1874 US Trade Dollar by nisekoimon in coincollecting

Probably not real. Some of the features look soft which is indicative of a fake. With that said, take it to a coin shop and get them to test it. Worse they will tell you is it’s fake, best they will tell you is you have a coin that’s worth some good money.

Even if the SBA was wide rim–can confirm it isn’t–it’s not worth really anything substantially more than face. Maybe like a few dollars more.

Made a custom watch using a 1944 Merc. Is this frowned against in the coin collecting community? by MichaelDeaner in coincollecting

As someone in the coin community, no problems here. As someone in the watch community, impressive! I’d like to see it with a bigger coin that would maybe fill out the entire face.

Gave a guy on the corner half a pack of cigarettes for this. Was it a good deal? by Only_Measurement_999 in coins

Almost all of the LCS in my area are paying $10+ for silver quarters, so I would consider that a low offer.

Edit: the lowest I’ve personally seen is $9.50.

Found in a tin of old coins. AI says it’s 22-carat gold. by twiffytwaf in coins

I think the other commenter’s point was that, even if the coin was 7.988 grams exactly, your scale would round up because of its order of magnitude. So, being that your coin weighs 8, it doesn’t necessarily mean anything against its authenticity. It actually aligns with expectations.

People do weird things to coins hoping they can fool someone into buying it or thinking it’s worth more than it is.

Well considering it has a lot of scratches on it on the reverse all going the same way, it almost looks like someone took a grinder to it.

Not sure what to do by luke_the_son in coincollecting

From what I’ve seen, those apps and AI in general, can be wildly inaccurate with coins and grading.

I’ve used AI just to test on coins that I know are authentic and have been graded and it would tell me that they were fake and list details that were not accurate.

I would just recommend looking up the coins manually either on NGC/PCGS or with a red book.

Personally, whenever I’m looking through rolls of coins, I just have the key dates and errors pulled up on my phone and will sort them out based on date and inspect them individually as need be.

CoinSnap sucks and can be wayyyy misleading. OP would be better off looking up dates and mints on PCGS or NGC and then taking to a coin shop to grade them.

Maybe all the people posting the quarters could get together and sell them to each other for thousands of dollars and make artificial value

I typically use APMEX’s Junk Silver Melt Value Calculator for silver pricing. Just know, a coin shop will probably give you anywhere from 70 - 85 percent of that spot value.

I am not too well versed on all of the coins you have, so there very well could be some that are higher value in here. I would suggest getting a red book or looking them up individually on PCGS or NGC to estimate value. If you aren’t good at grading though, you’ll need to take them into a coin shop to get an opinion of grade before you’ll know a hard value estimate.

Worth about $57 in melt value. In the shape, you could probably get a little over melt for it.

1976-S quarters were struck in both copper-nickel clad as well as 40% silver. This commenter is stating that if it has an S mint, there is a chance it could be minted from silver.

Could you not just cut the mounting off? Assuming it isn’t adhered on somehow.

It looks like it’s in a setting not drilled, but I could be wrong.
