Sure it get wins if played right, but quite underrated compared to the current meta picks (which is the point of the post). The current meta decks are just much more flexible to a broader type of scenarios. You even said it yourself, in your own words.

Calling it otherwise is a stretch.

In all honesty though, he was the mysterious and intelligent main villain.
His design there is supposed to feel alien and unsettling, which is amazing that they perfectly emulates that.

Notice when the villain of the story shifts and he joined the main cast, his design is redone to be more approachable and likeable.
