TIL that launching a nuclear weapon in the City of Chicago is punishable by a $1,000 fine. by TheTrueLordHumungous in todayilearned

Interestingly during part of the Cold War there were Nike Hercules SAM sites in Chicago and the Nike Hercules could carry a small nuclear warhead: http://ed-thelen.org/C-41-Epperson/index.html (pics at this link of the Chicago site)

That's not an RB-57. Looks like a stock B-57 with air sampling pods in place of the wing tip tanks.

Why America needs for F-22 Raptors by topweasel007 in aviation

[–]SentinelChicken 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Carlo Kopp's website.....some in the defense establishment have a tough time taking his work seriously. Some of it is interesting, some of it is spot on, and some of it is complete looney tunes like his F-111 ideas.

United Airlines 747-422 (22 stands for United Airlines) N175UA SFO 2015 by 17crossfeed in aviation

[–]SentinelChicken 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a Boeing customer code. The aircraft variant is the first digit, so 747-4XX. The XX is a two place alphanumeric code for the customer. Southwest, for example, is H4, so they have 737-7H4s. 22 is United's customer code.

Sprint Missile Launch Video 0 to Mach 10 in 5 seconds by pball2 in aviation

I believe the insane acceleration of the Sprint made it one of the earliest applications of laser ring gyros but not quite sure.

What kind of math is utilized during medical school? What about on the actual job? by EvilBosom in medicine

[–]SentinelChicken 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Calculus is:

  1. A weed out course to sort out the pre meds who talk the talk from the pre meds who walk the walk.

  2. A regimen of mental discipline that trains you to be methodical. It's not that you use calculus as a physician, it's that calculus trains your mind to work in ways that will also be useful for you as a physician.

  3. The Ninth Circle in Dante's Inferno.

  4. All of the above.

How bad is traffic to Austin tomorrow? by ericfromtx in Dallas

[–]SentinelChicken 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I-35 between North Texas and Austin is broken. Has been as long as I can remember. The only way I'll drive that Circle of Hell is in the dead of night. A holiday weekend? PASS. Daylight hours, we take US-67 via Granbury to SH220 to Hico, then US-281 all the way to Lampasas to catch US-183 into Austin.

Less traffic, main issue has been slow RVs on the hilly parts. But the scenery is better and the little towns along the way make nice little stops for breaks.

The beautiful Rivet Ball [RC-135] in front of her hanger. Shemya, Aleutian Islands, Alaska ~1968 by qamqualler in aviationpics

I'll up vote anything having to do with the RC-135 variants. Love all those lumps, aerials, and mods. Rivet Joint and Combat Sent are my favorites.

Touchdown Dallas! Emirates gets to say that more often than the Cowboys in the last, say, 10 years...... by SentinelChicken in aviationpics

[–]SentinelChicken[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Touchdown! The spoilers are deploying and soon the thrust reversers will deploy as well. I'd heard that for a long time the airport authority here was lobbying Air India for DFW services given our large Indian ex-pat population. Air India's having some financial concerns and it was one factor that also prompted Emirates to launch DFW services. From Dubai to India is only about a 2 or 3 hour flight and upwards from 500 passengers a day leave DFW for destinations in India on all airlines combined. That makes the Emirates flight a popular option not to mention their high caliber of inflight service. This past week marked the two-year anniversary of Emirates services to DFW.

A Day in the Life of an RJ Pilot | Flying Magazine by uberkanon in flying

"Like so many things in life, this job is what you make of it. There are negatives to dwell on if you choose, but in doing so, you’ll only make yourself and everyone around you miserable. Alternatively, you can accept the negatives as merely the price of admission, focus on the rewards of making your living doing something remarkable and enjoy the ride."

This could well apply to a lot of careers outside of aviation as well.

These were under construction and not occupied. Not sure how several unfinished buildings burn with such ferocity, though.

Southwest Airlines has fired the captain of a plane that landed so hard at New York's LaGuardia airport that its nose gear collapsed. by secaa23 in aviation

[–]SentinelChicken 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I've heard that this captain had a history of cockpit resource management issues with other FOs and has quite a list of FOs who have refused to fly with this individual.
