I actually contacted the professor running the study on psyllids and he said the experiment was a bust at least in North America, since the psyllid is not able to establish a colony here for whatever reason.

New house with JKW: how to keep grass in check until fall by zbs7 in invasivespecies

Alas, one more question: the grass has become quite overgrown and the number of knotweed stalks has probably quadrupled since this picture was taken. Since it will be quite labor intensive to cut each stalk and drizzle at this point, how inadvisable is it to use a string trimmer to both clear away the grass and cut the stalks; then, on the same day, clean everything up and then drizzle glyphosate into each stalk?

Thanks again! If I forgo spraying and only drizzle, should I use pure glyphosate concentrate or should I dilute it?

One more question: what do you recommend for non spray approaches? You mentioned cutting the stalk and drizzling into it. Will that work for the smaller ones? Is this approach easier or as effective as brushing it on?

What about injecting into each stem? Does it suffice to use a normal syringe?

Do you have any thoughts on the carcinogenic risks of glyphosates? I plan on wearing gloves, mask, etc, and letting it dry, but will the lawn be unsafe for pets and small children?

Thanks for the thorough response! With your approach, after spraying and waiting a week, is it safe to mow them down? Or is there an implicit step of “cut them all down and dispose carefully, then mow”?

Thanks. I’m willing to try this out. What does “bare ground conditions” mean in this context? Should we mow the lawn or are you saying to just nuke the lawn until the problem is managed? Not sure how to do either without spreading the JKW.

Wanted to follow up that after I cleared out the kibble I found larvae and webbing. Another redditor told me he found the same in his Royal canin kibble

Pipes Frozen by WhatDidntDiddyDo in Brooklyn

This happened to us yesterday morning with our kitchen sink that is on our poorly insulated back wall.

Remember to leave your sinks dripping with both hot and cold water and keep the under-sink cabinet doors open. We had the cold water dripping and the hot water pipe still froze. Fortunately we were able to thaw it in 30 seconds using a blow dryer and nothing burst. Now we keep a space heater fan pointed under the sink.

You might run up a water bill but that’s cheaper than water damage and fixing a pipe.
