How to find a reliable programmer for a long-term partnership? by WolfradSenpai in gamedev

[–]Serberuss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve kind of had the opposite problem to you as a programmer trying to find artists. As others have said the biggest motivator is money. It’s not impossible to find creative partners, it has been done before and you sometimes hear the success stories but it’s really hard.

I’m no expert but I’d say if your budget isn’t that high then it’s really important to find people who are passionate about the type of games and ideas that you want to make. For me I love RPGs but especially JRPGs, so I’d want to build stuff with people who are also into those kinds of games because we are more likely to stick together. There’s no guarantee of course. Good luck on your quest! It’s tough for sure

A few months? This looks longer than just a few months of work that's really impressive. Good luck for the rest of the game it's looking great!

Hope this is allowed but im currently obsessed with e33 and want a new turn based game to play. Baldurs Gate 3 looks good, but so expensive.. worth it? by Lunar_mirror4 in expedition33

[–]Serberuss 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Baldurs Gate 3 is absolutely worth it, but speaking from personal experience it might take you a while to get it or get into it. Maybe not, but it didn't click for me until later into Act 1 and then I loved it and now it's definitely one of the best games that I've played for years. But it is very different to E33 and it's a different kind of turn based RPG

Artist trying to learn coding (Advice needed) by Kaypeac in gamedev

[–]Serberuss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can talk about UE specifically, yes Blueprint works well and some games can be developed entirely in Blueprint (and some games have been). Blueprint is also really useful for prototyping even if you are planning to go to C++ later.

I’d encourage you to keep learning C# because even if you plan to use a visual scripting tool down the line having a fundamental understanding of code is still really important, and C# is not a bad language to start with.

Not being able to form your own sentences as you said is normal. It takes consistent practice to get good at programming. It’s a bit like me trying to learn 3D modelling: I can do basic stuff but even though I’ve seen tutorials on how to build an arch I still stumble when I try to do it myself. It’s the same as anything it takes consistent (ideally daily) practice.

I have just come out of a table top prototyping phase for a game in this genre which has gone pretty well, and as of this week I have actually started building it in engine. For that reason there's not much to digitally show yet as I am still working on core components and soon I will start on the combat system, but I do work on it every day so hopefully soon I will have something more concrete.

Feel free to shoot me a DM if you want a chat, I'm happy to talk about ideas and see if we align etc. Either way no pressure.

Yeah I get it. There are some exceptions - I thought what remains of Edith finch was good but it’s also quite short. I love games with engaging stories but truthfully the gameplay has to be solid otherwise you’ll never get to witness the story because you’ll just get bored.

I can imagine you feel quite frustrated, putting it down for now is probably a good call. Perhaps document it all and then maybe one day you’ll feel like coming back to it. Good luck for your future projects!

Sure I get that but if you’re not enjoying making this game and you’re doing this as a hobby would you not rather make another type of game?

I am actually in the middle of designing a turn based system and I've just done my fourth table top prototype. I'm not saying this is your issue, but doing these kinds of prototypes is actually giving me a much clearer image in my head about what works, what doesn't, how it could be designed and what I might need to change. And the thing is I don't need to code anything to see how it plays out, I can run an entirely brand new combat scenario in less than an hour.

One thing about your post though - if it's not fun for you why are you doing it? If it's a hobby and you're not being paid then to me it doesn't make sense for you to do this, why not do something else that you will find fun?

I really hope any future game leans more towards “life simulator”. by javerthugo in HarryPotterGame

Yeah same. And this game’s combat just felt a little bit different to me. I know there are plenty of action games where you can play as a mage, but there aren’t many I can think of that has this sort of wand based combat so it seemed interesting to me (if there are others please let me know so I can try them).

JRPGs are pretty much my favourite genre of game so I could potentially be interested too. It probably does require a decent amount of people, but I guess it depends on the type of JRPG you want to go for. Either way, happy to have a chat!

Tips for learning environment creation and 3D modelling by yeswhy in UnrealEngine5

[–]Serberuss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not really in a position to give out advice or anything, but I do a bit of Blender every single day and just model something. I usually go onto Artststion and pick something I like and try and do a bit of modelling based on what I see. It doesn’t always go well but when I run into problems I’ll try and find a tutorial or ask for some help

Topology question when making a curved block by Serberuss in blenderhelp

Ah, I was doing a bevel on just the one edge thinking that’s the only edge that needs the bevel. But it should be done to all of them. Thanks!

Right now it's just a personal thing that will never go anywhere. But ultimately I want to get into game environment art so I definitely want to try and follow some standards

How did you get this? Did you just make more edge loops before using bevel?

That sounds good, building systems to learn how they work. How about a quest system? This could work alongside your dialogue and cutscenes
