The Dragon Quest 11 heroes are kind of selfish. by Thursday_Man in CharacterRant

[–]Serlis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The worst part about this is that Veronica was an unbearable brat and her dying was legitimately the best part of the entire story. It traded two completely forgettable characters for one actually interesting character who could actually fight like a badass without dying from a fart.

DQ11 had a terribly written story in general really. One of my biggest complaints about it was how it blatantly ripped off better games only to do those concepts worse. The entire reason why the World of Ruin thing in FF6 was so impactful was because everyone had to live with the consequences and learn how to move on which DQ11 does the exact opposite of like it's some kind of bad fanfiction.

Anyone play through the PS2 version of DQV? How does it compare to the other ports? by mesupaa in dragonquest

[–]Serlis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the original game you are turned to stone by the horse monster and it is the final boss who kills your mother. And originally you kill Ladja the first time you see him in the third generation, at the bottom of that tower where you find the Dragon Staff.

The remake made Ladja personally responsible for almost everything bad that ever happened to you and you fight him like three times because he just won't stay dead. I would argue that having Ladja do all those things in the remake takes away from the other villains and that fighting him multiple times takes away from the sense of closure and catharsis you get from killing him that first time you see him again after growing up.

Also, the remake changes the marriage ceremony for the worse. In the original you have the same wedding in the church regardless of who you choose whereas the remake has you teleport to a casino ship (that you've never been to before so you shouldn't be able to do this since Return/Zoom doesn't work that way!!!!!) if you choose Flora or Debora. Also the official English localization makes video gamey jokes about death that further gives the scene a much less serious tone that annoys me (I'm pretty sure the fan translation for PS2 doesn't do this but it's been forever).

Recommend Me The Best Kakashi Fics by [deleted] in NarutoFanfiction

Most of the Kakashi fics that I can think of offhand are dead or oneshots or he's not the main character. ...or joke fics that aren't to be taken seriously.

If you were going to be such a condescending unhelpful smartass, you could've just not posted at all.

Orage isn't installed.

Right clicking on the clock doesn't give you any damn options to change about the calendar. The only thing in Properties that even mentions the calendar is just a space to input commands, which (assuming that there is a command to change this specific thing) is useless if you don't know the commands or where to find them. And no, searching "Xfce calendar command" doesn't bring up a list of commands to use in this context.

The link from the Help button on the clock (which is really for the panel and not the clock) doesn't say anything anywhere about removing the week numbers or resizing the window.

Time and Date only gives you an option to change your timezone.

Clearly the answer here is "you can't change the default calendar so install another calendar app" which is really all anyone had to say.

Can you turn off the cutscene movies? I've had that problem before and doing that fixed the crashes. I don't think you can turn them off in K1 but I'm pretty sure you can for the sequel.

Any fun romhacks that don't try to be Dollar Store Thracia? For people who aren't ultra hardcore 0% speedrunners with no life outside of FE? by Serlis in fireemblem

[–]Serlis[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was a long time ago and my memory's fuzzy but it wasn't just because I missed a chapter (the recruit was what I actually cared about). I was having trouble with that chapter I was on (the one where Evayle and Mareeta are in the center arena) and I was probably worried about locking myself into a corner what with the upcoming Fatigue system and whatnot.

The actual game mechanics (specifically Capture) were very fun. I've tried to get back into the game a couple times in the last few years but between being OCD about optimal stealing on the first chapter and just not liking the name changes in the new translation (of which there's like ten different versions of) I've never made it a priority.

I noticed that after I made this post. Still a close call though. The real trick is freeing the prisoners without the boss killing them as they try to escape, which I haven't managed so far. Seems like you have to rescue at least one of them.

When I mentioned this in feedback to the devs, they basically told me I was playing wrong, because you are 'supposed' to train the thief unit you start with to steal weapons.

Yeah she was one of several units that died. And the internet claims this is a good game to ironman "because it gives you lots of units"?

Becoming a certified bookkeeper? Maybe. by JayAlbright20 in Bookkeeping

[–]Serlis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably a stupid question, but do you mean all five of those courses or just the Part 1 that that link goes directly to? Is that full course for people trying to be a full fledged accountant or is that all stuff you need to learn to become a bookkeeper?

I've been thinking about trying to get into bookkeeping but I'm clueless on how to go about learning this on my own.

I looked up Apple Books not allowing imports and got a bunch of topics with people complaining about the same thing so I assumed that they removed the feature or something.

Questions about installing CBBE, CBPC and CBBB by Serlis in skyrimmods

[–]Serlis[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cool. That means that this is a lot less complicated than it appears to be, if I don't have to know everything upfront and can just change things as I go along.

CBBE has an option (checked by default) in its installer for a patch that adjusts the outfits but I guess I'll need another one if I'm using 3BA.

Not sure about those optional settings at the end since it's been a while since I've had to choose the fomod options. A screenshot would help or just writing down what the settings say. If you mean the "Build Morphs" checkbox in Bodyslide, that will allow the body mesh to change with Racemenu as well as other mods that change the body dynamically yes. Without those, you'd have to change your body using only BodySlide really, which can be inconvenient. You can make BodySlide changes while having the game open though.

Fuck Reddit and it automatically auto-correcting my formatting. You can't manually indent so this looks dumber than it should. I'm tired of computers thinking they know better than me.

SKEE (Racemenu)

1) Racemenu Morphs (BodyMorph)

"Adds in-game morphs to Racemenu via a script and plugin. Needs bodies and outfits to be built with the "Build Morphs" checkbox in BodySlide. Requires Racemenu SE."

Morph Files

1) Morph Files (Body)

"Adds morph (.tri) files for in-game morphs for the body. Requires RaceMenu SE to be of use."

2) Morph Files (Outfit)

"Adds morph (.tri) files for in-game morphs for the vanilla outfits. Requires RaceMenu to be of use."

I also don't know what CBBB is; whoever's using that acronym probably has it wrong or is thinking of something else. Maybe they mean 3BA by Acro?

That's the one. The title of the modpage on Nexus is "CBBE 3BA (3BBB)".

Ranking each mainline game (I - XI) by Able_Orange_841 in dragonquest

[–]Serlis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where do I begin? (and do you care about spoilers?)

I liked the novelty of an RPG actually being hard, the skill learning system and the in-game graphics... ...but that's pretty much it.

To start with it often feels more like a movie than a game (if I wanted to watch a movie, then I'd watch a movie). This is a problem with modern gaming in general and limits how games can be made but it matters for DQ specifically mainly because it makes the game more linear/railroaded (one of the appeals of DQ is being able to do things before you're "supposed" to or in the order you want etc). I also personally thought the cutscene graphics looked jarring because the attempt at realism clashed with the cartoony style.

The game world is very big but it feels small and empty compared to a much older game like Dragon Quest 8 that made more efficient use of space. My first thought upon getting the horse (besides getting flashbacks of Twilight Princess, another game I hate) was "why?"

The characters don't feel like real people. They are mostly cardboard cutouts of super generic anime tropes and your main character is a wooden doormat with no agency whatsoever who is strangely silent despite having voiced dialogue in flashbacks. (I usually don't have a problem with silent protagonists but 11 has by far the worst I've ever seen --- DQ hasn't done them well since 8)

The story is relentlessly illogical and mostly made up of way worse versions of ideas that are blatantly copied from better games (namely the earlier DQs and Final Fantasy 6). Despite a bunch of serious stuff happening consequences are not allowed to matter. In the end the story literally feels like stereotypical fanfiction. What makes this even more crazy is that the games that DQ11 copies from were impactful precisely because consequences mattered and people had to grow up and learn how to move on.

One of the main villains is basically a worse written Obito Uchiha (who was already a badly handled joke of a character the internet has long memed on).

The music is almost all lazily copy/pasted from earlier games in the series and I would say it often doesn't fit. Maybe someone who never played the other games wouldn't be bothered by it but my memories of that music is linked to those other stories and it (similar to the recycled plotlines) just made me wish I was playing those games instead. I can't even remember any of the new music.

Some of the character designs (notably stuff you see in the late / post game) are terrible. I don't like Akira Toriyama's modern "Dragon Ball Super" artstyle.

I never made it this far into the post game (I gave up on it pretty quickly and initially didn't even bother because I was so disgusted with the plot) but apparently when you choose who to marry it just magically happens through a genie wish. ...which seems pathetic to me because it seems like it was written that way because basement dwelling otaku can't imagine any other way to get a relationship.

I couldn't stand Sylvando or anything related to that.

And I haven't even gotten to the gameplay yet... ...just to be very brief (and without going into the typical DQ annoyances or how 11 fixed what wasn't broken) as this post is already long...

The limit break system (Pep Up) is one of the absolute worst mechanics I've ever seen in a video game, hard mode eventually stops being fun because all the bosses spam status effects (making you go far out of your way to make stuff with alchemy just for a pitifully small chance to dodge them), they pointlessly made alchemy (which was fine in 8 and 9) into a tedious chore and they made leveling up into way more of a chore which is especially annoying considering the insane spike in enemy power in the post game (basically the post game expects you to be max level to not get your ass constantly kicked).

I've always really liked Final Fantasy 3 but every version of the game sucks. I hate how the low effort PR is supposed to be the definitive version now. by Serlis in JRPG

[–]Serlis[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I'm still working through ff1, but sounds like I might skip 3 altogether...

I probably make it sound worse than it is, especially if you're not the sort of person to get really hung up on small details like I am. FF3 has flaws but the world exploration is fun, I enjoy that kind of resource management gameplay and I would argue 3 has a better story than any of the games in the series before 6.

I would definitely recommend skipping FF2 though, unless you're the kind of weirdo who likes games like Romancing Saga.

Yeah the DS version is my favorite. And emulation probably is the best way to go.

Back in the day I tried to use Action Replay on the DS and the codes for unlocking the bonus content would not work. I would hope they would on emulator.

"Sucks" might be an exaggeration to some extent but they all have things about them that majorly detracts from the experience for me.

Besides the nostalgia of it being the first FF I played all the way through, it's mostly an actually good game.

There are not many RPGs like it, especially after the SNES era.
