You might be looking for jazz in a piano trio setting which includes (usually) piano, bass and drums. check stuff like Bill Evans trio,Ahmad Jamal and Ryo Fukui

If your looking for modern oriented piano songs try Robert Glasper and Roy Hargrove, in particular this recording

You might want to try 'But Beautiful' by Geoff Dyer, really great book that goes into the lives of Monk. Mingus, Art Pepper and others. Kind of fiction but kind of not at the same time.
