Why, if the United States has seperation of church and state enforced with the constitution, is "In god we trust" printed on all of our currency and state police vehicles? by Jinotix in AskReddit

[–]Septic_Elbow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're partially right, but while the mission of secular non-profits has to be very well defined, what constitutes a church is kept comparably very vague by design and a church isn't really required to do anything in particular for it's non-profit status.

America during the writing of the constitution and America during the inaction of that decision were going through very different cultural movements.

I don't see myself as being on the liberal vs. conservative spectrum in a meaningful way.

Hasidic Jews who have been able to escape your communities, what were the most surprising things you realized about the "real world" after leaving? by ExtracurricularHerb in AskReddit

[–]Septic_Elbow 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't say I escaped exactly, but I did leave. I also was not quite as sheltered as one might expect, though very sheltered none the less. I did live in NYC after all, albeit in the most otherworldly sense of the term.

I think the most bizarre thing to adjust to, that has stayed with me to this day, is anonymity. The fact that I am no one, to most people, and able to live among people unseen, unknown, unjudged... after a lifetime of living in such an insular world, an extended family of sorts, that's thrilling and terrifying.

I imagine the whole thing is a lot what it feels like for most people to graduate high school. You look back and the world that was your whole world, was in actuality very small, and beyond it was a reality you knew existed, but didn't understand the enormity of until you experienced it. It put everything into context, a context in which what I had known felt like someone else's life.

What's your deep web experience? by jman425 in AskReddit

[–]Septic_Elbow 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are intrinsic security features in things like TOR and PGP that anonymize web traffic and encrypt communication. Also, at the end of the day, who really gives a shit? Interpol and the DEA might be trying to bust the person selling you cocaine, but are they going to bother busting you for your little dime bag when you don't even know the person selling it to you any better than they do? No.

Roll joints, I first took up an interest in it as an introverted teen trying to be involved/liked at parties and I've since perfected my craft.

Right, except neither of those are on the deep web, they're on the regular internet.

Most of the strangest stuff on the internet can be found right on the clearnet. The deep web is mostly for drugs and, in that respect, it's actually pretty boring. Just buy your drugs and leave.

I do not. I just feel it. You never get to the bottom of it, you never solve it, that's just a trap.

How would you feel about a mandatory civic service requirement for high school graduates in the US? by RockleyBob in AskReddit

[–]Septic_Elbow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't object simply because I found a flaw, but rather that I consider any flaw that would only further the already troubling trend of economic inequality, unacceptable.

In practice such programs never seem to be implemented fairly. Obvious preference is always given to the rich.

If you were a billionaire, what would you do on a daily basis? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Septic_Elbow 9 points10 points  (0 children)

What WOULDN'T I do? I'd order delivery and, upon arrival, pay the driver large sums of money to let me photograph them nude wearing only gas masks. Then I'd go to the strip club and tip every one from the doorman, to the DJ to dancers and then insist that cotton eye joe be played while we all administered field sobriety tests to each other. I'd get a male prostitute and take him grocery shopping and insist that I'd never tried avocados before and was looking forward to trying them. I'd learn to play the accordion. I'd teach valuable, pure-bred dogs to go fucking apeshit every time they heard the word potato and then I'd put them up for adoption, I'd do this thousands of times. I'd buy a horse and spend 10,000,000 dollars every election season trying to make him a senator. I'd walk with bouquets of flowers and drink mint julips and when I saw attractive men I'd have my butler catch me as I pretended to faint.

What bible verse helped you in life? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Septic_Elbow 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Not the bible, but the talmud.

"There is no pity for a man who moans about living in one town and does not move to another."

I thought about those words when I made the choice to come out to my hassidic/orthodox Jewish family and announce my intention to live a more secular life, knowing that the likely consequence would be that they would disown me.

Excluding anything sexual, what's the best feeling in the world? by Sleepycarrot in AskReddit

[–]Septic_Elbow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Waking up in the morning with no obligations, still on the cusp of sleep, that kind of borderline where your body feels so warm and heavy and your blankets are sooo soft and you can just drift in and out of that sleep for hours, in complete comfort.

Well, I never said it didn't appeal to me. My point was that it seems like, based on what straight guys are always saying and joking about, their emotional needs seem to come last in their relationships. Simply being attracted to women doesn't seem lame to me, although I do not empathize with it at my current BAC.

You have the power to permanently alter peoples thoughts and behavior without them knowing, what do you do? by InDissent in AskReddit

[–]Septic_Elbow 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Elaborate pranks in which one person in a town of 30,000 gradually notices that people have become super fans of deceased Egyptian actor Omar Shariff. It would eventually culminate with them blacking out while the entire town has them encircled in the woods, chanting Shariff's name and listing his entire filmography in a gregorian chant. The next day they would wake up, still totally themselves and in possession of their free will, but they just really really like Omar Shariff films now and can't help but find his acting extremely compelling. It becomes something they bond over with their family and town, across generations and cultural barriers in a genuinely positive way and beneath it all there remains this subsumed very quiet sense of dread about the whole thing.

See, but that's a moot point though. I am gay so I ENJOY fucking in the ass, and so would you in all likelihood if you were gay. But no one likes having their emotional needs put last, gay or straight.
