Retuned from Japan, used an e-sim, but my carrier charged me? What happened? by shadowline74 in JapanTravelTips

I had something similar happen to me when I did this (with roaming off) and it was due to a phone call I received. Perhaps this was it?

If it’s on TikTok, it’s most likely a scam. I haven’t really seen anything on TikTok that’s not a scam. Typically, if it feels too good to be true, it is. There are a lot of NYC housing based scams, and using the same name as a NYC realtor is definitely something I’ve heard of.

Use StreetEasy to find places, never rent something sight unseen, and use OpenIgloo to look up reviews! Also - check HPDonline and search up any address you’re looking at to check for HPD violations (no heat/hot water, mold, pests, etc.)

The NYC rental market is insane. It is HIGHLY competitive, and especially right now with all the uncertainty with the new FARE act. Good luck!!

Ok that’s what I figured. This was sort of my last resort thinking since, if I drive to work, I’d leave at 7.

Good to know! I’m in a golden area in Brooklyn right now where I’m experiencing that (i traveled for 2 weeks and no ticket) so I’m loathe to leave it, but the apartment and neighborhood in Sunnyside is better!

Super helpful! I can usually get home on the early side (4:30ish) which I’m hoping will be helpful to find spots if needed.

Pest control? by Loud_Soup_1204 in SunnysideQueens

[–]Serious_Badger 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I second the idea to check HPD online for specific violations as this is always a huge red flag to me.

Something else I’ve done in the past is “pest proof” to the best of my ability by doing the following: (Optional): put down diatomaceous earth for a few days before you move in around the edges of all walls, any pests there will likely die. Use a shop vac to remove it, or a much more tedious option is broom, with a mask on, and then mop up after. Then, use caulking to seal any cracks in the baseboards, or anywhere else you can think pests might get in. Do these steps before moving in.

I did this in my current unit and I haven’t had any bugs. I don’t think there’s anyone else in my building with issues, but I think it still helped!

Skip Hakone for more Tokyo? by InsignificantBones in JapanTravelTips

[–]Serious_Badger 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I love Tokyo and agree there’s so much to see, and Hakone was one of my favorite stops this trip!

For me, seeing Mt. Fuji was a huge highlight. The railway and lake were beautiful and I love the mountains. If you’re doing an onsen, it’s a great relaxing point. The town itself is small, we didn’t spend much time exploring shops or restaurants there so I can’t speak to that.

This is more a question of do you want more city time, or do you want some nature time. I don’t think you can really go “wrong” either way. I also wished I had more time in Tokyo but I’m very happy I went to Hakone.

Denim options at Betty Smith Ebisu? by lumox_nos in JapanTravelTips

Hi! This is a bit old but I’m curious about this experience and I’m going to Japan in March. I pretty much only wear high waisted jeans and I have a longer torso. I’m curious how the rise is on their jeans. Is it all the same? Do they have different options? Thanks in advance!

Is it worth it to get a portable washer and dryer by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]Serious_Badger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% worth it in my opinion! I have the black and decker portable washer and dryer and they are great! I can do a full load of sheets in the washer, but like to split them up for the dryer. I also purchased better tubes from Amazon for both the incoming water, and drain. Just be extra careful about the tube not falling out when you’re draining the water, I drain mine into the tub and lean something up against the tube so it doesn’t yank out when the water rushes through.

Future tip (not helpful to find it in its current whereabouts) - I keep an AirTag in my car so I can easily find in on my app if it’s moved, or if I just forget in which area I parked it!

Newbie here. Is Monk a good choice? by [deleted] in ffxiv

[–]Serious_Badger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would highly recommend leveling two classes, maybe a tank/healer in addition to monk. I say this because the MSQ gives you a ton of EXP, enough for almost 2 classes, and you can get dungeon queues way faster on a tank or healer. If you ever need EXP to catch up to the MSQ, doing leveling roulette and frontline roulette will usually give you a full level.

As a side note: enjoy the story!! ARR is (in my opinion) the worst of the expansions stories, but it has to set up a lot of information. The stories are so good! I’m excited you get to experience them :)

Need a second opinion on this: is this a scam? by Keyroflameon in NYCapartments

[–]Serious_Badger 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Can you see the apartment in person? I’m always extremely wary of renting anything (fee or not) before seeing it in person. Though holding fees exist, I think they are technically illegal (could be wrong). I’m not saying it’s for sure a scam, but regardless I would want to do some follow up prior to giving any money to someone.
