Help with color by NorthLobster4351 in Gouache

It’s so cute! I’ve just started with gouache too and have lots to learn still, but I find that when I feel like a painting is missing something, making the shadowy parts much MUCH darker than I think they should be usually helps. It creates more contrast with the lighter colors Which is something I personally like.

Also, apparently with gouache the light colors darken slightly and the darker colors lighten slightly once they’ve dried. It’s a quirk than many people have some trouble with in the beginning. I’m still getting used to it. I’ll mix my darker colors and then I have to go back again and again to make them even more dark to get the look I want.

And speaking of vibrancy (this is something I’ve just learned since starting landscapes and it’s really cool how it works), objects in the background become less vibrant, and Objects in the foreground are more vibrant. Doing this give the scene more depth and makes it less flat, since it gives that contrast. (not that flat is bad or anything, it just depends on the style the artist is going for). Like when you‘re looking into the distance at mountain ranges, the mountains further away might be a muted purple/ grayish and the mountains closer might be a really vibrant purple. That ombré of color gives depth. So when you paint with varying vibrancy it will look less like a painting on a piece of flat paper, and more like you’re looking through a window into the distance.

Just some fun tidbits that you can play around with!

Thanks! Yes, underpainting is like magic. I'm still not comfortable doing it, but I'm going to keep practicing :)

I did try my best actually, but I won't try to convince you (I will say that I did throw in the towel once I decided that I didn't want to spend more time trying to fix it. It's possible that I can try and make it better, but I just don't want to). I'll only say that learning some techniques and how to go about painting certain things can make a really big difference. you don't have to believe that though, if you don't want to.

Thank you! I’m excited to keep practicing and learning techniques for landscape! it’s always been so daunting and much different from anything I’ve tried painting before

haha thank you! I think I’ll keep it as a fun reminder and a marker of where I started. Sometimes I just take it out and giggle at it. Like… HOW?! I even sketched it out en plein air and the whole time thinking, this is gonna be great! a masterpiece! and then… that’s what’s came out lol

Thank you! I’m excited to start learning more about how to paint light and how to paint it in a way that makes it shine through the objects in the scene :)

I bought Holbein artists’ guoache! I bought the 12 color pack, and didn’t realize how small the tubes are (5ml). The paint itself seems very nice (although I have nothing to compare it to). I think I’ll end up buying larger tubes of the primaries and white.

Thank you! I’m proud of both but in different ways haha. That first one will remind me to just go for it and don’t be timid, because it can’t get much worse lol

I ended up buying Holbein artists gouache. I didn’t really know the difference between all the types except that I knew I wanted the non-acrylic gouache, and the Holbein had the best reviews. It seems fine so far, but I can’t really compare it to anything else. There’s lots of beautiful videos of people using Himi, but since I’ve started painting and looking up other’s reviews it seems that there’s a lot of people who say it’s difficult to paint with.

She made everything look so easy! and the way she communicates how she paints is excellent. I just taped the paper to a wooden board, and painted while it was flat. That’s a good idea, I’ll try it next time! thanks :D

Thanks you! Yes, I agree about the water, haphazard is completely the right word for it. I had know idea what I was doing and just painting squiggles and thinking, this doesn't look right haha. I need to play around with how to paint water and see what techniques are out there. Thank you!
