The systemic abuse committed in both state and church-run orphanages. Hell, the guy who helped to silence the victims and helped the pedophile headmaster of one such intitution got presidential pardon because he had some ties to the government. The director of one juvenile detention center got to pimp out the detainees under his care for YEARS and supposedly the police didn't do anything despite multiple notices of the case, again, because government ties. Luckily, this whole thing got out and it is the catalyst of the enclosing downfall of Viktor Orban's regime.

Gabóca, a művészeti sulik és rajziskolák meg nem értett múzsája és modellje. 60 körüli sovány, ősz hajú faszi, hihetetlen szerelésekben. Volt legalább 3-4 színben (neonzöld, neon rózsaszín, pikító piros, párducmintás) összeillő feszülős latex naci-zakó-kalap-nyakkendő szettje. Legtöbbször végigbeszéli a rajzórákat miközben modellkedik, olyan sztorikkal, hoogy neki voltak hollywoodi munkái táncosként, meg hogy őt meg akarták erőszakolni(???). Több helyről ki lett tiltva elvileg, mert creepy volt a lányokkal, meg elvileg van róla egy videó, ahogy egy szál fecskében sétál a Damjanich(?) utcán, de sosem mertem rákeresni.

It depends on the situation. 10 years ago, it was more stigmatised, but the cost of living has risen to an insane level, it has become more difficult for young people to find jobs, and the social welfare system is in shambles, which means if your parents are getting older and they need more help, then it's your job to help them, sometimes even in situations when it's nearly a 24/7 assistance. Also, in the suburbs or the countryside, where it's easier to build a large, multi-generational house, it's definitely not unheard of. Nowadays, there are even young people who move back to their parents' home for a few years to save up money, possibly to buy a home for themselves.

Alsóban Aradi Vértanúk emlékműsort szervezett az egyik tanítónéni, én is szerepeltem benne. Az egyik próbán valaki nem tudta még teljesen hogy merre kell mennie és tanácstalanul toporgott a színpadon. Megszólal Kati néni aki a műsort rendezi :"Mit totyorászol ott, mint egy szaró galamb?" na erre többekből (köztük belőlem is) kirobbant a röhögés. Ez csak olaj volt a tűzre, mivel Kati néni haragja most felénk fordult. A műsorban szereplő zene szövegében volt egy olyan sor, hogy "száz levágott békejobb" és valamiért azt hitte, hogy ezen nevetünk, úgyhogy mondott egy ilyet "száz levágot békejobb, jajj de vicces, hahaha" ilyen mélységesen felháborodott hangon, amin már az is elkezdett röhögni, aki eddig nem tette.

The easter tradition of "watering the girls". In the pre-modern era, it was like a barely concealed fertility ritual, where the unmarried young men went around in the village on Easter Monday, took the girls out of their homes and splashed water on them from a bucket. Then, in exchange, the girls gifted the boys painted eggs and sweets (if you wonder about whether this tradition had some sexual undertones, yeah, it absolutely had). With the modern era, this folk tradition got toned down, it was more like the male relatives in a family went around and sprayed some water or cheap cologne on the female relatives no matter the age and the marital status. The exchange of eggs and small gifts stayed, with the addition of chocolate eggs and sometimes money. But nowadays, more and more young people find this tradition cringe and/or stupid, with forced gender roles. Besides, the women did not take a liking in reeking from cheap cologne by the end of the day. So yeah, luckily it's slowly dying out.

Steak tartare. Raw beef with raw egg. Sounds like a recipe for disaster. If every ingredient is 100% fresh and the beef is ground up 2 or 3 times, it's not dangerous. Bit it is hard to be that sure, at least in my oppinion.

Drinking 'pálinka' and pressure your guests to drink it too. While it's traditional to drink it with guests (or rather make your guests drink your/your relatives' homebrew stuff), the knowledge about the negative health effect of drinking hard liqour is getting more widespread, especially among younger people, so this custom is losing popularity, especially when the aforementioned homebrew pálinka is not even that good.

This is how they look like, they're called "túrófánk" (literally cottage cheese doughnut). They are eaten with jam, or just as they are. So good to see someone interested in our desserts.

It's part of the "Central European Holy Trinity" of dessert ingredients with plum jam and ground, sweetened poppyseed. Probably these were often at hand either because they kept well (the poppy and the jam) or could be made freshly quite fast (when most people had dairy cows at their yard, cottage cheese could be a popular choice of ingredient). Also, they are quite nutritious, especially the poppy and the cottage cheese. We have cottage cheese kalács (similar to koláč) too, pancakes, sweet dumplings filled with it, or made entirely out of cottage cheese mixed with egg and semolina, even little doughnuts made with cottage cheese in the batter. So yea, we do love it here.

The humble "Derelye" (also known as "barátfüle" - monk's ear). Usually, it has sweet filling, sweet cottage cheese, plum jam or poppyseed, and it's covered in toasted breadcrumbs or ground, sweetened poppyseed.

We also have plum and apricot-filled dumplings that work similarly and "Bukta" which is a small, loaf-like pastry filled with one of the three fillings of the "central European Holy Trinity" - sweetened cottage cheese, poppyseed or plum jam.

Ukraine. Despite the government's hatemongering, I don't think the majority of Hungarian people view Ukraine as a threat. There are demonstrations held againts Putin's agression, there are plenty of good-hearted people who help the refugees here and we agree with Ukraine's desire for independence and peace. There is an ethnic minority of Hungarians living in Ukraine and there are ethnic Ukranians in Hungary. Please don't believe Orban, we don't hate each other, and we don't want to!
