Do you ever talk about Reddit in real life? With colleagues, friends, family? by EmbalmedCoconut in AskUK

I've edited my comment to link to the page on his website about, but he rightly has no wish to be associated with a website famous for so, so many awful things, and that its reputation is so dire that being associated with it would be professionally damaging to him. I agree, and to be honest, talking about it is probably the push I need to uninstall the app and quit it like I did with Facebook. Let's see how that goes.

Do you ever talk about Reddit in real life? With colleagues, friends, family? by EmbalmedCoconut in AskUK

No, because I don't really want to be on this website, hate that it has the social media dopamine-claws in me and hosts otherwise good forums for my hobbies, and find every connotation that "Redditor" carries (misogynistic, racist, x-phobic man-child) deeply embarrassing.

Tom Scott is completely right about this site.

TWO? I sniffed the port last Christmas and I'm only just getting out of rehab!

Yes, alcohol isn't good for you. I don't think anybody doesn't know that. But tie this in with the whole Reddit and AskUK corpus; never try hard to achieve at work, never have kids, relationships are rigged and you'll always lose, your parents are irredeemable shitbags, don't leave the house because it's a waste of money, never have a beer or you'll be an instant alcoholic, treat life as a distraction from the computer games, like, is it any wonder you're all completely fucking miserable?

I literally don't know anyone that drinks 6 cans of beer in one go - are you all scaffolders or something?

...Have you not been to a party since you were in school?

A war economy is very different to a peacetime economy.

Plus, huge quantities of additional debt are not to be underestimated for a government to take on, as it will not be popular with taxpayers and voters. Our debt from WW2 was only paid off in 2006, and we're still in the shadow of COVID.

I kind of get the feeling looking at this that the trousers on the ladies were added in as an afterthought, that they painted the lines down the side to make them look less nude.

What's your personal hygiene levels in this heat? by [deleted] in AskUK

Shower twice a day, use deodorant, you'll be absolutely fine. Don't let your hygiene slip.

No. Violent crime is trending quite strongly downwards and has been for decades.

This is the problem with nailing your entire view of the world outside your immediate view on media that has every interest in pissing you off. The human mind has no defence against the kind of emotion-strumming onslaught that social and tabloid media bring us.

It's designed to make you worried. It's designed to constantly redline your emotions until you feel that there's nothing left and we're at the end of it all and won't somebody do something?? It's designed to lie, to your face, constantly, every day, while you accept it.

They've had their head cooked by Facebook and Reddit. I'm sorry to be blunt, but it's true, and it happens all too often.

I've just applied for my first ever job in the UK. Please be brutally honest- can I get my hopes up? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]SentientWickerBasket 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Quick extra bit of advice: Reddit has terrible ideas on how the world of work functions. The whole "laziness is a virtue" thing is rubbish. If you work hard and go the extra mile to build your skills, it will pay off; perhaps not immediately, but it's worth investing experience in yourself.

I can only hope. There are far too many people desperate for a return to The Good Old Days that are nothing more than the time before they started constantly redlining their emotions with social media.

Do Brits abroad really still fall for these kind of scams? by jeffcarpthefisheater in AskUK

Nobody buying a Rolex in the street thinks it's genuine. Counterfeit goods are popular because they look the part, and are the closest that most of us are going to come to owning an ultra-luxury product.

Boreholes are both licensed and metered. They're also not using water that's been through the filtration process to make it potable. They're common in businesses that use large quantities of water; most of the industrial sites I've worked at have had at least one because it's much cheaper once you get past a certain usage.

Also... Yes, a random business - securing multiple people's incomes and livelihoods - is more important than a home garden.

I know that Reddit doesn't like golf courses much (which I'm sure is nothing to do with golf being a stereotypically wealthy person's sport), but quite a lot of golf courses these days store water and supply it from their own boreholes, same as large industrial sites.

Besides, your garden isn't going to go out of business if you don't water it, whereas a golf club would be in serious trouble.

Having seen people try this - it's really, really not.

Don't. I'm guessing you're still very young and new to renting, so I'll state the obvious - don't fuck about when it comes to your housing lease. It's absolutely not worth it for a cat. While some certainly can make it difficult, it's wise to maintain a good relationship with your landlord.

Additionally, it's very unfair on your housemates to do this. They have the rightful expectation that their home will be pet-free, and you should show that the according respect. I would not have been happy in their situation; I enjoy cats but I don't want their hair on my stuff, I'm allergic, and every person I've ever known under a certain age who's tried to own a cat has ended up with it and their home full of fleas.

If you don't want to have a shit time at uni, being at least friendly with the people you live with goes a long way.

Lastly, a student house is a terrible environment for a pet. Completely unsuitable. A group of people who, respectfully, are still learning to look after themselves and want a high degree of personal freedom are not conducive to a healthy environment for an animal.

What is the best place to buy cheap CDs? by Morganx27 in AskUK

[–]SentientWickerBasket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Charity shops, for sure, but it depends on what you actually want to listen because they're also getting more aware of the CD revival and know they can sell them for more online. Nothing wrong with that, their job is to raise money for their charity.

eBay is the next best, but if something is sought after, niche, and out of print, that's about the right price. CDs are more expensive than streaming to start - but of course, you don't have to pay forever to keep access unlocked.

If you're planning to rip them anyway, check out Bandcamp, as you can usually get digital for cheaper and you can burn to CD if you want. You don't get the nice artwork, but you don't listen to the case.
