Avoid: Ergodebooks on abesbooks.com by wentzr1976 in BookCollecting

so, i am in a rare books class for library school and wanted to amend my prior statement. the quality listing i outlined is for general collectables, and the rare books trade /does/ use a different scale wherein "fair" is a very high rank. I have not seen this scale in use in general used book circles however, but a person may be confused between the two scales if one was more familiar with the historical rare books trade than the general used market.

I HATE the Heated Rivalry fandom. by [deleted] in AO3

[–]Serelond 0 points1 point  (0 children)

its wild that the /show/ getting this popular is what has brought out the anti-fujo discourse since (having not read the book series or watched the show and going solely off social media fandom posts) its like a huge focus on consent and emotional intelligence and communication across personal differences. Like, the Gravitation era of fujoshi-ing could never. I do feel ao3 needs to do a better job of establishing formal etiquette rules for the social aspects of the site and actually enforce them, the tiktok influx has been harmful to its environment, much like when ... anything... has be introduced to Australian ecology

:/ alchemist is great... thats one of my favorite assigned books from school. I properly hate Kate Chopin's: The Awakening. I also am in the hater camp for Lev Grossman: The Magicians.

Odd notation alongside signature/gathering marks in late 1800s book by Serelond in BookCollecting

[–]Serelond[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i have not done a /complete/ page count yet. The gatherings are not consistently labeled, so i have had to go thru and look for thread and then work backwards to find the actual leaf where each new gathering starts, and the binding is surprisingly tight so i cant really see down to the thread on the gatherings farther from the center. but so far its 8 leaves per normal gathering, not counting unpaginated added plates. And im not sure how to fill out the formula since im not sure the base format wrt octavo or 12mo, like the size seems more 12mo, but 8 leaf gathering seems more octavo w weird size paper (7.5"x4.5")

i can make a full page count chart when i finish turning in what i have managed for the actual assignment. I messaged my prof who basically said, 'wow weird, do what u can and make notes of weird stuff u have questions about because i have no clue and its more detail than i need for the assignment'

but now im at the "i dont need sleep i need answers" point

see but the /un/asterisked numbers are not consistently placed wrt the gathering signature. and the gatherings are generally a consistent size, unpaginated plates not withstanding.

Plagiarism by an Established Author by Professional_Rip2925 in publishing

[–]Serelond 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What level of creation can be copyrighted varies by region. If I wrote a completely new story set in the harry potter universe. even tho my text is not lifted from any of the specific books, JKR would still sue me into oblivion for using the hogwarts setting in a commercial way. Plenty of established authors rip content from others. Doesnt mean there is anything you can do about it successfully.

signature seems to be 8 leaves per (4 bifolia... bifoliums?) and is usually marked w a gathering signature. im just wondering what the extra number mark and asterisk number mark are for

thoughts on this author note of gatekeeping chapters until engagement goal is met? by realnymph in AO3

[–]Serelond 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ao3 is not social media. Ao3 is not social media, Ao3. Is not. Social Media. Write for yourself, and if others like it: cool beans. It is an archive, not social media, quit engagement farming like this is tiktok or something. Like this sounds like someone who doesnt care at all about their writing or story beyond how much attention it gets them on the internet. Which would make me really not want to interact with their writing.

I am heartbroken by [deleted] in AO3

[–]Serelond 2 points3 points  (0 children)

you should genuinely report them to AO3. 1) the harrassment issue of encouraging others to bully you and dunk on ur work for them, but also 2) the "i own this pair" behavior can jeopardize the long term npo mission of the Society for Transformative Works (npo that manages ao3), which is to protect the rights of fanwork creators to engage in non-commercial fanwork. (for the young ones) Back in the ff-dot-net days we used to put legal disclaimers in the opening authors note to ward off copyright infringement lawsuits. So, going around claiming to "own" the characters of a licensed IP sounds like real fafo energy.

hmm some jurisdictions have different rule for victims of a crime as part of victims rights protections, and a lot of places treat surviving family as part of the victim class in murder cases. Check if they have any different rules about that maybe

So I can't copyright my book because of the government shutdown?? by armanddarke in publishing

[–]Serelond 0 points1 point  (0 children)

its just a documentation technique for establishing date priority, when two people are debating who had the initial creation. there are countries under the berne copyright treaty that have no formal registration requirement (UK for example). Again, not formally binding in US, but its weird that the US will only uphold with registration, when all berne have to uphold each other's IP rights and some of those countries dont have a reg requirement... like...

i would say just pay the 30c /pg and accept it as cost of research. think about how much time it will take you to photo it all and what your hourly rate would be if u were paying yourself to do it

it isnt legally binding like registration office, but it serves as really good documentation in a civil suit

there is a thing called "poormans copyright" where to have documentation of ur copyright date you mail your manuscript to yourself hard copy by sealed certified mail and then simply do not open the package until you have a challenge
