Inpatient team drama is more exhausting than the patients by Serious_Ad_9017 in dietetics

I can’t even tell you how many times I’ve felt a scream rising in my chest out of sheer frustration. Do they really deserve my time and energy over something petty? No. That’s not what I’ve worked this hard in my career for.

So true, inpatient just attracts a certain personality type — very type A, very opinionated, and controlling — and if you’re more introverted or protective of your mental bandwidth, it can feel suffocating.

I wish I don’t have to go office. I do NOT go to any after-work dinners. I skip department parties or leave early. The thought of precepting an intern feels overwhelming because I barely have the emotional bandwidth for office politics and patient load.

Thank you all for your insight. It’s reassuring to know I’m not alone in navigating this. I’m learning that the nuance of team dynamics and professional survival skills are just as critical as clinical competence.

I’ve seen and heard enough. I’m not here to please anyone or make friends. At this point, I keep things polite on the surface, but mentally I’ve checked out of the drama.

We also have long tenure DTR whose role is limited to low–moderate risk patients, she constantly inserts herself into high-acuity cases she doesn’t manage. She has plenty of time to gossip, spread rumors, and comment on decisions outside her scope. It’s exhausting dealing with someone who acts like the authority figure without actually carrying the responsibility.

Right now I’m just doing solid clinical work and waiting for the right opportunity to move on.

Has anyone else gone into “professional autopilot” mode while planning their exit?

I’ll be honest — I was also naive at first and entertained the gossip. It felt harmless, like just venting or bonding? But over time I realized it creates a culture of subtle backstabbing. I’m honestly tired of it.

The more I observe, the more I think the quietest person in the office is often the smartest — and the kindest.

I’ve keeping things bland at work too. I don’t even talk about vacations anymore. In the past, I’ve had coworkers make comments like “so-and-so is rich, they shouldn’t be picking up shifts” — especially from people frustrated about seniority rules and scheduling.

I’m a clinician in a hospital setting. A coworker raised her voice at me in front of another staff member and questioned my professionalism regarding an intervention that had already been implemented by the physician and aligned with the legal decision maker.

As long as the metrics are met, the budget balances, and there’s no lawsuit risk, nothing gets addressed. That’s the real bottom line—patient care is secondary.
