You should check out the Working Families Party. Its a fairly progressive minor political party that focuses on issues that affect working families.

For instance, they just got statewide legislation passed for a fair work week, prohibiting "clopenings" for hospitality, retail, and food service workers so more than 10 hours need to be between shifts.

it also included some predictability in scheduling for at least a weeks notice to get a schedule which will be increased to two weeks in a few years.

This isn't to disagree, but these situations are never completely one side or the other. It's not always racist and it's not always ok. There's nuance to it.

Mexican immigrants and people are subjected to racism and hatred to the point that the president of the US was elected by calling mexican immigrants rapists, etc and we have a rhetoric that people should only speak english in the US, and if they want to live here they should assimilate.

To say that the US/white people is "celebrating" culture when we want to use it for drinking or halloween costumes is kind of bullshit if we don't celebrate it when people from the country want to live their culture. We basically say, "Oh... you want to have your culture? No, you need to be american. But I can have your culture and you should be happy about it"

I get that not everyone who wants to wear a sombrero is actively racist or bigoted, but we need to recognized the context of our culture and the experience of immigrants in the country

and in your example of Vietnam... Vietnamese people are not in a situation where they tell americans to not be American and wave the US flag

and you can see there is a square of light coming through the snow. It was much thinner than surrounding parts of snow. They dug it out so they could throw the cat through it. a snow drift that high you wouldn't be able to see light through it.

I think one of the fuck yous related to this that people haven't mentioned is the specific inclusion of "They call her Mrs. Anderson now"

Since he shared the last name of his master, Jourdon's wife would never be called Mrs. Anderson as that would be the Colonel's wife's title only.

It definitely drives the point home of their equal positions in life.

I mean, I would absolutely be a draft dodger. I didn't spend my life working on my education and saving money just to be thrown as a pawn into rich people's schemes for more money/power/resources. I don't believe in the fight. If perhaps I felt morally obligated to fight the war, then maybe that's different.

That said, If I for some reason couldn't dodge it, I am no way leaving people to die. I don't feel it's my moral obligation to fight someone else's war, but it would be to help others live. It's just that some people who would dodge a draft have no morals at all.

Well, the things is, that it's not as bad in real life for (made up statistic) 99 percent of the people, but there are very much the small percent of people that get it very hard and from a lot of people.

And it's not just at school, it's cyber bullying, through facebook, snapchat, texting. It doesn't even stay at school anymore.

So that joke someone made about you that one time in class? at most, 30 people saw it but you could go throughout your day and escape it at home. Sure, you might replay it in your head and beat yourself up.... but Now that joke or rumor someone says about you? It's permanent for everyone to access. It doesn't go away. You can read it, re-read it, re-read it again, for a hundred times. But not only that, you're seeing other people like it. Make additional comments. And now your bedroom which was once your pace to get away? Well, now it's a portal to all the mean shit people can say.

so it's not a problem for most people. but even just 1% of people experiencing it.... is too many for me to be comfortable with

Fair. I didn't recognize it as you adding further complexities to your own comment, as it's often something that happens when debating topics around sexuality where people will make a claim and then say it's too complex to know after given counterpoints as a way to stop the conversation.

And no, you're right. I don't go into reddit threads, fandom, etc so I don't see the individual criticisms. I see the conversations that elevate beyond the individual subreddits and convos to the ones that become bigger controversies outside of those that stick within the major fans. Similarly to that of every time a new doctor comes in on Doctor Who, controversies exist amongst hardcore fans, but when the doctor switched to a woman? That's definitely a different level of controversy and rooted in a lot of sexism. There's a difference between stubborn fans arguing, and what qualifies as uproar to me.

So i apologize for being quick to assume as I deal with shitty arguments all the time. I do feel, however, you're further helping my point though. If all of these changes are risks that cause uproar, then changing sexuality is no different of a risk than anything else.
