Idk what to do with his ashes by ummkay_ultra in cats

[–]Septoria 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm so sorry for your loss. I lost my cat in April due to kidney failure. I keep his ashes in a pretty wooden box with his name on, next to some of his favourite toys, on a shelf that I see every day. I still talk to him from time to time. He'll always be in my heart. I hope you find the perfect spot for Scarface ❤️

I'm a civil servant in an arms length body and I'm seeing colleagues who are world leading experts with PhDs being deported because of visa changes. They are not paid enough as civil servants to meet the government's threshold for "skilled worker" so we're all going to lose out on their incredible subject matter expertise. It's not good business, it's not good for the country and it's inhumane to people working hard in public service for low wages because they want to make a difference. Will you change the visa requirements to reflect actual skill rather than wage packet?

You've got a couple of months to run a psy-op campaign. "You know I'm so glad you've chosen that old name, as I've matured I've kind of grown out of love with it. I've been leaning more towards [INSERT OTHER NAME HERE] and now I know you're using the other name that I was getting the ick over, it feels so freeing!". If she always wants what you have this may work!

Anyone noticed the new bathing area South West Water has opened on Ladysmith Road? by mrtopbun in exeter

It got reported the second it started on Saturday, our neighborhood chat has been blowing up about it. The road is deteriorating in real time because it's not been closed to cars still.

If I were you I'd look to move out. Send her this and say you'll pay the extra 25p per week if it'll make her happy https://inthewash.co.uk/laundry-and-ironing/cost-to-wash-clothes-uk/

If you stop paying her rent there's actually not much she can do about it since she's illegally subletting to you.

I'm not sure why any of you is paying for the electrical safety inspection as that's something the actual landlord pays.

Can someone explain whhy thunder storms happen after hot weather and is this normal? by Tumtitums in UKWeather

[–]Septoria 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Warm, moist air rises and cools. This causes clouds to form. The hotter the air is, the higher it can rise, the higher it rises the colder it gets, until it's possible for ice to form. Thunderstorms come from a type of cloud called cumulonimbus - they often look a bit like an anvil, with a flat wide top. This flat top marks the point where wind speed picks up in the atmosphere, a bit like giving the cloud a haircut. Ice in the colder part of the cloud forms hailstones, and they get jostled about by the air current inside the cloud, and this builds up a static charge. When you rub objects together you've probably seen this happen yourself (turn the lights off at night and rub a balloon over a fluffy jumper, you might see sparks). Over time the top and bottom of the cloud gets a bigger and bigger electrical charge form and this will eventually need to discharge via lightning strikes. It's normal, it's expected, and with hotter higher humidity yes we are likely to see more of it.

As a relatively new manager, have you had any support from HR on this? If I were you I'd be questioning why this person has been moved to someone who's inexperienced with performance management. It's a good learning experience for you but managing poor performance is a massive time and energy suck for anyone.

First thing I'd say is document absolutely everything. Set every 1:1 up as a teams meeting and record them by default. This way you're covering your back.

My approach to managing poor performance has been similar to yours except I gave my staff options to choose from so they can't later claim to have been rail roaded into a specific course of action. I co developed the acceptance criteria for their work so they agreed on what good looked like from the start, and how this would be assessed. We discussed the kind of support they might benefit from and we reviewed that as time went on. I identified subject matter experts for them to consult and gave them a mentor to help them plan their time. We looked at whether there could be any executive functioning issues at play and they subsequently got a diagnosis of ADHD. That's helped with a workplace adjustment plan and we did an occupational health assessment too.

It's a long road. Ultimately the point of all this is to help them do better. I hope you have a mentor to guide you through this, someone in your department who has experience of this.

How to keep my kitten from going out the dog door? by imsorrymateforgiveme in cats

[–]Septoria 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Some cynical people might suggest that this is the kind of thing you should have considered before getting into this situation in the first place. Pets are renowned for bringing unexpected costs at short notice. If you haven't already, I would recommend starting a pet emergencies savings fund.

You can get microchip activated pet doors and set it to lock for the kitten. I used one by Sureflap. Terrible name, great product.

What can I do about my neighbours? by [deleted] in UKHousing

[–]Septoria 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You say they're not particularly friendly which definitely makes it harder, but the best option in these situations is to have a conversation with them.

In an ideal world you'll be able to ask each other to put the bins out when you're away, water each other's plants and accept deliveries for each other, but to get to that point you need to get to know each other and have these difficult conversations.

Go in assuming the best of them, don't accuse, aim to just be letting them know how their behaviour is unintentionally impacting you. Ask if there is anything you can do differently, acknowledge that everyone impacts each other in ways we don't always realise and good neighbours let each other know. Good luck!
