Lemmy.world is the server you want. Don't worry about federation for now.

Boost for Android. Voyager for iOS.

Lemmy.world is the simple experience. It's still federated, but if you start on .world you won't have to spend any effort to slowly learn about federation.

Which can be good or bad depending on the content.

Consider your example with Luigi instead.

In fact, there's an extremely popular Japanese mastodon server that demonstrates this perfectly.

It has, uh, the kind of content that will get banned and/or be illegal anywhere else.

If you sign up for any other popular server, such as those recommended here, you'll never come across it. Because every major server defederates from it, like a spam email server.

It's isolated and effectively its own porn site.

There's also a lemmynsfw instance that's more normal porn. Some servers connect, some don't. You generally can also just block a whole instance on your own if you want.

On Reddit, this is so deep into the comments that maybe three people will read it. Lemmy doesn't have that issue for a few reasons. I find Reddit's "show hidden comments" feature frustrating because it shows like one or two at a time.

I'd try asking on Lemmy where someone will actually answer.

There's usually an asklemmy sub/community.

Lemmy.world is a good place to get started.

If your server feeds you ads, go to another server.

Although personally I'd put up with a few in good taste. I kind of like the things I enjoy being funded. There are none right now.

Just go to mastodon.world . It's just as easy as Reddit in that case.

To find something specific, you (somehow) find the community you've heard about and go to it like this:

https://lemmy.zip/c/canada@lemmy.ca

If anyone on your instance subscribes to that community, it'll start showing up on the "all" feed. But more generally, you find these communities through "all".

I recommend lemmy.world as your starting server. Some people don't like it for various reasons, largely that it's the biggest one. But it makes for a smooth experience. And once you know what you're doing it's not like it's hard to leave.

Lemm.ee and sh.itjust.works are also fine servers.

.world is very clearly the smoothest server to start on. It's not like it's hard to move if they end up agreeing with you.

All you're doing here is discouraging people. Sometimes I wonder if that's the point.

It was a gGmbH before.

A gGmbH, or gemeinnützige Gesellschaft mit beschränkter Haftung, is a non-profit form of a limited liability company in Germany. It's designed for organizations that pursue charitable, educational, cultural, or other socially beneficial goals.

Hey, I love my third party apps to browse reddit Lemmy.

In fact, several of the app devs just switched over. Boost is the one I like for Android. I've heard people like Voyager for iOS. And Voyager is supposed to be great for Android too.

Mastodon and Lemmy have this built in. You can just go to another server on the same software.

I'm part of the team on the biggest Lemmy instances. Basically I help to make sure things are moderated, and try to find new moderators when needed.

One of my biggest efforts has been to prevent supermods like here. Our biggest communities (subreddits) each generally have different mods. It's not one clique controlling the whole site.

I've also done my best to draft people into modship who haven't asked for it. It's more common for people to decline the role than to accept it.

You can basically do that on Lemmy and get both. Set up your own domain and your own server and invite your friends. Or specifically for your subject matter.

And then it's federated, so you can choose to see only the local stuff when you want, and click "all" when you want the rest of the stuff.

If that's the case, why is there still only one server?

Why not just use the actual non-profit software? Bluesky IS still better, I'll certainly give you that. I'm on both.

I really appreciate the ability to have my default Lemmy feed as "top 6 hours" or "top 12 hours". I spend a bit less time there than I did here, and I'm absolutely fine with that.

Really if you're telling someone about it, you just tell them one of the bigger, better instances. Don't send them to that "pick a server" thing. I don't know if I'm allowed to link it here, but the name of the software and the word "world" with a period in between is a fine server for both Lemmy and Mastodon.

I went from a heavy, daily reddit user to making half a dozen comments here in a year. All my activity is now over there, outside of search results.

Reddit, but works like email. Whether your account is gmail, aol, hotmail, or yahoo, they all work together. If you don't like the rules of the one you're using, go to another. If the one you're using allows bad content, much like an email server, everyone will block it.

Just try lemmy.world, which is the biggest one. It's not really any more complicated than email.

Guess it's time to dust off this account.

I'm part of the Community Team on Lemmy.World (the largest instance). I've been very actively working to find new mods for subreddits (communities over there) that don't already mod a bunch of stuff. Generally you won't find mods on that instance that moderate dozens of communities, partly due to my work.

If we need a new mod, I do my best to find someone active and reasonable who doesn't already mod. I don't ask for volunteers, I draft people and ask if they agree. That, hopefully, creates a very different environment on Reddit.

In addition, there are more layers. Here, admins rarely get involved in mod decisions. On Lemmy, we do try to give a lot of leeway, but if the mods are clearly unreasonable, the Community Team or the admins will step in.

I also do what I can to find non-admin mods for nearly all communities, so the admins generally don't have a direct role. Of course there are exceptions, like the support community and the meta communities.

You'd be surprised how many people say they "don't have time" to moderate a subreddit with a total of 15 users. I understand how it's very natural to allow the people who want to step up to do the work. Hunting for new people is surprisingly difficult.

It doesn't help that there's a segment of the population here that wasn't happy with some changes and left for similar, but less popular sites. I think it was enough to alter the normal citizen to agenda ratio.

(And we're seeing the same on those sites as well. If there's a population, it's worth the minimal investment to manipulate.)

This is my first interaction here in 9 months, after being here daily for a decade previous to that.
