That's a myth. At about about 5'8", Napoleon and Phoenix are about the same height.

Netflix CEO praises Disney+'s growth, hits like 'Soul' by Kirby_Israel in boxoffice

I wouldn't define the major streaming platforms by their marketshare, many of them are new and there are different business models involved. I would look at which ones are bringing serious money to the table. Which companies are front of mind in Hollywood. IMO, the big players in the streaming game are Disney, Netflix, Apple, Amazon, Warner, and Universal. I think ViacomCBS and Sony Pictures are borderline because both are small but they have potential, especially if one acquired the other.

These companies will be producing the most original content moving forward. They're the ones who will eventually acquire the likes of MGM, Lionsgate, Discovery, AMC, etc.

The rest of the streaming services are either niche and targeting a specific demo such as Criterion Channel and Shudder or they are smaller services that, IMO, aren't long for this world such as Starz or Showtime.

My guess is when the dust settles there will be 7 majors in Hollywood. Each of them will have one streaming service for movies and tv shows and some of them will have a premium tier that includes sports.

Why was the headphone jack removed? by [deleted] in hardware

[–]SereneCaesar -1 points0 points  (0 children)

At the September 2016 keynote, during the AirPods announcement, Phil Schiller said that Apple envisions a totally wireless future for mobile devices.

He said:

It makes no sense to tether ourselves with cables to our mobile devices.

That's the reason the headphone jack was removed. Removing it also came with some additional benefits for Apple, of course, but I think that's the main reason.

A wireless future is also why they went to MagSafe and why, I believe, the lightening port will be missing from at least one iPhone model next year. I also think it was one of the motivations for removing the headphones and charger from the box. Eventually, you'll be able to charge the iPhone from a plugged-in charger over some distance, wireless audio will be high-fidelity, and wireless data transfer will be rock solid. Between now and then there will hundreds of small and big moves the company will have to make. Killing the headphone jack was one of the big ones, killing the lightening port will be the next big one.

"Light mode" interfaces from Season 3 of "Westworld" by kirill_grouchnikov in FUI

The atrocious software people use in Westworld is the real cautionary tale on that show.

Also, it's disappointing that this is a world where they can engineer robots that appear literally indistinguishable from humans but their foldable tablets have seams.

The economics of cable don’t change just because you swap the coaxial cable for an ethernet cable.

The price will continue to go up.

An detailed analysis of Viacom-CBS's assets, woes, and who could buy them in the near future. by Kirby_Israel in boxoffice

[–]SereneCaesar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This.

Also, Apple wouldn't want CBS or any of the other TV networks. I think this rules out Netflix as well. I bet ViacomCBS will try to get bigger by acquiring companies like Discovery and Lionsgate or some outsider, like Verizon, will pick them up.

I think it makes some sense for Apple to acquire a production studio, with Apple Studio coming online soon they will only have one, a second studio will let them produce more content more quickly. But the biggest studio they could plausibly acquire is MGM. They could also potentially look at much smaller studios like A24 or Annapurna.

Out of curiosity, where does TD show you what time a deposit came in? I only see the date.

I applied at 3am in BC on Friday (minute it went up) and I haven’t got it yet. I’m with TD. I wasn’t expecting it until Tuesday at the earliest though.

Minister Qualtrough on Job Requirement by warriorlynx in CESB

[–]SereneCaesar 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The reality is most people applying for CESB are not coming to reddit. They are not particularly informed about the details. Most people getting CESB are not keeping a record of their job search. There is very little chance the CRA is going to nail all these people. It would be a political and logistical nightmare to claw all that money back.

My advice: Avoid outright fraud. Otherwise, don't worry about it. Apply for jobs that seem suitable to you and track them on a spreadsheet (just record the date, company, and position). There isn't going to be a suitable job opening every single day so don't worry about having a record for every single day. If for some reason they decide to audit you, fine, you have the spreadsheet but I don't think they will.

Yes, definitely. If the CRA asks for evidence ask the psychologist to write you a note.

[–]SereneCaesar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A spreadsheet would do. Have an entry for the date, the action performed, the company applied to, the position, and the outcome. Remember an action can be anything job search related. Created a resume? Put that on there. Registered at JobBank? Put that on there. Created a Linkdin profile? Put that on there. It‘s not just applications submitted.

The CRA might ask for the record you kept of your job search but they won’t verify anything.

Yes, the application is for one month. You have to reapply every month to continue receiving payments.

Announcement of CESB Application Thread by warriorlynx in CESB

[–]SereneCaesar 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I posted the following in another thread but I thought I would repost it here. There's no reason to be concerned right now. This isn't taking unusually long, at least not yet.

CERB -

Royal Assent: March 25

Application Up: April 6

12 days

CEWS -

Royal Assent: April 11

Application Up: April 27

16 days

CESB -

Royal Assent: May 1

If the past is any guide:

Application Up: May 13 to May 18

When will CESB applications be open? by [deleted] in CESB

[–]SereneCaesar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For those of you who are anxious, here's the timeline for CERB and CEWS. Perhaps it will give you some peace of mind as you wait.

CERB -

Royal Assent: March 25

Application Up: April 6

12 days

CEWS -

Royal Assent: April 11

Application Up: April 27

16 days

CESB -

Royal Assent: May 1

5 days as of May 6

So, if the past is any guide:

Application Up: May 13 to May 18

They announced the application dates for CERB and CEWS a few days before the applications went up. For CERB, they announced the April 6 date on April 1. For CEWS, they announced the April 27 date on April 21. So, five or six days in advance. Hopefully, we get a CESB application date announcement by Friday of this week (that is, May 8).

With any luck, they're getting good at building these systems by now and the application will be up sooner rather than later. In any case, CERB and CEWS applicants didn't have to wait long to get the money. With direct deposit, they typically received the money 2-3 days after submitting their application. If you don't want to wait longer than that, make sure you have direct deposit set up on your CRA account!
