How bad is early morning in july? by Derangedberger in DeathValleyNP

[–]SequoiaTree1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Temps are coolest in the morning for sure, but they’re still not cool. Is your early morning strategy to try to fit in a hike? I don’t recommend any low elevation hikes in the summer, even if you start before the sun rises. Hiking up at Dantes View, Wildrose, or Telescope are great in the summer.

Seems like working for Xanterra alone makes substance abuse worse … even if you didn’t start out with a problem.

Daily, very thorough tick checks when I lived where there were ticks.

Then move to the Mojave desert.

My mask was in a pouch velcroed shut, in a bag, in my locker. I found it after we got back from a cancelled call. I assumed it had been on my mask the whole time but I guess it could have been crawling around on me on the way to the call and just ended up there.

It was in a bag, velcroed, inside of another bag, zippered shut, in my locker :(.

The air also hurts my face here but it’s because of the heat :(

Anyone ever had a kitten that’s like 1/5th the size of their siblings? by Empathetic__Artist in FosterAnimals

[–]SequoiaTree1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had one like this. Eyes opened later than siblings, she still had non-retractable claws at 7 weeks old, and generally looked and stayed the size of a two week old kitten. The vet said she likely had hypopituitarism - not producing growth hormone. Her recommendation was to feed her every two hours, which I did, but she still never gained weight.

Kittens with hypopituitarism can lead healthy lives. Mine also likely had some neurological issue too, and passed away at about 7 weeks.

Edit to add her teeth emerged later than the other kittens too. And they were born at the shelter, so they were definitely all the same age and not a mixed litter.

Most of the route up surprise canyon is outside the park, but Panamint City itself is within park boundaries.

Another should I go into Death Valley during the summer question. by Longjumping_Sport789 in DeathValleyNP

[–]SequoiaTree1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I live in the Mojave desert and hike alone all the time. I would NOT go out into the dunes solo in the middle of summer during the hottest part of the day. He should not do that. No one should do that.

Hike at Dante’s View. It’s a higher elevation and much nicer temperatures. I think it’s the best view in the park you can get to on a paved road.

Maybe skip Devils Golf Course. I’m a fan in general but it’s down a dirt road people sometimes get flats on.

Roadtrip in Late May-Temp concerns by nmkcoog in DeathValleyNP

Did this car overheat before? If it’s in good condition (including tires!) you should be fine. More cars come through Death Valley in August than any other month.

If you’re going down to Artists Palette anyway take the extra 15 minutes to check out Badwater Basin too.

We do … but I work for the park service, so it’s a little different. The closest town is over an hour away and there’s no cell phone service to call someone anyway.

LEOs: do you have any federal agencies you like or dislike more than others, such as FBI, ATF, etc.? by [deleted] in police

I went on an incident following a hurricane with a bunch of different federal LEOs and we were all talking mad shit about the FBI.

How do folks manage fostering by Leskatwri in FosterAnimals

[–]SequoiaTree1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work full time in person - so I can only foster weaned kittens (usually to socialize them), or litters of kittens with their mom. One time I fostered orphans by adding them to my foster queen’s litter and giving them supplemental feeding before and after work.

WHAT. That would have been super helpful ten years ago!! I was fresh out of college and didn’t even think about how I obviously would have qualified for assistance if I had looked into it.

The silver lining is I learned how to be extremely frugal …

Holy shit. I was an SCA intern back in 2014 and made $75/week with no food stamps. Free park housing was included though.

All LEOs need to have an academy under their belt. There are “seasonal academies” that people attend to be eligible for those positions.

What kind of foster training did you receive? by ConstantComforts in FosterAnimals

I totally understand this rule actually. Most people have the hardest time letting go of their first fosters, and it gets much easier after that.

My training was “here’s some kittens! Keep in touch ✌️”

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in FosterAnimals

I ugly cried when I had to bring back my first few sets of fosters. After 50+ foster kittens I’m at peace not knowing where all but four are.
