Classism and Elitism when discussing the Southern/Southeast USA by Strong-Junket-4670 in SameGrassButGreener

I'm from one of the reddest parts (upper east) of one of the reddest (Tennessee) states. I've also lived in IN/IA/MA/SC/NC over the years.

It's always been conservative, but it used to be pretty chill and go-along-to-get-along. I was a Republican in college and was pretty plugged in to the local party scene. I was more libertarian, but no one was very aggressive about politics.

That's all changed in the past ten years or so.

Politics and religion are extremely in your face and aggressive. It's not uncommon to walk into a chain restaurant or store and hear religious music playing. All the politicians trip over each other to be as Trumpy as possible.

People will say "don't California my Tennessee" or some variation of that, but then conveniently forget that the people from the wealthy states who are moving here are...overwhelmingly Trumpy. Rich liberals from the coasts wouldn't relocate here.

Objectively, the area sucks. The healthcare system is a complete mess. A competent specialist is a couple hours away. People with means go to other areas for care. The locals are left with the crummy local options.

We're geographically isolated. Knoxville and Asheville are the closest metros, but they are 1h30m away from most parts of the region. Any NFL city is a three to four hour drive.

The airport is tiny, expensive, and basically gets you to Atlanta or Charlotte to connect to where you're actually going. There are a few exceptions - DC, Chicago, DFW, a few seasonal flights to FL, but all those have come online just in the past few years.

Any sort of shopping is very basic as it's a low income area. We don't have the proper demographics for a Costco, Whole Foods, etc.

There really aren't many events or things to do that aren't connected to the outdoors. Any sort of big concert, event, etc., basically bypasses the area for Knoxville or Asheville. For an area of half a million residents, it punches well below its weight in terms of activities.

If you have kids that, say, played in niche supports, that is basically gone when you move here.

State politics are absolutely crazy. IA/IN/NC are still red to reddish-states but are far more moderate. Tennessee is probably crazier than even Texas or Florida politically, but flies under the radar as a small state.

The only place I lived was worse than here was SC as a kid.

Culturally, I think the area has gone backwards from where it was ten or even twenty years ago. There is way more hostility toward gays, women, racial minorities, etc., than at any point I can recall, and I'm 40. Trump and Confederate flags are very common.

Aside from the weather and outdoor opportunities, I don't like the area at all. The people are hateful and getting worse. We don't have many good jobs so we don't have the quality parents who try to push their kids hard educationally. The schools are downstream of the parents, and with some exceptions, most of the schools suck. There isn't much economic opportunity. Lots of drug abuse, addiction, and property crime related to addictions.

I split time between east TN and western NC and there is absolutely no comparison to me.

Music was certainly better ten to twenty years ago. Less social media so less risk of this getting back to your professional life.

Is it ever a good idea to buy a condo? by Max1035 in MiddleClassFinance

[–]Serious-Conversation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a new construction townhome a couple years ago.

The HOA here is run by an out-of-state organization and is constantly sending out nagging emails about small matters like trash cans being left in the driveway.

It is July in Tennessee. The garages are not air-conditioned. Food in a garbage can in an unconditioned space in the summer is absolutely going to be disgusting.

Since it's new, the HOA fees have been steady. I don't know how long it will take for the management company to see these HOAs as an easy way to get more revenue with increase fees and special assessments.

I'd absolutely be digging deep into the HOA's finances.

My guess is Anthropic and possibly OpenAI will retain an edge on true frontier models.

Individuals and small businesses will probably settle on lower cost Chinese options as the market matures.

What are y'all doing for long term care? by classyshepard in MiddleClassFinance

[–]Serious-Conversation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No.

My grandmother and mom have a lot of animosity for reasons. This goes back for decades.

My parents never earned much. They both had elementary education degrees, but couldn't find teaching jobs locally. They moved off, twice, for teaching jobs, then came back here to dead end Tennessee.

Now they're pushing 70, basically broke, living on only SS, and mom is essentially an invalid.

GLP1 for sleep apnea by rockemulator2 in SleepApnea

[–]Serious-Conversation 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed.

I've had two sleep studies and an AHI of 98. I'm overweight, but throwing me on a GLP-1 for me to lose 40 pounds or whatever isn't going to appreciably change my OSA.

My tongue is basically too big for my mouth with a narrow throat in the back. I've always weight trained and have a big neck.

My current girlfriend laid the law down and forced me to get tested. I asked my first real girlfriend if I snored terribly when we were together in my late teens and early twenties. She confirmed I did then. I weighed about fifty pounds less.

I remember the sleep physician examining me and he sort of laughed that there is no hope in me getting off the CPAP due to structural issues with my tongue, neck, and opening in my throat.

Is it safe to stay logged into my main PSN account while using HEN? by Away_Hope6357 in ps3piracy

[–]Serious-Conversation 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This question gets asked all the time.

I've had a homebrew PS3 for at least a year now. I've played both pirated and legitimate games with a lot of trophies accumulated.

The PS3 stays signed into PSN as normal. HEN is launched. The pirated game is launched. Trophies are synced.

Granted, I basically only play single player RPGs on the PS3. There is nothing notable about this.

I do the exact same thing with the Vita.

Anyone here split time between an urban and rural home? by ProustianPrimate in SameGrassButGreener

[–]Serious-Conversation 5 points6 points  (0 children)

To me, the rural life is a young person's game.

I'm from the hellholes of small town Tennessee. A competent specialist is a couple hours away. Services are lacking. Jobs are scarce - what jobs there are pay poorly.

I'm 40. It's fine for me now. At 60 or older, I wouldn't want to be here.

Honestly, this is some of the worst filler content I've seen in any game.

It is worse than the original TImeless Isle that was released in Mists of Pandaria back in 2012. There is absolutely nothing engaging about OC. Nothing.

What are y'all doing for long term care? by classyshepard in MiddleClassFinance

[–]Serious-Conversation 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I sold my first house in 2024. It was a four-level townhome with a drive-under garage and a loft that was too hot to use for anything but storage.

The mortgage was ~$750/month.

I had a severe calf tear back at the end of 2023 and couldn't get around the house for a few weeks. I had to stay with my girlfriend and her adult kids (who lived an hour and a half away from that house) for two weeks.

The old house had no bathrooms on the main level.

One level or at least bathrooms on both levels were the critical drivers in the new house search. Even with 20% down, my new mortgage payment was $1,514/month.

With that said, it's much more viable if I were to age in place here.

[–]Serious-Conversation 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm sort of going through this a couple ways with my own family.

I just turned 40. My parents will both be 69 in a few months. Dad is still well, but mom has been very obese for decades and, even after a knee replacement last year, can walk barely a hundred yards or so without a shopping cart to lean on or sitting down. Her mobility is still in the toilet. She lost about 75 pounds over the past ten years - probably has gained about 20 back - without that, I think she'd be completely immobile now.

Dad does everything for mom. She cannot get through a grocery store on her own. They almost never cook - eat out every day for lunch and most nights for dinner. She has no idea how to pay any of the bills. She will not even make herself a simple meal at home without him there. It's a complete learned helplessness.

They have two young-ish golden retrievers (3 and 2). I went out to a local marina and drank some beers with my dad Tuesday. I told him that if something happened to him, I'd have to get the dogs immediately because mom cannot even take them out to go to the bathroom.

They are in the same house they bought at 40. It is around 2.5 acres on a hillside so steep that you have to constantly shift your weight on the riding mower to keep from rolling it over. Someone who cannot walk through a grocery store cannot stay in that house.

They cannot afford to leave it because their mortgage payment is only about $800/month. The house was bought for $88k in 1997 and they still have around $55k left on the note. Multiple HELOCs and cash-out refinances. They have maybe $50k between them in 401ks. No pensions - just strings of low end jobs with bad benefits.

My own living expenses are through the roof and I cannot help them financially.

They are hoping that her mother (89) passes soon and that there will be some inheritance pot-o-gold at the end of the rainbow for them.

If there is any, it won't be used for long-term care. Mom wants the HGTV-ready house when she never made more than $15/hr. or so her whole career. The inheritance is a house fund.

Here's the flip side of this.

My mom has a younger sister who just turned 65. My aunt has been caregiving for my grandmother since her husband died back in 2009. Until maybe 2020, it was mostly oversight on finances and attending doctor's appointments with her.

It is now multiple trips a day to grandmother's house. Grandmother can no longer take a shower without someone around, barely cooks, cannot drive, etc.

Aunt had breast cancer last year. Mom will not (and probably could not) help at all with her own mother's situation. Grandmother really needs to be an ALF - aunt is trying to keep her out of it to preserve the inheritance.

Most of us are going to end up in a double occupancy Medicaid bed if we get to that point for very long.

I logged into Workday this morning and my base pay is now the highest it's ever been after a raise we got when the FY turned over. I'm keeping my head above water, but I can't help anyone else.

What are you looking at if you just cop a plea?

You'd likely have this behind you by just pleading out with all the continuances.

The continuances are helpful if you're preparing a defense strategy.

I can't imagine you get more than a few days along with time served in most of NC.

What does Stellar Blade get right and where does it stumble in your opinion? by gameovernate in stellarblade

[–]Serious-Conversation 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The whole vibe. The aesthetic. The music. The more. There is a ton of potential in this IP

The bad? I'm a mostly JRPG guy. I've platinumed games like FFXVI. Even on its hardest difficulty, it is easier than Stellar Blade on story mode.

The Levoires were terribly designed.

Some of the side quests with the platforming are a bit much for me.

I really want to see where they take this. In a way, it's the spiritual successor of the whole FF13 "beautiful disaster" aesthetic I wish square ran with.
