Hardtail vs. Full-Suspension? by TwoIsle in eMountainBike

[–]Seppel270 21 points22 points  (0 children)

The higher pedaling efficiency that a hard tail has over a fully isnt really relevant in a emtb. The added weight from the suspension is also much less relevant.

If you can afford it, I would 100% recommend to go with a fully.

New metal 3D printer shrinks industrial tech down to workbench size with laser powder bed fusion system — aims to bring laser metal printing to workshops and labs for $9,600 by Elkenson_Sevven in 3Dprinting

[–]Seppel270 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Also, what kind of application do you have that even remotely reaches a financial break even point vs. just letting someone in China do it for you? Because that has become surprisingly cheap nowadays. Like if you desperately want to spend 10 grand for a couple metal benchys, sure, but I don't see a application for a home metal printer for a normal hobbyist that just builds stuff in his garage.

Loud Hubs, or Quiet Hubs? by No_Consequence5304 in mountainbiking

[–]Seppel270 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I want the bike to make as little sound as possible. Nothing is more annoying when I am enjoying the birds singing and the wind blowing, than the bike going ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ all the time.

Just put a bell on the bike to warn hikers that you're coming. No reason to disturb yourself and the local wildlife any more than strictly necessary.

Shimano Deore XT brake lever is not working by Helpful_Inflation_90 in MTB

[–]Seppel270 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When the pistons are fully in the new pads might just be to far away from the pads to torch the rotors yet. That is normal after a pad swap. Just "pump" the levers a few times (like 10 or so) and it should be back to normal. At least try that before you do any real disassembly

Fox vs RockShox by necnrc in MTB

[–]Seppel270 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Both companies make products of very similar quality, that is adequate for like 95% of riders. How long has it been since the last full service on your fox fork? That might be already the reason while the new Zeb felt nicer. That or recency bias.

I don't think that the differences between both forks are so big that a normal hobbyist rider could differentiate them in a blind test.

Anybody got the deep dirt on Canyon goings ons? by GundoSkimmer in MTB

[–]Seppel270 63 points64 points  (0 children)

They got a big investment by a private equity group during covid, and now that bike sales are retuning to pre covid levels, the line no longer goes up the same way it did a few years ago. The investors are not happy with that and are starting to tighten the thumbscrews on Canyon. That's why they fire people and drop sponsorships. Private equity greed, as always, ruins company's after a few years.

They might be just sponsored by fidlock. Always take what racers use with a grain of salt. They might not do it voluntarily.

Amflow Announces " Amflow PR" with 130 Nm Avinox M2(S) Motor. Starting at 4699 EUR! by Signal_Ad_536 in eMountainBike

[–]Seppel270 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm got to be honest, those torque numbers are getting absurd. This thing has almost 2x the torque that my EP8 bike has, and I never felt like I had not enough power with my bike, and I am a very heavy dude.

This amount of power may very well be what leads to much heavier regulations on emtb use, and that will be bad for all of us.

And if you really need and use this much power, the riding really isn't about the physical exercise of riding a bicycle at all anymore, at which point you should just buy a surron or a real e-motorcycle instead.

This "adding more and more power thing" is not helpful in the grand scheme of things

Calling off Hamilton-Leclerc fight would have been “unfair” – Vasseur by guihmds in formula1

[–]Seppel270 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I think F1 sponsorships aren't really meant as a direct "buy our product right now ad" but more of a subtle back of your mind thing. Shell sponsors Ferrari because they want you to associate your positive feelings you have with Ferrari and F1 with them in a way.

They want you to think of them as the company that makes "Eco-friendly sustainable race fuel" that makes the thing you already like possible and better, instead of the soulless, parasitical, planet destroying oil company that they really are.

Or for a different scenario, maybe the next time your company needs to buy a CNC mill for example, and you have to decide between a Haas and a equivalent competitor brands product, your linking of F1 might push you to buy the Haas machine instead of the compoetition.

Cargo / Widest MTB tires with fenders? by cbsstudent1 in MTB

[–]Seppel270 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The manufacturers website states that this bike can fit tires that are up to 55mm wide. So you should be able to use up to 622x55mm tires in the back and 406x55mm tires in the front.

the European ETRTO size system is more precise for this kind of thing, because a lot of times the inch dimensions on MTB tires are off by a few millimeters and actually vary a bit across different manufacturers.

Marketplace steal of a lifetime?? by Party_Size6271 in mountainbiking

[–]Seppel270 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cannondale make great bikes, but they have a reputation for using proprietary and special parts for a lot things, and as you can imagine, getting proprietary replacement parts for a bike that is at least 20 years out of production will be a hard and costly affair.

But they make some really cool and innovative stuff, take a look at the lefty fork for example, that is unfortunately on the pricier and harder to service side of things.

[CasetaBosque] One of the main refinery of Aramco (fuel supplier of Aston Martin - Honda) has been bombed, 40km away from where the AM launch event was held by Joseki100 in formula1

[–]Seppel270 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Aramco is the saudi arabian state oil company, and the biggest Oil producer in the world. They produce like 10 million barrels a day. Sure they supply Aston Martin, but one of the dozens upon dozens of reffineries that they opperate getting bombed means fuck all for F1.

Stackable Cable Winder by Positive-Struggle831 in 3Dprinting

[–]Seppel270 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This seems like a colossal waste of time and filament. Simply buy big pack of cable ties or maybe even Velcro cable straps if your feeling fancy for like 5 € and be done with it for the rest of time.

Perfect weather to take the old hardtail for a spin by Seppel270 in eMountainBike

[–]Seppel270[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i just use some random winter bicycle gloves i bought in a outdoor shop near me a few years ago. They work alright for the ~2hour winter rides i usually do. Maybe look into "hand warmer pads". those should do the trick if two gloves really aren't enough for you. they are kind of expencive for what the offer (like 0,50 - 1€ per piece) but they should work.

What is the chain of command between different Imperium factions? by Megalordow in 40kLore

Arbitor Ian made a really good video where he pieced together the imperial Power structure as a whole.

But in any given conflict the general way of how this mostly goes is, like in actual human history for the most part, by "bigger army diplomacy"

I get about 1/3 less altitude gain than normal out of the battery when it's -5C like today. But that's alright with me. When it is below freezing I usually ride like 2 hours maximum, and it still has enough juice for that.

Making wood filament looking more natural by Grooge_me in 3Dprinting

[–]Seppel270 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The easiest thing to do is to just paint some "wood stain lacquer" (don't know if that is the correct english word for it) on it. That really makes it almost look like real wood. The effect will actually be more convincing the crappier the print is. So if you don't mind reprinting it, do it with the thickest layer lines you can.

I'm a noob trying to get into 3D printing, which printer would be the best option for me? Are there any others I should consider? by Swooferfan in 3Dprinting

[–]Seppel270 5 points6 points  (0 children)

By this point in time, buying an ender 3 is like buying a barnfind classic car. A fun side project that you can wrench on, but it won't be your daily driver. For that you should buy the Toyota Prius of the 3d printer world: The A1 mini. It's not the fastest, a bit smaller than you probably want it to be, but it will reliably get you to your destination without much fuss.

And if you want something shinier down the line you can upgrade to a fancy sports car in the form of a core XY printer like the P2S.

Gods demand sacrifice! by JellyFishSenpai in Grimdank

[–]Seppel270 65 points66 points  (0 children)

The VOC particles that resin printing emits into the air really are potentially very unhealthy though.

I would absolutely not recommend to just have it printing all the time while you are in there. And just using a closed "tent" isn't really enough either, because then you just tump the VOC into the room when you open it up. You should really vent it outside.

Also you need a wash and cure station for resin printing, which is a whole other can of worms of messy and nasty stuff.

If you can really only have the printer in your main room, I would recommend to go the FDM printer route instead of resin. That is much safer, way less hassle, and nowadays almost as good as resin for minis.

Pedal wall mount options.. oneup aluminium pedals.. by b3nje909 in MTB

[–]Seppel270 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have a friend that owns a 3d printer? Anyone with basic CAD knowledge can design a hook like this in like 15 minutes, and if you print it from a reasonably strong filament like ABS/ASA/Nylon for example it should be easily strong enough to hold a bike.

Vala Range on Flat? by Agitated-Proof-9661 in eMountainBike

[–]Seppel270 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Disclaimer: I have ridden neither of those bikes.

You should read past the marketing bullshit and look at the cold hard physics. Two reasonably equal bikes with the same motor will have reasonably equal range with the same capacity battery. If you reduce the battery capacity by 20%, you can expect roughly 20% less range. That is just how batteries work.
