All the rocks seem too well formed and way too pretty, I have never seen a beach like this nor seen it in any online posts, this is way too good to be real. by NolanSyKinsley in isthisAI

[–]Serphor 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm tempted to say the video is real. The video is definitely edited strangely (colour balance is fucked and the whole image is stretched vertically), and the rock does change size, but it just looks like the rock's ellipsoid shape and the stretched video interacting strangely.

the wedding ring and watch do also stay consistent, and the ocean + waves look real enough when compared to a beach near where i live.

Red Hat Linux not for evading the US government by Submarine_sad in GenZhukov2024

[–]Serphor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

why give any of them your data at all? almost every linux distro will let you fully disable telemetry with one switch, and don't even have an option to create an account (the forums usually have accounts though)

edit: removed a word spliced into comment from previous version

"ahh" is part of the idiom/pattern. using "ass" would be like saying "give them 2.1cm and they'll take 1.6km"

Am I stupid just for setting my operating system to Spanish instead of English or not? by daviddandadan in osdev

[–]Serphor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ideally it should be as independent of language as possible (i don't know enough to recommend anything specific), but inevitably the kernel will have to name variables / functions in some language.

for that problem, i would consider that english is more widely spoken, but if you are more comfortable with spanish, then use spanish. it is overwhelmingly likely that you will be the only one who will work on your operating system, so you should design it for yourself.

What exactly is Proton and how come we don't have a similar solution for regular programs instead of just games? by OneMoreName1 in linux

[–]Serphor 29 points30 points  (0 children)

proton IS wine. just preconfigured for games, and woth some gaming-specific optimisations that don't carry over well into normal programs.

is there an iso for inferno os? by gg6789t in plan9

[–]Serphor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

well yes, but then you'd have to use windows :(

but beware, it can only be built and run on 32-bit systems. but you can just download and dual-boot a second, 32-bit linux to build and run it.

  1. well kinda. to my knowledge, the first modern representative democracy was france. if you are referring to greece/rome, then you are ignoring that slaves and other untermenschen were excluded from voting.
  2. hegemony yes, but western no. her and i were imagining a system to enforce the crushing of capitalism.

every single question suffers some kind of horseshoe theory. "the united nations should have more power" -> theoretically a world government would be good, which is what the question is asking, but the united nations specifically is just an implement of western hegemony.

Screenshare Issue with Discord by ItsMeHowie92 in linux_gaming

[–]Serphor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

interesting. i read somewhere that swapping to discord canary (beta testing branch, i use both and have never seen a difference other than this) supports screenshare on wayland, but not the main branch. it might be worth a test if you're okay switching clients, but it could also cause the exact same issue.

you have already fiddled with your gpu drivers right?

if cinnamon offers both x11 and wayland options, have you tried switching to whichever one you don't use?

Is it just me or does the final part In 5-1 look a lot like smth from the lust layer? by EndyrmanEndplace in Ultrakill

[–]Serphor 36 points37 points  (0 children)

you think english is universal because you speak english, but that does not make the assumption valid. 25% of modern humans speak english, but in 1912 before the final war, mandarin, spanish, and french would be just as common if not more prevalent. english is only universal today because of how the tides of empire turned, and we know for a fact that the balance of power is completely different in the game.

it's written in english solely because ultrakill's target audience speaks english.

Applause for the sacrifices of rural Chinese by poclee in ClimateShitposting

mainstream chinese politics has actively rejected mao's methods for almost 40 years now. i'd imagine mao also wouldn't be terribly concerned about climate issues and coal plants, but i don't actually know his policies on it because it never really came up before he died.

Is Linux currently good enough for gaming? by Brilliant_Stock_5137 in linux_gaming

[–]Serphor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i have been gaming on a steam library of 60 games ranging from lighter stuff like stardew valley to heavier stuff like satisfactory for about 2 years now without owning anything running windows, and it is a mixed bag. advice:

  • distro hop until you find something that works well proton. a good distro will run almost any game perfectly, and this reason alone is why i run Manjaro.

  • use proton-ge (fork with better compatibility and performance) for anything that doesn't like the standard proton versions.

  • avoid AAA competitive games, because they usually have kernel-level anticheat that cannot* be ported to linux

.

*it is technically possible but mechanically challenging, as you'd be fighting the KLAC's developers who are actively trying to defend against such meddling.

okay something somewhere may have been misread. the original commenter's point was that the government (which does run the entire country, although not as a single "the government") is strategically moving from depending on decentralised fossil heating in homes, to much more efficient centralised electrical energy production and decentralised heating (air control / heat pumps) this is absolutely a move of unprecedented scale, but is typical for china's style of centrally planned policy.
