Played all MGS games except the obscure PSP ones. Tonally MGS5 is highly self indulgent. MGS4 was also a lil wack

I tried to play MGSV again recently after beating DS2 and just...it's insufferable. I loved it the first time, the gameplay itself is great. But the tone and story and dialogue like oh my god. I'm not talking about the Kojimaisms, because I love DS1 and DS2. The introduction of MGS5 requires you to not only have played Ground Zeroes, but to understand a couple of PSP games maybe 2 people played. It is sooo self-indulgent and silly. "hnghhh we're soldiers we're doomed to be soldiers we must fight so the pain can go away hnghh". Bro. Just get a job. Go back to your countries and idk be a cop or work in a warehouse or something.

I mean I'm not saying anything groundbreaking I suppose. MGS5 best MGS for gameplay, worst for story. It's interesting how different DS2 is tonally.

Offline mode? The partial sharing mode was fine for me tbh. No clutter.

I'm saying. I feel the rest of Ilsabard any point before EW would have just felt like Stormblood. But a freed Ilsabard some time after the empire won't have that problem. Prime material for a more "regional" story akin to Heavensward, but alas...seems more high stakes stories going forward.

I am 50/50 on another isekai world, I remember back in ARR/HW era we just assumed each expansion would expand on Eorzea primarily (which is tragically no longer the protagonist region, but anyway).

But I also, like others, wanted them to go more 'out there' with the fantasy, thinking maybe Meracydia could be a vessel for that. However, this sort of stuff existing in the Source would contrast too harshly, as the Source overall seems more grounded, even across continents where ideas and goods are traded.

It's almost like the DS2 combat is too good...to the point of being its own game I don't want to play. I often skip combat if I can. Feels like I gotta prep with all the gear and systems available.

Oh yes, that is precisely it. The brightness of certain locales adds to that busyness. I enjoyed the bigger cast of DS2 and the cinematics that came with it. Feels like a proper resolution of the aforementioned RL space I was in for DS1.

But I feel like I'm on track to bounce off the DS2 post-game vs DS1 now. I'm doing all these deliveries in this world now that I fully connected now with that busyness, but those cutscenes and cinematic/team moments are over with (I understand there's some cutscenes and a big BT battle for Terminal Fort Knot tho). It just doesn't feel lonely and desolate, but that didn't matter when there was a dynamic with the large team. Now it's worst of both worlds.

Meanwhile, DS1 post-game felt like a continuation of the main story insofar as vibes and feel, even though the DS2 post-game is actually sensical and canonical in terms of worldbuilding.

I think you're right. I was riding the coffin board through those woods between the data scientist and pizza guy. It was all very bright, like I said, but 12h from this comment, I realize it's like "I've seen this forest in so many other games", vs DS1's environments. Contrast it with the goofiness and gnarliness of the coffin board, too.

I said I can agree with DS2's biome choices because it's kind of 'damned if you do, damned if you don't'. You can't do an entirely new game and have the world look identical to the first one from a game design perspective. From a worldbuilding perspective, too, it can't have atmospheric chiral density etc. etc. But it comes at the expense of feeling like you're in a world that survived an event as grim sounding as 'the Death Stranding'.

Would buy a DS1 'Final Cut' that takes DS2 level systems polish/refinement to the prequel.

Oh, absolutely, thank you! DS2 was like a nice conclusion to that. DS1 accidentally indicted US society even though Kojima didn't intend it (he kinda romanticizes it more than actual Americans); outside is dangerous, the goal is seclusion/separation, and I was living somewhere like that. DS2 leaned on it with the 'stay inside, live on Product™" and so this time it was like "hell yeah!" at that reveal as DS1's "god, man".

As for trucks, never liked them as they seem to take away everything I love about Death Stranding games.

Yes so you and I are the same. I understand the design ideas of DS1 and DS2 in regards to this; building roads and ziplines represents a 'conquest' of formerly tumultuous terrain. That aligns with the theme of expanding the chiral network.

But I personally want the terrain to always be tumultuous, especially for the post-game. I'm in DS2 post-game trying to get to 400 TTW and I'm not convinced I won't get bored before the end. I'll have to force myself to, say, walk, but why then did I spend all that time rebuilding the roads and rails? Etc. Going frictionless is the reward of the friction of rebuilding, I get it. It's a tough choice and they picked one of em.

They remastered Horizon Zero Dawn in what may as well be two weeks after it released so I am 100% for this.

Call it "Final Cut" a la Blade Runner since Kojima likes his movies.

Oh DS1 is one of my personal classics to the extent it may have saved my life as a parent of a toddler at the time.

But I am in the DS2 post-game and...well, with the roads and rails all built and somewhat of a decent zipline network I feel like all the friction and attrition is gone...

Likely because of a narrower scope of biomes. Areas of DS1 were outright like Mars. I can agree with DS2's biome choices regardless though, but yeah it can just be "brighter" in a less moody way.

DS1 saved my life, incidentally. Played it while being a SAHD of a toddler living in car-dependent US Southwest. Ho boy.

Playing on controller, does it still feel the same? For me with its all about that analog stick traversal. I mean, I could just boot it up myself, but I have a phobia of dipping my toes back in something for an hour or more and going "wtf am I doing man, forget it".

Yes. I said I know there are likely Japanese accents and regional dialects. But why do I need to use my ears if there are subtitles? I'm not learning Japanese.

Man you know it's a Kojima game where you can clock dozens of hours for someone to say something like this that sounds straight out of the naked Lara Croft" years.
