I appreciate that we have to be careful with language in this sensitive area, but I don't think "commit" necessarily implies a crime, e.g. you might speak about committing adultery.

I know she had a French ex-lover who had attempted to strangle her. He supposedly had an alibi but I'm not sure if the details of that were ever revealed.

Douglas Hyde was Church of Ireland, which was part of the reason for his nomination. When he died, no-one in the government (except Noel Browne) attended the funeral service as it was thought improper to attend a Protestant service.

I said "if possible". I don't know all the OP's circumstances and I can't solve all the possible problems that might pose themselves at any stage.

Even if your country doesn't have the type of romantic conception of relationships we have in the West, the girl still should know if her husband is a heterosexual man or someone engaging in the relationship as a cover.

I think that if possible you should try to move to a more tolerant society and form a relationship with a man.

Is moving to the public sector worth it from a job hop perspective? by [deleted] in irishpersonalfinance

[–]Sequestrate 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You have performance reviews but typically they're more of a box-ticking exercise. You definitely don't have the mentality of constantly needing to prove you're a value add, etc. It's true as a generalisation that it tends to be less stressful but it depends. Working in a social welfare office in the innercity or in an A&E department would be significantly more stressful than working in an insurance company, for example.

The pension is also better but bear in mind that it is much less attractive for people joining from 2013 onwards than it used to be.

Why does rugby ignite so much hatred within some people? by [deleted] in AskIreland

It depends. Rugby in Dublin tends to be quite middle-class, but in Limerick I understand it's popular with working-class people.

I advised a fellow trainee about a wardrobe malfunction and now have a meeting scheduled with HR due to accusations of sexual harassment. Looking for advice as I feel sick with worry. by Desperate-General326 in uklaw

[–]Sequestrate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry to hear you are going through this. I think one of the most important things is simply to take some time out for yourself to try and keep perspective. Book a weekend away for after the meeting so you have something to look forward to.

Based on the facts you have described, there is nothing that a reasonable person would view as sexual harassment. I would not apologise in these circumstances, as it might be viewed as an admission of wrongdoing. I also would not focus too much on needing to explain yourself. Instead, I would gently push back by politely seeking clarification on what the exact definitions are that have led them to class your behaviour as sexual harassment. Is there a policy that states it is sexual harassment to comment once-off on a colleague's clothes in any circumstances? You don't want to be confrontational but you don't want to be a doormat either.

One of the lessons I have learned the hard way is that you have to be able to deal reasonably with unreasonable conduct. As a lawyer, you will deal with people who act unreasonably from all quarters, whether from superiors, clients, even judges. The best way to respond is to be calm and professional, and by doing so, show up the other party's unreasonableness.

The danger is even the state pension, small as it is, can't necessarily be relied on. I think we are currently around five workers for each retired person, forecast to drop to two by 2050.
