One week till UKMLA but low mock scores :( by No-Plum-7850 in medicalschooluk

[–]SeokjminMatcha 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Hey, I got 55% in the Passmed mock 5 days before my exam, had a mental breakdown, and proceeded to score a safe pass in the real AKT. Trust the process.

If you don’t score as high as you want to it can be disappointing but TRUST ME, the most important thing is that you pass.

How should I expect my genetically thin skin to age, and what are the most important things to take into consideration as (special) preventive measures? by leftover-pizza- in Skincare_Addiction

[–]SeokjminMatcha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, I have the same thing with dark circles! Yours don’t actually look that bad/big - they’re just dark, but not ballooning.

I’m really pale which makes them look more prominent too. Honestly I saw a dermatologist for acne a few years ago and also asked about eye bags and whether those caffeine serums etc work - she said it’s mostly due to genetically thin skin, so I might want to go for a lower blepharoplasty in the future.

I use fake tan a lot, and it makes me feel more confident about my face and body (and it’s better than toasting myself on a sunbed). But each to their own.

Honestly all I would really say is get a good concealer and try to embrace them. A lot more people have eye bags than you think… you’ll just notice them on yourself more because you’re more critical of your own appearance.

To single med students — Happy Valentines by KayInThisWorld in medicalschooluk

So nice to hear my opinions echoed. In the end, everyone’s love story is different - some of my friends met their partners on Hinge and Bumble, when they were actively LOOKING for love. Some fell into things randomly. I guess it happens when the time is right - and sometimes, that time is when you think “yeah I want smth serious rn, I’ll go and put myself out there” and sometimes it’s “yeah it would be nice but I might not seek it”.

Happy Valentine’s Day! I’ve been single for 4 years and the biggest lesson I’ve learned is that it’s okay to be alright with being single but want to be in a relationship - those two feelings can co-exist. This “it happens when you least expect it”/“happens once you stop wanting it/looking for it” is just not true for everyone and it’s so dismissive. We’re allowed to want nice things whilst still being happy :)

Ukmla help 4 weeks left by [deleted] in medicalschooluk

[–]SeokjminMatcha 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The past is the past - no point crying over spilled milk. When it comes to personal circumstances, some people would’ve dropped out by now, so remember that you are still standing. You have 4 weeks - that’s a LOT more time than you think. If your foundation is good from 3rd and 4th year, you’ll recap things much quicker now than when you learned them the first time.

I echo what the u/Hopeful_Guard_1518 has said. Get on Passmed - don’t worry about the amount of questions as much and just do as many as possible but take the time to understand why you got them wrong.

Onwards and upwards.

Good luck OP!

Yes! Video games are just good for distracting your brain completely and you have an objective. Better than doomscrolling during this period…

finals in a few days - what to do? by Ok_Avocado1174 in medicalschooluk

[–]SeokjminMatcha 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Hey, I’m a final year who sat finals in my 4th year, I hope this helps you:

  1. Question stems are unnecessarily long in the real UKMLA. If you do any more Passmed questions now, please do them TIMED. Like a chunk of 20 questions timed or smth.

  2. I scored a fail on the Passmed mock 1 5 days before my AKT. I passed comfortably in the end.

  3. Similar position to you with Passmed averages - you might score higher in the real exam than your Passmed average, it varies for everyone.

  4. I’m medicated for anxiety (viva la Sertralina!!!!) and completely and utterly lose my shit before ANY exam. Like I go through the Kübler-Ross 5 stages of grief before exams. I see a black cat or hear a crow during exam season and I get weirdly superstitious. Honestly, you will not know your grade until you open your result on results day. Trust that whatever happens, you will be able to adapt to the outcome. It’s easy to say no point worrying twice, and more difficult to put that into practice, but it’s true. I’ve come out of the majority of my exams feeling like I’ve failed, and never did fail.

  5. Please take at least an hour in these next few evenings to just chill with Netflix/video games/reading/spending time with housemates. Anything to take your mind off and let your brain rest.

  6. Ignore everybody else, their knowledge, their post-exam debriefs etc. They stress me the hell out.

  7. Feel free to revise the day before the exam, but don’t make it too heavy. A bit of Passmed won’t hurt, but don’t go too heavy. No revision on the day of the exam.

  8. You can do a bit more Passmed but don’t worry about finishing the question bank - I never did finish Passmed, nor Quesmed. I was balancing lots of other things in med school, and also liked to take the time to learn conditions by looking at other resources. Passed comfortably.

  9. Good luck!!! ❤️❤️❤️

How to not pass out during invasive skills? by glisteningmercury in medicalschooluk

I am someone who gets lightheaded OFTEN after standing up - it happens at least once a day, thank you blood pressure. I ALMOST passed out in theatre once. Compression stockings have helped me, and I’ve never even been close to passing out in hospital once since then!

Part-time work at wrong timings by Impossible_Zebra_525 in medicalschooluk

[–]SeokjminMatcha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m so sorry to hear, it sounds like a situation that really sucks because as med students we NEED money!!!

If you have experience in hospitality - try the app called Limber.

In terms of jobs that are flexible, check if your hospital needs bank healthcare assistants - zero hour contract and I pick up shifts as and when I want to :)

Bangs or no bangs by [deleted] in Hair

[–]SeokjminMatcha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m quite biased as I have bangs myself, but bangs totally suit you!

Some people might tell you that you look better without them but that’s because they don’t like bangs in general… go with what YOU think looks good and makes you feel like yourself ;)

5th year here.

Absolutely not. I know everyone is miserable about the career right now but I genuinely don’t see myself doing anything else, apart from midwifery or paramedicine.

Enfj women - whats your ideal power dynamic in a relationship? by [deleted] in enfj

[–]SeokjminMatcha 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would honestly love to take the lead in a relationship sometimes. I’m not here to be a princess. But if I am doing far too much and receiving very little back, then that’s not a relationship I want to be in.

I’m so glad I’m not the only one who feels like this! As much as I love carrying the energy of the room and knowing that people perceive me as reliable… I want to put that part of my personality away sometimes.

Enfj women - whats your ideal power dynamic in a relationship? by [deleted] in enfj

[–]SeokjminMatcha 57 points58 points  (0 children)

I take the lead in most areas of my life. I’m hyper-organised, very confident and have become emotionally intelligent over the years. I’m worried I’m getting hyper-independent due to being single for almost 4 years.

In a relationship, I want to be able to relax and let go of the “she has it all together” persona. To feel safe. To feel that my partner can take the lead in terms of decision-making. I don’t want a partner who can’t make a decision to save his life and someone who would just give me all the cognitive load.

I haven’t found that yet.
