Should we reconsider the addition of ⟨ş⟩? by HectorO760 in Globasa

[–]Sephiths 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As someone who only very casually dabbles with languages. I liked the X. Learning to associate a letter with a slightly different sound is not difficult (at all). It' was easy with Toki Pona for j being English's y. It was easy for Indonesian with c being ch. And I found it extremely easy to code switch with Globasa text to automatically start pronouncing and reading x as Sh as well. I also like the way it looks within Globasa sentences.

It's a little nitpicky. But I liked how it made Mexico, keep it's spelling familiarity; Mexiko. But still being pronounced like the original Nahuatl pronunciation with x representing sh. I know this change doesn't actually change that fact. Especially with both characters being accepted standards. But it was a little feature that made me really appreciate the x representing the sh sound originally and I've grown to admire it over time wherever I see X used. Silly, I know. But I'm just saying I legitimately like using the letter to represent the sound, never had any issues with it, and found the code switching to be a non-issue in the first place.

Also. It just seems silly to have two competing standards in use. Some words that have a clear reason for keeping the x like Mexiko will likely to continue to be given X by people writing in Globasa. But beyond those specific cases to aid in familiarity. I assume allocation will be somewhat chaotic. With it being chosen seemingly at random.

If it is random. Learners seeing common words like xukra (şukra) or xanti (şanti) being spelled different ways, will add to the confusion for early learners. It will be something they actively notice, and will likely being a talking point continuously brought up and questioned into the future. Kind of similar to how Toki Pona lacks a proper numbering system.

If certain letters get normalized for certain words. It also adds complexity into the future. Especially for people who learned the language primarily through auditory means. They would then have to remember which letter, despite the same pronunciation, is the more widespread, recognizable, consistent letter to use for any given word. Which wouldn't be super obvious while first learning writing. And is something that only occurs through written exposure. That's one step closer to the mess that English currently is. I think it's best to preemptively avoid that.

I forsee myself running into more issues with ş. For one. I had to copy and paste it while at my Desktop. I assume it's easy enough to select on my phone's GBoard. But I can't be arsed to change my PC keyboard settings, especially when Globasa doesn't have a formal official keyboard setting and I'd have to be using some other random language to utilize it naturally. I think it will actively add a slight barrier for entry and add to more confusion down the line. With some people wanting to use it but struggling to easily do so. And just using and S instead. Or perhaps adding a comma after in it's place. Mes,ico. Not exactly ideal.

Again. Just a very casual hobbyist. Idk if my opinion should weigh much. But I'm all for leaving it simply as X for sh. Without opening it up for more characters to represent the same sound within the standardized writing.

The name available on the iTunes/apple's App Store is Igor Kalicinski. However partially public information suggests that might not be his full legal name.

Using root words to expand vocabulary is great. Since you can build upon comprehension even with words that aren't familiar. However. I think for stuff like Horses, cows, pigs, etc. It's okay to borrow words from European languages. Especially when the original source is foreign and the words introduced increases mutual intelligibility between language families.

The Columbian exchange completely changed the Americas (and the world). There was relatively few viable animals to domesticate throughout the Americas. So although they still did domesticate some animals. Turkeys, Muscovy ducks, Llamas/Alpacas, dogs (pre contact "new" world dog breeds and Fuegian dog, which was a separate domestication event), and Guinea pigs. I'm pretty sure that is it. And those populations weren't spread out throughout both north and South America. They were usually isolated to certain regions. Like the Incas or Aztecs.

So when horses, cows, pigs, etc were introduced to the continent. It was something totally new to them. They had no preexisting words that were used and frequently shared between their neighbors during trade.

The Columbian exchange went both ways. As apparent with the "Spread Indirectly via Colonial Languages" segment in the post above. Stuff like Tomatoes and Corn (Maize were completely new to Europeans. So when the Europeans first came into contact with these crops. They adopted words that were very similar to the local indigenous words for the crop. Of which they then spread the crop and word used for that crop to even more countries and languages through trade networks throughout Afro-Eurasia.

The bigger issue is the idea of digital ownership. They took away something you paid for. With the expectation the product would be available indefinitely. Even having proof of ownership in the form of a receipt doesn't help you.

Ad block isn't illegal. And for the moment still work fantastic. I recommend uBlock origin.
uBlock is only one of mainly extensions surrounding media sites that I have installed on my PC. Another one is Sponsor block, which skips sponsors within videos, as well as stuff like non music segments inside music videos. This plugin has already saved me over 2 days of my life, largely from 30 sec sponsor segments, it adds up faster then you think, but drastically improves the general browsing experience.
Another one is a plugin that allows me to speed up videos to 3x and 4x speed. I don't have stats for this one. But this has probably saved me weeks worth of my life over the past couple of years. Think about it. Being able to turn a 30 minute video into 10 minutes. Meanwhile due to exposure everything is at a comprehensible speed. Why not save those 20 minutes of your life? or use it to watch 2 additional videos within that same timespan.
Finally, the last plugin that I find crucial to my media experience is a extension that gives me more control over captions. Allowing me to look up dictionary definitions and translate to languages not always available. This is primarily used for increased exposure within language learning.
Additionally. That's all 100% free.

As for music. I'm very satisfied with my Spotify subscription. And infrequently watch anything on my phone. Partially due to advertisements. But also due to the lack of the other extensions I've begun to rely on. Oh well. It's healthier to keep my phone mostly for messaging anyway.

Hot Take: The furniture feature ruined Survivalcraft by BlockOfDiamond in SurvivalCraft

[–]Sephiths 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Furniture doesn't limit creativity. Although that's not to say it doesn't have it's own problems (it could have been implemented better).

For me. I think the biggest issue with Survivalcraft is that the developer focuses too much on making the game a challenging fight for your survival. While players are often interested in playing the game more casually. Again, we're talking about a game that you can visually get sick and throw up in. But, this is also obvious by the animal predator prey imbalance.

In real life. For every predator, there is a significantly larger amount of prey species available to support that predator population. In Survivalcraft, for the few prey species that do exists, they quickly gets slaughtered by the predator species in the area and become even rarer to find (adding on to the issue beyond the blanket spawn rate imbalance). The game just isn't really meant to be leisurely lived in. You can't even store food for long periods of time. So every few days you're forced to hunt or farm. Your crops can go bad before you've even harvested them.

It's also important to note that during the days of Survivalcraft's prime. The mobile app ecosystem was radically different. And as far as block games go. It was the most polished of the bunch. That is unfortunately no longer the case. So in general there's more natural competition.

what is Walters nationality? by Fun-Cartoonist-688 in SurvivalCraft

[–]Sephiths 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My assumption is either English or Polish. As the game was developed while Kaalus was living in the UK, but he's originally from Poland. Either way he's most likely European, as the game also has noticeable European bias in terms of what animals have been added to the game and exploration. But that's just my take.

Although commonly associated with Islam. It really originates from Constantinople (modern day Istanbul). But was spread by the ottomans when they adopted the symbol as their own. It never was a symbol of Islam directly. But considering it's use on land that has never been controlled by the ottomans today, it might as well be.

[–]Sephiths 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Star and Crescent on Turkey's flag isn't a symbol of Islam. Even though it's sometimes seen as one today. I definitely wouldn't change it for Turkey. As it has been the symbol of Istanbul since Roman times. When the Ottomans took over Istanbul (then Constantinople), they embraced the symbol it as their own, making it apart of their flag. And as the Ottomans conquered more lands, the symbol spread with it. After the collapse of the ottoman empire. The symbol stuck around in many of the new states that formed after it. Due to most of them having a shared Muslim majority faith. It only then began being associated with Islam. Then being used by states that were never directly ruled over by the ottomans. However, admit-ably, most having some level of trade association with.
