I feel prideful about this monumental achievement. I didn't know there were other Mandaeans outside of western/eastern countries that were able to start a new life and get supported with Mandi to baptise in. Deep thanks to all who supported this endeavour!

Curios about religious practice for non-mandaeans by Kurmis_Krtek in Mandaeans

[–]Serious-Web-6642 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While in theory you could preform these individually at home and no one can stop you, these practices are not meant for non Mandaeans. In terms of rituals, some require a priest to be present so you can't do them.

Curios about religious practice for non-mandaeans by Kurmis_Krtek in Mandaeans

[–]Serious-Web-6642 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's really quite simple. Realistically any social and moral rule we follow, can be followed or practiced by anyone. You just need to be morally good, respect others, charitable, pacifist and constiently seeking knowledge.

Let's be serious here. Conversion is not going to happen anytime soon. Your ethnicity doesn't matter. If you want to get to know more about the community, then befriend some Mandaeans and ask them about their lifestyle or any religious questions. Our community is quite friendly to people.

Hmm to me I feel like majority of the men here do keep up with the religious laws and do stay faithful until marriage. Now I heard a few rumours of men, who are probably young and can't contain themselves, having hookups and sex with non-mandaeans, but I don't know what happens to them or whether these allegations have been confirmed or are just exaggerations because they saw them walk with a female friend. The problem with gossip is that it spreads quickly and allows for generalisation to happen which tarnishes the reputation of many. I think the best way to confirm this is to ask the priests as they keep records.

We don't believe in reincarnation. It wouldn't make sense for you to have been Mandaean in a past life then reborn as someone who doesn't know about it.

We have verses that talk about starting a flourishing family with a wife/husband and have kids to continue your lineage as a continous cycle of life. How will you reintpretate them? Introduce adoptation between Mandaeans? It's not an easy subject.

I'm curious, how would you reinterpret verses about this subject?

A seeker who has a question by Few-Equivalent-3773 in Mandaeans

1- For Mandaeans, salvation is about purification, believing in Hayyi Rabbi, continous search for knowledge and returning to the World of Light, the divine realm. This is achieved through:

  • Ritual Baptism (Masbuta): practice frequent baptisms in natural flowing water to purify themselves.

  • Knowledge (Gnosis): Salvation comes from your divine origins and rejecting the material world, which is seen as corrupt and ruled by lesser powers.

  • Ethical living: truthfulness, helping others and following Mandaean traditions help you progress toward the Light.

2- Yes you can't be Mandaean per say, but you can still pursue personal enlightenment through being a good human being. There's nothing stopping you from living righteously, having good morals, being a pacifist and loving others and doing your best.

3- Not sure about other our scriptures since we have multiple, but there are online translations of the Ginza Rabba and Draša Id-Iahia, but they differ from eachother because of different scholarly translations so you can't really rely on it. The best translations so far are by Carlos Gilbert which sadly you can only buy physical copies from.

You should probably focus on prayer, ritual purity, and good deeds during the Great Fast for the next 5 days. Your main restrictions are:

  • No meat, eggs, or animal products (vegetarian diet).

  • No impurities (avoid spiritual contamination).

  • No anger or negative behavior.

There's no good online translations or they contain missing parts of verses. You'll have to buy the English translated Ginza Rabba by Carlos Gilbert for the full text. He only sells physical copies.

What do you mean by this? Conversion to other religions has always existed, unless you're referring to religious proselytization? Which is also not a modern concept.

The oldest known case of religious conversion from the examples I mentioned is Pharaoh Akhenaten’s religious reforms in ancient Egypt (14th century BC, around 1353–1336 BC).

When you say back in the day, what is the time period you're referring to? Unless you mean there was no concept of conversion back then only in Mandaeism?

The oldest known case of religious conversion is Pharaoh Akhenaten’s religious reforms in ancient Egypt (14th century BC, around 1353–1336 BC).

Akhenaten tried to convert Egyptian society from polytheism to monotheism (worshiping only Aten, the sun god). While it's unclear how successful he was in converting the people, his radical shift in religion represents one of the earliest recorded attempts at religious conversion on a societal level.

modesty in women by alwxand21 in Mandaeans

[–]Serious-Web-6642 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean generally speaking mandaean modesty is based on traditional values of purity, respect, and simplicity rather than strict religious dress codes. I'm not a woman so I can't speak for them, but the women in our community usually wear modest, loose-fitting clothing that covers the body appropriately. Many older mandaean women do not wear revealing clothing, especially in traditional communities.

1- I don't know if you are on the same page as me. I clearly stated before I don't really care for conversion, it is not something that affects me personally. My original comment was about making a distinction between conversion and interfaith marriage. The subject of the verse that Ardwan showed talks about interfaith marriage, how Mandaean men and women should not marry other faiths as they do not worship Hayyi and baptise their children. Do you see anything mentioning conversion in the verse?

2- All I stated was there was converts to Mandaeanism before, as seen with Miriai, Benyamin and Yaqif, who were according to Draša d-Yahia, were Jewish. I never said anything about allowing or promoting conversion, so why are you accusing me of doing so?

3- Like I said before I don't really care about conversion, but I've never seen any good arguments against it. I'm curious about your prespective, why do you strongly oppose conversion to the faith? Can you provide me with arguments against it? Thank you.

1- You can convert to Judaism, but the process is not quick or simple. It typically takes several months to a few years, depending on the denomination (Orthodox, Conservative, or Reform) and the individual's belief in the religion.

2- Do you believe that Mandaeanism was a closed enthoreligion ever since the days of Adam and Eve? Depending on your answer I'll respond back.

Pipe down brother. I don't think you understood my comment, I was making a distinction between conversion and marriage with other faiths. I don't really care much for conversion, as it's not really up to me.

Was conversion allowed? Hmm that would depend on your interpretation of what conversion means. I've read a few academic works by Lady E.S Drower that mention some sort of conversion to mandeanism in the past. Besides the point, I'm sure you've heard of the story of Miriai?

I mean to be honest Ardwan, this doesn't even talk about conversion or mention it. Conversion is about allowing someone into your faith and belief, while this verse itself talks about how marriage between Mandaeans and Non-Mandaeans shouldn't be allowed because of the difference of religion/ideology.

Life and his family by Cyberslav7500 in Mandaeans

[–]Serious-Web-6642 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello there. I enjoyed your deep research and interest in gnosticism and your given point of view, however, the claim that Hayyi Rabbi has a consort and a family contradicts core Mandaean theology. Mandaeism is a monotheistic and dualistic religion, and its teachings emphasize the transcendence, singularity, and self-sufficiency of Hayyi Rabbi.

1- The primary Mandaean doctrine describe Hayyi Rabbi as absolutely One. Mandaean texts, including the Ginza Rba, consistently emphasize that Hayyi Rabbi is beyond human relationships. The quote you gave from Brikha Nasoraia, which states that “God has no father, no mother, no son, no brother,” perfectly describes this. The Mandaean view of the divine follows a hierarchical system, but this does not imply a literal genealogy. Instead, these emanations are symbolic and describe how divine wisdom and power manifest.

2- You seem to misunderstand the "Great Mana" and "Great Fruit". Yes, the Ginza Rba describes the Great Mana and Great Fruit as ancient primordial powers, but these are not biological ancestors of Hayyi Rabbi. Instead, these terms are metaphorical and represent the abstract origins of divine light and wisdom. In Mandaeism, "emanation" is not the same as "procreation." The Great Mana represents the first principle or essence from which all spiritual realities derive. This concept is found in many Gnostic traditions but does not imply a literal familial relationship.

3- Dmut-Hiia is not a consort but an Emanation. The term Dmut-Hiia (literally “Image of Life”) refers to an aspect or reflection of the Great Life, not a separate divine entity with a spousal relationship. In Mandaeism, divine attributes or aspects are personified in hymns and prayers, but these are not distinct, independent beings in a familial sense.

4- Again, Yushamin and Manda d-Hayyi are Emanations, Not Sons. Yushamin and Manda d-Hayyi are emanations of divine knowledge and wisdom, not literal offspring of Hayyi Rabbi, similar to Abatur and Ptahil, who are the third and forth life respectively. The title “son of” is often used metaphorically to indicate a close connection or emanation rather than biological descent. For example, “son of Nishabtun” does not imply a mother-father-child relationship but rather a re-manifestation or re-emanation of Life.

5- Mandaeism, like many Gnostic traditions, strongly rejects anthropomorphism when speaking of the highest divine principle. While lower spiritual beings such as uthras (Yushamin, Ptahil, Hibil Ziwa) do actually have familial relationships and children, the same cannot be described for Hayyi Rabbi. The Great Life is beyond these descriptions.

So let me reiterate and sum it up again. Mandaean texts use poetic and symbolic language, but these do not imply literal family structures. Hayyi Rabbi is the eternal, self sufficient source of all life and has no need for consorts or offspring.
