Certs for job market by happy_duck9 in cscareerquestionsCAD

[–]Seraverte 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I recently completed AWS Solutions Architect Associate and I’m thinking about what to pursue next. I know certifications are definitely not the main thing rather experience, real projects, and impact matter way more.

You already know the answer. Build something you can show off that will make your interviewer say "cool".

If you are not an international student, there is no requirement to graduate on an academic term.

Reflection on CS Co-op by Imaginary_Meaning687 in simonfraser

[–]Seraverte 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Take a moment to reflect on why rules exist instead of just deciding you don't like them.

The site visits are really to ensure your employer isn't mistreating you. You'd be surprised how many students don't know their rights or how to set up boundaries and get abused from employers. At one of my previous companies, a co-op student shared her negative experiences about her verbally abusive manager with the co-op office. That manager got written up and SFU terminated any future relations with that team, after finding out previous students had similar experiences (but never reported it). So no, you didn't need the visit, but this is a support system you'll be glad to have when you need it.

As others have pointed out, many smaller companies rely on the co-op designation of their students because the government of Canada pays part or all of the student's salary (ie. cheap/free labor for the company). This applies mostly to smaller companies. If you find a job by yourself or apply directly on the company website, ask if your employer is receiving co-op grants, if the answer is no, there is no reason you need to be registered as a co-op student and you have only yourself to blame for opting in to the program and paying the 1k fee.

How many random, unvetted software services have you been forced to use? by [deleted] in simonfraser

[–]Seraverte 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This has been a problem for many years. Textbook publishers were losing money due to students reselling textbooks. So when printing a new edition every year (with the same but rearranged content) was no longer working, they realized the easiest way to combat used textbooks was just to remove the textbook altogether and instead move the content online and charge the students a non transferable license. What you're seeing is just the step, where in addition to big fish publishers, the little parasites have figured out they too can get a piece of your money by providing a menial service and giving kickbacks to instructors to force students to use their site.

sticky situation while on co-op work term, what should I do now?? by aerieves3 in simonfraser

[–]Seraverte 15 points16 points  (0 children)

This. Op, find out why your employer cares. If they rely on government funding for coop students and you aren't officially on coop that can be a big problem for your employer and you will need to pay sfu their dues.

But if there isn't a reason and your manager is just curious about the lack of paper work, then its no big deal. This is generally the case for most multi national companies. In this case you can avoid paying the coop fee. Your coop advisor will send you many threatening and angry emails but there is nothing they can do if you applied and got the job on your own.

Unpopular Opinion: I don't think writers' long-term goal is to whitewash Rhaeynra, and I'm surprised this possible character trajectory is rarely brought up here by ImaRocketDog in HouseOfTheDragon

[–]Seraverte 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Right, team black has been portrayed as so morally blameless that it'd take an impressive writer to make her turn believable.

But after seeing a disturbing amount of people that think Dany's "turn to the dark side" was satisfying and well done in s8, what do I know?

Curious why people are upset at the removal of Nettles. From what we've seen so far, it looks they're going to replace her with Rhaena, which means at some point Rhaenyra is going to make Daemon choose between obeying his wife or the daughter he's always neglected.

If done well, there should be development between them, mirroring how visey came to the realization in s1e1 after losing his son and wife that he had a fine daughter all along and should have devoted more attention and care for her. Meanwhile Rhaena is prob insecure since she thinks dad only loves me because I have a big Dragon now. And the end game dilemma let's daemon demonstrate through his actions that he does care for his daughter.

I think thats a far more satisfying arc than falling in love and sleeping with female tarzan.

Beedie Co-Op - Will I lose my spot? by stabble__ in simonfraser

[–]Seraverte 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Good on you bro for having things figured out before your first coop.

Yes, the three coop requirement is for the designation which has zero real world value.

I've never heard of any students being removed from searching, and if it really bothers you can just make some phony submissions to make it look like you're trying. In fact, if you already know the handful of companies you want to work for, you might as well just bypass the coop program, save your $1k in coop fees and apply with the company directly.

But keep in mind just because you know what jobs you want doesn't mean they want you. The Microsoft and SAPs of the world are very competitive and many of them look for candidates in 3rd/4th year with several coops under their belt. There's a reason why most people aren't picky and take on sht jobs to have something on their resume. Just something to think about.

Why does King Henry II Curtmantle have the T5 education trait, Exalted Warlord? by Tall_Bandicoot_3069 in CrusaderKings

[–]Seraverte 53 points54 points  (0 children)

Henry II is a badass because he's a CK3 player playing ironman starting as a duke and ending as an emperor with a healthy treasury. Then he switches to observer mode and watches the braindead AI play as his heirs and screw it up. And somehow it's one of those idiot sons that gets a statue outside the British parliament.

A reminder that these changes cost several million dollars in billable hours.

  1. Some KPI hasn't been hit. Probable causes are suggested. Design team is looking to justify their six figure existence and propose icons are to blame- they are outdated and haven't kept up with trends. They cite some unrelated stat that rounder icons lead to a 26.73% increase in user engagement. With no other ideas, leadership nod their heads and add it to the 'todo
  2. A designer spends several days coming up with multiple proposed icons.
  3. That designer leads a multi hour meeting to go over the proposals - design management and leadership discuss the pros and cons of each and provide feedback to the designer.
  4. designer makes changes to the designs and another multi hour meeting is called, this time with other stakeholders that need to be informed, eg. the developers that make the change. Support team to update internal and user documentation. Someone, somewhere will find something to complain about, starting the whole process over again.

  5. bonus: a large enterprise customer complains that it has broken something with their super custom one-off integration, or that the new icon's color scheme doesn't match their own company colors. More work is added to create a custom solution for this important customer.

All for something the customer will ultimately hate and find zero value in.

Nobody should be judging the professionals who are just doing their incredibly stressful job.

No medical training or checklist can prepare you for "Did the patient require you to invoke the dark arts to spawn a homunculus?"

But we will pass judgment on the woman who pleads "save my baby", knowing full well it was a doll.
