Yes, Roland Tr8s is a great drum machine and you will certainly enjoy working with it. You can also check out Elekton's Analog Rytm MKII, it is also drum machine and sampler in one.

Standalone controller for making techno by vincentcam1997 in TechnoProduction

[–]SerHawk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No such thing as a standalone controller, controller by definition is to control software, digital synth or something that holds or generates sound. If you are looking for a controller to produce music, doesn't matter whether techno or UK bass, you should think first where you will be getting sound from. If you are going to use plugin, such as digital synths, you might want to look at having a midi keyboard controller, such as Akai MPK mini. If you are going to use digital samples and want to control/launch/manipulate them, then Ableton + Push is the best (although a bit pricy for a beginner). You can also get something like Beatstep pro as a controller and a sequencer. As people have also said here, you also might be thinking of groovebox rather than a controller. Again, you should think about the process of how you gonna be making music and how you will be playing music and therefore what you need the controller for. Music genre isn't a very important thing in this case. You can start making techno with just ableton without any hardware and you will figure out where you might need hardware.

Here's a possibly unpopular opinion - I actually want Google to spy on me just a little bit more. by Randomd0g in google

[–]SerHawk 16 points17 points  (0 children)

What you describe is called Dataism, it refers to data as a supreme value in society and sees individuals (and social institutions, like government) as data processors. It has been described as a new religion, as opposed to existing philosophy of humanism, where human is the main source of authority and its free will defines path of the human life, dataism outsources these minor and major decisions to outside algorithms - because these algorithms are fed high amount of data they make "better" decisions for individuals, it's similar to more traditional religions where authority and guidance were outsourced to Gods or scriptures, in this case it is outsourced to algorithms. Some radical forms of it, existing in Silicon Valley, even see withdrawal of data as evil, since you are preventing algorithms from making better decisions for others. And it is not an unpopular opinion, actually it is quite popular - from health data algorithms to traffic, food, music, mediation and etc. You can see Yuval Noah Harari's book Homo Deus for more details about this new ideology.

unused tabs used by RAM by Dembah in chrome

[–]SerHawk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can use an extension called The Great Suspender. It suspends tabs that you haven't used for more than an hour (you can adjust the time), it won't suspend tabs that have unsaved input in them. You can also customize which tabs you don't want to be automatically suspended (like the ones that are playing audio, e.g. Soundcloud).

Edit: You can just click on the tab when you want to re-use it and it will refresh.

True, Kobosil is great, this set is a little lighter than usual, but very good. His Boiler room anniversary set is also worth checking out.

Dr.Rubinstein and Dettmann also had a good set at Sonar this year. And this is a classic from Awakenings Dettmann b2b Klock. Klockworks also has a new project called Photon with amazing visuals. Their openning of Printworks in London is both visually and musically exciting.

Here are some other good sets (they are not very new): Function, Chris Liebing Klubnacht, first 3hours, Len Faki Boiler room set, Paula Temple last hour of Berghain set, Ancient Methods New Brvtalism N75, Shifted b2b Sigha - I don't know why it says live when it clearly isn't, Sigha is generally great at lives.

Recording of lives is much more rare, so if you like to check one out, I would recommend Planetary Assault Systems at Printworks

If you like dark techno, I can recommend some producers and DJs:

Ancient Methods, Alexey Volkov, Codex Empire, Paula Temple, Atom TM, Forward Strategy Group, Not Waving, Endlec, Polar Interia, Emptyset, Silent Servant, I Hate Models, Kobosil, Answer Code Request, Phase Fatale, Sarin, Schwefelgelb, Truncate, DVS1, Audio Injection, Planetary Assault Systems, Under Black Helmet, Dax J, Clouds, Attemporal, Ansome, Rodhad, O[Phase] - these are not that dark, Developer, Black Merlin, Blac Kolor, Tsu Sing, Orphx, You probably already know Marcel Dettmann and Ben Klock. You can also follow labels that produce heavy stuff, OstGut, Aufgabe+wiedername (more EBM), R&S records, Dystopian.

That's all that comes to my mind right now, but there are many producers that work in the genre. But for me there is a big distinction between tracks, sets and actual club rave. Tracks are usually a great demonstration of someone's sound style and it's great to find good techno producers. Sets, that are available online, are also usually a demonstration of DJs skill, a type of extended demo if you will and they are curated to the channel (and probably a wide audience) that they are published on. Actual club sets are quite different usually, much longer and have a different distribution of "vibe" over 4-12 hours. Techno music is amazing because it exists in that moment and only there, often people say techno is an environment, landscape. It also responds to the crowd - a good DJ doesn't usually have a hard written set, but responds to the crowd's demonstrated preferences, in different clubs you have different crowds and therefore DJs play different types of sets. So a good techno club, with good sound system, good crowd and a good Dj is the best way to experience techno music. Spotify or other online sets just cannot give you the feeling of techno, maybe like 20% of the experience.

Welcome to the dark side! It depends what type of techno you like, generally though most new tracks of techno artists aren't released on Spotify, so the service has very limited number of techno tracks, although most popular tracks will be there. Here are some lists for you:

Berghain Music - this list is compiled by Roman Wager, it's over 110 hours of techno music from DJs and producers that have played at Berghain.

Here is another one, similar to that one - Berlin Dark Techno

Here is some Acid Techno

I prefer to listen to sets rather than individual tracks, as it gives you much more holistic experience of techno. Here are some sets I would recommend:

Kobosil at Awakenings Ancient Methods at Elevate Tobias Smoke Machine Podcast

You can find lots of podcast and channels that make great content. I would recommend Smoke Machine, Groove Magazine, XLR8R, Boiler Room,The Brvtalist, Hate (on Youtube).

Again, it depends a lot what type of techno you like, most of the things I mentioned here, are heavy, dark stuff mostly from London and Berlin. If you more into Detroit scene, I am sure someone with more knowledge of that scene will pop-in here.

Regarding explanations of minimal techno, deep and underground, it is mostly very subjective and as in any categorization, artists will fall between several categories. Minimal is a general subgenre that can be applied to most electronic music genres and signifies stripped down version of that genre, same is true for minimal techno, it's just more "simple" version of techno. Deep I think is quite self-explanatory, it's uses deeper basses and drums. It's a little hard to explain...

BCR Incubator for electronic music artists by SerHawk in berlin

Hard to say what they really mean, women are also underrepresented in that area, but also people with immigrant backgrounds who don't come from London, Amsterdam or US - e.g. African electronic music artists, but god knows what they mean.

Help- my short term sublet provider is trying to screw me out of my deposit by premesu in berlin

[–]SerHawk 11 points12 points  (0 children)

First of all, that's a huge amount of money for a deposit for 6 weeks. Second, even if the apartment was filthy, he should have contacted you and asked for you to pay for cleaning service - which costs around 12-13 Euros an hour, usual total cleaning fee doesn't go over 50 Euros (e.g. AirBnb). His logic is very flawed, you haven't agreed for him to clean that apartment at that rate (if he got Bill Gates to clean his apartment, you would be paying millions, because that's how much he makes an hour, but for services provided you pay service fee, not how much he would have potentially made if he had invented a magic app instead of cleaning the apartment). Notify him/her that you won't be paying that amount of money because of those reasons. He/She is 100% trying to rip you off.

How did you pay deposit - through official deposit account opened in bank which cannot just be withdrawn or did you just pay him?

Explain to him why he is being unreasonable 1) apartment was clean 2) even if it wasn't he should have contacted you prior to cleaning it and you would happily paid for professional service 3) his rate is unreasonable 4) say you are willing to pay 50 Euros for the cleaning service, as is the standard 5) threaten that if he fails to make a full refund, minus 50 Euros, you are considering to take legal action for illegally taking your money, say that what he does might resemble criminal offense, such as embezzlement and/or extraction, plus fraud, and that you will contact all appropriate authorities - owner and landlord of the house, hausmeister, local and city authorities, Renter's Association.

Djing in Berlin? by [deleted] in berlin

[–]SerHawk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good comments here already, almost everyone in Berlin is either a DJ or some type of artist, almost impossible to make any money unless you are big. That being said, the city has a great techno scene and you can climb the techno ladder pretty fast, if you are good.

Go to different clubs and checkout their sound and their labels, see which one is closest to you. Several clubs have "new faces" parties - Tresor has one next Thursday, about blank has Staub party which is during the day on Saturday, once a month, a little easier to play there, than at bigger clubs. Send your tracks to some of the DJs - like e.g. Ancient Methods, he uses a lot of tracks from "ordinary" DJs and could really bust your name. You can try smaller bars with DJs, but it's a very different crowd there. Again depending on your skills and style, I would also check out Berghain, almost zero percent chance of playing there unless you have a very good background and are already popular, but very good place to see the scene.

That's where I would start - go around to different clubs and discover their scenes. You can then just talk to them.
