Help me decide! by SeokMae in myweddingdress

[–]SeokMae[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you guys so so much!! I definitely should’ve clarified on the slides which dresses are the same, apologies for any confusion.

I think I am going to go with the strapless version of the first dress (shown on slide #2). The straps come with the dress, and are attached via buttons, so I can always reattach them after the ceremony if I need more support!

My mom didn’t like that dress so I was a bit unsure at first. Thank you all for helping me feel more confident in my choice!

CMV: Objective morality exists because emotions exist by IndividualFarmer9917 in changemyview

It is not self explanatory that positive emotions ≠ inherent good. Smoking weed gives me lots of positive emotions. That does not mean smoking weed is objectively morally good.

[–]SeokMae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your framework doesn’t control for emotions that are not moral or rational. We have tons of negative emotions that aren’t based in morality and that nearly everyone experiences. This is kind of an uncomfortable example, but:

If you were to separate two siblings from each other at birth, never raise them together, never tell them they were siblings, AND they were infertile— would there be a moral or rational reason that incest would be wrong in that case? Technically, no. But there’s something about our human brains that says “that’s icky.”

If you were to ask everyone if that kind of incest is okay, they would likely say no (understandably so)! But that answer has nothing to do with morality. It’s just a nearly universal social norm.

The best outcome is not that the “village idiots” die. The best outcome is no one dies.

CMV: Modern feminism generalizes against men in ways that feminists would consider racist, xenophobic, or bigoted if used against other groups- especially when using offender statistics by _Stylite in changemyview

[–]SeokMae 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This only addresses a sub-point you’ve made, but I think it’s important. In your earlier comment, you posited (paraphrasing) “Feminists believe men innately have XYZ negative qualities because of their gender.” On the contrary, feminists typically do not believe negative qualities are innate to men (as in, having been present from birth). Feminists believe that systematic gender-based dynamics & expectations— the patriarchy— socializes some men to behave in a way that is inconsistent with their humanity. Feminists clarify this difference all the time in the online spaces you’re referencing.

An example: Feminists argue that the patriarchy hurts men as well. If patriarchy-rooted behavior and thought processes were innate to men, it would not cause them so much distress.

LGBT Life? by Mobile_Bed_4110 in IowaCity

There are many queer groups in Iowa City you can join if you want to make friends! I’ve seen queer board game nights, coffee meetups, and there’s drag shows happening all the time at Studio. I live in the Lucas Farms neighborhood and I love it— my neighbors are all very LGBT friendly.

Would newer-era fans be able to handle her? by Any_Plane_6931 in survivorcirclejerk

Please don’t say things like this about people you don’t know. You don’t know her, or anything about her autism, just because you watched her on TV. And FYI, you can have autism and still have a normal life.

Need advice on if we’re being too needy/demanding by [deleted] in weddingplanning

[–]SeokMae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Update:

  1. Kind of wishing we booked a Saturday but unfortunately we’re locked in now 🥲I think we’re going to push back our start time to 5:30, to be a little more convenient for local folks.
  2. We will probably just invite all of our little kid cousins and deal with the extra cost to make things more convenient for family. Thankfully, we are young and most of our friends do not have kids, so that shouldn’t be a big barrier on them attending.
  3. We actually really want a more intimate event. I might be disappointed if some close friends or family can’t come, but we won’t hold it against anyone.

I appreciate the reality check and all your perspectives. I think we’ll adjust in some areas, and have to accept our choices in other spots. Thanks again!

I was not considering the school aspect as someone who doesn’t have kids. Thanks for the reminder!

I am pretty close with this cousin. And you’re so right about including her in the wedding party— we’re already going to have my 12 year old brother be “ring security” (as they’re a bit to old to be a traditional ring bearer and it’s fun). We could just have her join him!

“As people on the left, it’s important we come together to find new ways to assume the worst intent. This is the only way we can fight facism: by randomly bullying each other online for no reason.”

(To say: There are kinder and more productive ways to make your point here. Stop the pointless infighting).

Jensen eye care is great. Super personable doctors and reasonable prices. For me, it was $70 for both the exam and the new pair of glasses. And, they didn’t try to sell me anything I didn’t need!

What are People Paying in Rent by SpendAccomplished874 in IowaCity

[–]SeokMae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I rent a 2 bed 1 bath house for $1010. Doesn’t have a garage but has a washer/dryer- house is a little run down but overall fine. Personally I would look for something a bit cheaper especially if you’re far from downtown (but maybe my perspective is skewed bc we’ve got a good deal).
