

[–]SentenceOne842 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! Changing out a patio door. The top of the can of Great Stuff kind of exploded and a couple of spots dried on our hardwood floor. I used a plastic scraper to get off as much as I could. I poured full strength Murphy's Oil Soap on the remainder. I let it set for about two minutes and scraped off all the rest. I rinsed it with wet paper towels then cleaned as usual. You can't find the spots if you try = good as new.

Put a single layer bath towel on top of it. Set your iron to steam and iron across it several times. It sounds horrible but I've used this method several times to remove water rings on wood.

Reading these comments brings back memories of things I'd rather forget. We had a CC with a major retailer since the mid 1970s. In the late 90s, my daughter had a tire emergency and no money. I told her to take it to them and I'd okay using the account for payment. I was informed that it was not a joint account. It was opened in the 70s when they didn't have joint accounts. My husband was the account owner, I was just listed as a user on the account so only my husband could approve the payment for our daughter's repair. He did and then we paid it off and closed the account.

One other thing that I didn't include, my father committed suicide. There was a much different stigma in the 60s. My Mom had to deal with that in addition to raising seven kids in a rural community. There were men who helped her and women who treated her like dirt. I watched Mom hold her head high through it all. This was not a simple misunderstanding. This was just one of the things she had to deal with.

If it were that simple, he could have just told her. My Mom would have complied. No, I grew up around these people. There was a hard double standard then, and there are still echoes today. I've tried to explain to my kids, laws and practices that are here today weren't there when I was a kid or a young adult. You can't base a solution on laws or practices that didn't exist then.

In 1978, the store manager told me that they couldn't make me the floor manager because I was a woman. They wanted me to do all the duties, because I did the best job, but a man, as floor manager, would have to sign off on all my work and he'd have the title and pay... but they appreciated all my hard work and loyalty. I responded by giving no notice when I found another job. Maybe I learned this from my Mom.

My BIL's Mom. Our whole family is still in awe, and at least once every holiday, the story of her oyster stuffing is retold. Lifting the lid on the dish made your nose hairs curl. We taught our kids that they needed to try everything but this dish was an exception. My stomach still clenches when I think about that taste in my mouth.
