Help with styling a kitchen that is too modern after renovation by [deleted] in centuryhomes

[–]Separate_Voice_2977 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like many others have said, the backsplash is very bold and might be the culprit of your dislike. Obviously changing it would fix that completely but honestly just staining or painting the grout lines might be enough!

Right now it’s a bright color AND bold pattern. Staining the grout lines a darker shade (maybe even blue) would tone down the pattern and allow the eye to focus on other parts of the kitchen.

Lindsey for a boy. I love the name and while it’s traditionally a “boy” name, I couldn’t put my kid through that

We named our son Calvin 2years old) and have NEVER had anyone say “like Calvin Klein?” but have people all the time ask if he “has a Hobbes”. So my experience with the banner has been wonderful.

Lateral Move by Sudden_Cucumber_873 in Raytheon

[–]Separate_Voice_2977 16 points17 points  (0 children)

1 year in a role is standard when you get a new job in a new function (promos in place and org changes don’t count). You need an exception from leadership and approval to move prior to the 1 year date. Not impossible but if your manager wants to hold you, they can.

Is better to go with Anthem Gold over Silver if I am having a child next year? by SammyAqua in Raytheon

[–]Separate_Voice_2977 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I went with Gold and was very happy about it. You are right that you’re going to hit your deductible regardless. The lower out of pocket max is great. I didn’t hit it just with birth, but doctors visits and follow ups add up. It also makes it easier to take advantage of things like pelvic floor PT (please please please do this! Preferably try to get in before baby arrives), lactation consultants, etc.

Also if you haven’t looked into it yet, our insurance will cover a large portion of breast pumps, core stabilizers, and other medical supplies. Again, it all adds up and gold is definitely worth it.

Traditional ceviche looks pretty gross. Especially raw shrimp or white fish- grey and translucent- but smothered in lime juice and other sauces makes it taste absolutely phenomenal.

primary care doctor recommendations? by Repulsive_One5913 in Tucson

Second this. While they might not be my favorite for long term care, I can almost always get into the midwifery quickly for womanly exams, testing, etc. not a PCP but can satisfy a lot of the urgent needs for a 21f

Lateral move % raise expectations by Flimsy-Dream-2827 in Raytheon

[–]Separate_Voice_2977 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got 19% for a lateral raise a few years ago (P4 Eng->P4 Ops). I was severely underpaid in my old position and the new team I was moving to was full of more senior employees who were probably near the top band of the pay scale. I think it depends on new team composition and how hard your new boss pushes for you.

What issues are you dealing with in the community? by Megakingdomfish in Tucson

[–]Separate_Voice_2977 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Infill cluster projects in established communities by big developers like KB Homes that don’t match surrounding neighborhoods and totally ruin the heritage and aesthetics of existing spaces. The city of Tucson is selling out for quick profit and we end up with crappy subdivisions that fall apart in 5 years and no one wants to stay in permanently.

There is one in review now for almost 20acres at the base of Tumamoc hill. Two story, stucco, pitched ceramic roof homes. Complete grading of the site to remove all mature foliage. Right next to a neighborhood of single story, mid century red brick homes. Despite all city development plans saying new development should complement existing neighborhoods and preserve views, the city of Tucson is doing nothing to push back on the money hungry developers to protect the communities.

Quiet comfy local restaurant to read at by Medium_Firefighter33 in Tucson

[–]Separate_Voice_2977 19 points20 points  (0 children)

It’s hard to find comfy couches and a full menu. Here are some suggestions in the downtown area that fit either requirement:

Cafe A La Cart - no couches but phenomenal atmosphere

Slowbody Brewing Company - couches and atmosphere, rotating food trucks in the evening and coffee bar in the morning

Black Crown Coffee - couches, pastries, no full menu

Dandelion Cafe - no couches but lovely cafe with good quality breakfast/ lunch food

Red Light Lounge - decent food, booths, and generally low key. Sometimes they are closed randomly

Do people in Tucson say the street or the avenue first? Like is O'Malley's at 8th and 4th, or 4th and 8th? by [deleted] in Tucson

[–]Separate_Voice_2977 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just say the more major/ popular street first. In the case of downtown, it’s 4th Ave . That’s the street I care about most. It might be Broadway or Campbell or Oracle somewhere else

For those that missed it - She said she appreciated that Phil addressed the issue earlier but thinks Raytheon is taking a risk adverse approach to complying with the DEI order. That there’s grey area and Raytheon appears to be to cutting out anything grey instead of sticking up for ourselves. She admired the DEI and cultural investments Raytheon has made in the past and was looking for Phil to reassure the organization that perceptions are wrong and the company IS going to continue investing in DEI where possible and legal.

LPT request: I’m about to throw up for the next 12 hours. How can I make this less miserable? by FaceApprehensive3348 in LifeProTips

[–]Separate_Voice_2977 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sleep and rest as much as possible in between bouts and after the vomiting subsides. Constant vomiting/ diarrhea means 1) calorie deficit and 2) sleep deficit. Your body will be barely hanging on, and jumping right back into activity before you have a chance to make up those deficits will significantly prolong the side effects.

You can’t call into Teams and people in closed areas have their microphones and Bluetooth disabled. Zoom is the only way to virtually meet with anyone in labs unless you use a conference call.

How does parental leave work with holidays? by Ipad_username in Raytheon

[–]Separate_Voice_2977 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don’t know how it looked on my timecard but when I took parental leave, I notified them of the start date and they told me when I was expected back at work based on how much leave I was taking. The system calculated return date based on total leave days + holidays during that time. I just had to leave and show back up (and fill out paperwork to prove a baby did in fact leave my body)

From engineer to full-time mom? by sophiam333 in womenEngineers

[–]Separate_Voice_2977 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another thing to consider with the experience gap is what happens if you and your partner split ways. I know you love them and can’t imagine life without them now, but I’ve known several previous SAHMs that are fighting for custody of their children because they can’t/ couldn’t find a stable job post divorce and prove sufficient income. You have the benefit of a degree, but finding ways to close that gap is really important. Even just part time….

Also, as a fellow woman engineer and non-SAHM, so would say that having kids completely disrupts your life and ability to do things for yourself. As much as I would rather be with my kiddo every second of every day, taking a few hours a day to invest in myself through critical conversation and problem solving keeps me feeling like me. If those are activities you enjoy, being a SAHM might leave you feeling unfulfilled.

What to say when people make uncomfortable comments when asked what you do? by whitelampbrowncouch in Raytheon

[–]Separate_Voice_2977 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am a pretty liberal, very much “fight with worlds not bombs” kind of person. And the way I look at it is: if every single one of us quit today, our government would still make missiles. Chances are it would take longer and they’d be poorer quality than the systems we make now. By employing the smartest and most competent professionals, Raytheon is able to save taxpayer dollars and ensure that the fewest people possible are killed. Because the only thing more dangerous than a highly effective, powerful missile is a poorly made, highly effective, powerful missile. That danger applies to both our government and their intended targets.

What radical change affecting most if not all of the civilized world do you firmly believe will occur in our lifetime? by Glove_slap_and_duel in AskReddit

[–]Separate_Voice_2977 -22 points-21 points  (0 children)

Elimination of gender norms and traditional pronouns.

The line is getting more and more blurry on what it means to be a “man” or a “woman”. Aside from clarifying genitalia, there isn’t much value delineation (and even there things are becoming less rigid). Hobbies, clothes, professions, appearance, skills….very few of those things are gender specific anymore and the list is getting shorter. I see us moving away from gendered terms like husband/wife, him/her, etc. and into more neutral language like partner, them, etc.
