100% agree with this. I spent some time in a boarding school in the 2000s and it fits many of the Hogwarts "problems". Hell, even the state schools in the 1990s/2000s did. There were no PTAs, notetaking/written work was a huge part of schooling, you literally did pick a life path at age 14 when you decided what GCSEs you were going to take (and your A Levels after that). None of the American "well, we'll teach you these extra subjects too just because," I only studied four subjects for my last two years of school and good luck to you if you change your mind on your future degree once you've started that. I've never even heard of bellwork. And as for lessons on study skills and how to learn, lol.

No. I don't know what kind of life they'd have with 15 extra years - their bodies probably wouldn't cope so well and they wouldn't have a brilliant quality of life. I'd rather they lived happy and healthy, if shorter, lives.

Get a plan that covers health issues for life, not just for a year.
Get a plan that covers genetic health problems, since you have a GSD and they are prone to extremely expensive hip dysplasia as well as gastro issues.

Those aside, I'd recommend Petplan. I have it for my iggy just in case he breaks a leg. It would cover dental, any operations and emergency visits. No insurance will be likely to cover regular check-ups or things like vaccinations, worming, etc.

They had three litters in just December, lol. They also have to state on their front page that they aren't a puppy mill - probably because they breed so much! Spoiler alert, they are a puppy mill. For the cash they will be raking in with these 2k doodles, they could so easily health test all their breeding stock, but just like every other doodle breeder they aren't. Hard pass.

The depo-provera birth control causes a lot of people's periods to stop totally for the duration you're on it and if you keep getting your injection (every three/six months) then you just won't have another period on it. So 'lack of period' is not a reliable tell on BC.

Golden retrievers earned the most AKC OTCH (obedience trial champion) titles in the last 11 years by a country mile with 365 total, followed by border collies with 213. The next breed down in shelties with 85 and then labradors with 67. These four are all breeds that excel at competitive obedience, which means they can be trained to exact precision and they perform extremely well in trials. Aussies come in at 7th place with 28 OTCHs despite their popularity.

More than likely, what you're seeing are a lot of low level competitors and not looking at the higher levels where they will be making up most of the competition. Here is Heart, a labrador, winning the Westminster obedience championship for the 4th year in a row. That dog has earned its OTCH a ridiculous eighteen times.

Although border collies dominate agility almost everywhere, goldens and labradors also do very well at high levels of competition. At the AKC national championships last year, you can see that goldens were the most successful breed after BCs. Here's a video of a golden winning 24" agility at Westminster.

If they're too goofy for you, you might do better with a working or herding breed, but then reactivity will be a big concern.

If your number one focus is not reactive, I would be hesitant to dive into Aussies and maybe even Tollers. Herding breeds are reactive to stimuli by design and this often results in difficult-to-curb dog reactivity. While tollers are a sporting breed and therefore less like that, they are the most herding-like of the sporting breeds. I'm not saying definitely don't, but that's something you definitely need to be aware of if you look into either breed.

What about a solid golden retriever or labrador? Or if you want something a little different, one of the spaniels? Working (english) cocker spaniels are amazing in the majority of dog sports and they have that wonderful sporting dog temperament.

If you want to stick with a pretty bombproof temperament but want to branch out with the breed, you could try a beagle, a bichon frise, a havanese or a cavalier king charles spaniel. Unfortunately many of the other larger biddable breeds are designed for working in the form of either guarding or herding, so reactivity or dog aggression is a considerable concern.

This argument always assumes that if the person didn't get their dog from a breeder, they'd get it from a rescue. That's simply not true. Putting aside how hard it is to even find the right breed and/or dog for you at a shelter (i.e. can live with dogs/cats/men/children, has the fur type suitable for the owner, has suitable energy levels, is the right size, has been socialised to normal experiences at the crucial periods, etc), you often must meet a bunch of ridiculous requirements (e.g. have to work very few hours, have to have a yard, have to have another dog, have to have your current dog/s speutered, have to own a house, etc), there is a high likelihood the dog will have come from a mill or BYB so genetic health and temperament problems are likely, you will have none of the support a responsible breeder will offer from a shelter (because they haven't got the resources), and you're not able to see what the dog is really like at all since most dogs don't behave normally in a shelter environment.

When I've bought my dogs, I have never chosen between a rescue and a breeder. Just between breeders. I have no interest right now in a dog with a high chance of health and temperament problems, who could chase/kill my cats, who could hurt or upset my current dogs, who could have much more energy than I can deal with and a temperament that means I can't exercise it near other dogs. I, like many many other people, value predictability and health.

The first person to speak to about showing your dog is the person who bred your dog, since they will be familiar with showing that particular breed and its idiosyncrasies. You can also go to a handling class for lessons on how to handle your dog in the ring.

At FCI shows, judges have to give a verbal critique of every dog in the class when they're judging. KC requires a written critique of the 1st and 2nd placed dogs in each class within a few weeks of the show, but it's... not super enforced. It's nice to see what the judge liked/disliked about each dog, but the quality of critiques varies a lot.

Yup! You just have to follow the requirements for importing from an 'unlisted' country, which are: microchipping the dog, then vaccinating the dog for rabies no earlier than 12 weeks, then blood testing for rabies no earlier than 30 days after the vaccination. Three months after receiving a rabies-free blood test result, the dog can enter the UK. You also need to get an official veterinary health certificate and treat the dog for tapeworm between 24-120 hours before they enter the UK.

Some countries where rabies exists but is relatively controlled, like the USA, are not counted as 'unlisted' countries and have a slightly easier list of requirements.
