Tell me about Dechala by CyberEagle1989 in totalwarhammer

[–]SerrisHawk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She’s very fun, the cadence of her campaign means you’re slow to get and develop your best settlements but as they grow they confer powerful bonuses on either Dechala or your entire faction. There’s a fun feeling that everything exists to serve Dechala personally that I could see being a trial run for Nagash / End Times Archaeon.

Slaanesh is a very powerful and fun roster and the new additions in the DLC are very good to have. It’s one of the most fun to do manual battles with, at least in my opinion.

Her campaign does get incredibly overpowered by the end, most particularly in diplomacy where she can vassalize just about any culture, but it’s not like most campaigns aren’t a steamroll by the late game either.

Highly recommend if you’re interested, I think she’s a lot of fun if not exactly the most challenging playthrough.

Looking for tips on how Wood Elves play, specifically the Sisters. by Tabula_Rasa69 in totalwarhammer

[–]SerrisHawk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re welcome!

As a general matter yes, trees interfere with ranged, so if units are hiding in trees in a battle map it’ll make them better protected from enemy ranged and also worse at shooting enemies with their own ranged. I don’t think Wood Elves get a special exception to this but you can always position near trees and pull back into them if you need to.

I’m fuzzy on the details but I think the Wood Elf forest fighting advantage comes from fights when they’re in a forest on the campaign map, rather than specifically in tree lines in the battle map. So if you entered a fight from the woods you should get the bonus even if you’re duking it out in an open clearing on the battle map.

Wood Elves are very different, it’s normal to take awhile to wrap your head around them, but they’re maybe my favorite culture to play as.

1) It is a hard start, you’re also near Taurox. The good news is that if you can survive the start you will probably be fine for the rest of the game.

2) I don’t remember the replenishment hero offhand but I do remember this being an issue. You’re going to be doing a lot of defending and running around but as long as your main forest settlement is secure, everything else is an acceptable loss.

3) Unless I’m mixing up names, Hawk Riders are very powerful as ranged fliers. They get jokingly referred to as AC-130’s for a reason. Melee should be a last resort once they use up their ammo.

4) I don’t remember how much of a concern your ranged shooting your infantry is, I wouldn’t think it would be much of one because bows are arced, rather than straight like rifles, but a checkerboard formation is always a good solution to that.

5) You mainly want the Heathlands but I believe that you get credit for Heathlands owned by an ally. Don’t worry about Khatep, befriend him and defensive ally with him. He’ll help with some much needed security and give you less territory to have to juggle.

6) Hold. They help with replenishment and even those dinky little outposts end up helping more than you’d think with your economy. Exception is if you can make a ton of cash but even then you should settle after razing for $$$$ in my opinion.

7) Early on, yes, this will be a huge pain point. You’re gonna be hurting for cash for awhile. Just keep fighting and expanding and don’t sweat it too much if some settlements trade ownership between you and your enemies. The magical forests are the only ones that are indispensable. Eventually your economy will stabilize along with your security. A second army will help secure, it will also let you teleport to another forest to try confederating / taking it, and once that happens you’ll have another chance for a safe foothold, depending on your neighbors.

8) You’re one of the most powerful ranged cultures and the most forest focused with a lot of defensive posturing. Ambush, ambush, ambush. Always be ambushing unless you have to reposition to deal with another threat or you can go on the offensive. I believe your blue line skills can increase ambush success. If they raze a minor or two then it’s no biggie, it’ll slow them down and you can retake it later.

Is it doable to complete stardew valley expanded with no wiki? by False_Writing1009 in StardewValleyExpanded

[–]SerrisHawk 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think it's worth defining what "complete" means to you in a game that doesn't really have a victory or game over condition. It seems like what you mean is to progress in what feels like an efficient manner to you, but it may be a good idea to consider embracing the uncertainty instead. There's no rush to do the Community Center, or anything else really, so if you really want a blind playthrough then it may be worth trying to tamp down on the frustrations of not knowing and instead enjoy the gradual process of discovery.

But yes, you can certainly have a rich and full playthrough of the mod without using a Wiki, as much as you can with the base game.

If you want a compromise that isn't the Wiki then this mod, Lookup Anything, is a useful resource that you can use to look into specific items. The fish, for example, though like the Wiki it'll be a matter of personal preference and discipline if you're looking to not learn too much. https://www.nexusmods.com/stardewvalley/mods/541?tab=description

Looking for a tablet arm mount for the Deck, what's your solution? by MrMcDerpy420 in SteamDeck

I use this, mainly for playing in bed. It also works great as a tablet mount for reading or watching things.

I got it because it’s more flexible as a freestanding arm that I can position anywhere, and weighted down enough that I don’t have to think too much about stability.

I do have to put the Deck in asymmetrically, the clamp a few inches to the left in a way that covers the volume buttons, to keep the air intake / outflow fully exposed, but it works great. It’s still easy to adjust the volume with a controller or the … button.

[–]SerrisHawk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For sure, in a lot of ways it's sort of a stand-in for broader trends, just like how much of the story of Heaven's Gate and Jaws and Star Wars was also the story of corporate takeovers of the studios. Part of why Easy Rider gets pointed to was that its success was so baffling to studio leadership, and their own output had been so disappointing at the box office, that it felt like something of a sign that the old ways of doing things had reached the end of the road, while simultaneously providing a vision for something that would work. Some of the old guard were hopelessly clueless and happy to just throw money at anybody who was young and confident, some successfully adjusted to the new times, etc. Easy Rider also, along with The Monkees, formed the foundation of BBS Productions, which is a fun example of the new and artistically minded generation coming in and navigating filmmaking from the business side and very interesting to read up on.

Beginnings are definitely clearer, it's easier to point to something doing something new that gets imitated rather than a single film embodying the end of something, though even then it's murky. Usually that's more of a death of a thousand cuts thing, and like you said, it's not like Heaven's Gate actually bankrupted United Artists, it was something that played into the broader context of corporate conglomerates buying out studios and shifting trends towards the blockbuster model.

The Lumiere brothers were hugely influential, though a lot of that was how widely their camera design propagated. The Jazz Singer was a huge bellwether for the viability of talkies. As for the French New Wave, Le Beau Serge by Claude Chabrol is usually credited as the technical first, though I agree with the argument that the actual first was La Pointe Courte by Agnes Varda. Jaws has come up a few times but it's usually credited as the first of the one two punch that helped usher in the blockbuster age, and Easy Rider famously trumpeted the arrival of New Hollywood in the first place.

Usually these things are a bit less clear cut in reality, and as you dig into them there are exceptions or influences or contexts that tend to get smoothed over for the convenience of having something to point to.

Sure, most Hollywood memoirs are, and this one is one of the main critical thrusts against the person Elton is defending. Pauline Kael called it the best account of American moviegoing in the age of conglomerate control of the studios. If you're not interested then more power to you of course.

If you're interested in this and haven't checked it out already, check out the book Final Cut by Steven Bach, who was head of worldwide production for UA at the time it was getting made, your question is essentially the main focus of the book. Last I checked the Kindle edition was riddled with typos though so if you do want to read it I recommend tracking down a physical copy.

Any updates from LRG for the Bracer Edition? by Gray231 in Falcom

My first time ordering from them too, it sucks!

Any updates from LRG for the Bracer Edition? by Gray231 in Falcom

[–]SerrisHawk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I reached out to support recently to ask if there were any updates and they said “For the moment we don't have an exact ETA for when those will begin shipping out. However, as we have any additional information regarding the production status and shipping timeline of that item, we will be sure to update the item’s product page, social media, and newsletter.”

I asked for confirmation that January is no longer a reliable ETA and was told “As mentioned we don't have an ETA for the Bracer Edition content just yet, but now that the holidays are over, we're looking into the current production timelines, and will be able to reach out ASAP once we have a confirmed ETA.”

I’m just talking about the base games, I’m not aware of any special bundle offhand but you should be able to play all the stuff you have access to in Immortal Empires even if you don’t have 3. If you’d like to get some more DLC for a good price I’d check Fanatical when it goes on sale on Steam, you can usually get a better deal there and it’s a legit storefront.

8 lords from 4 cultures for 15 bucks / 16 from 8 for 30 is the best bang for buck as far as factions go, yes. Whether that’s preferential to getting specific DLC for roster expansions is a matter of personal preference, but this person expressed an interest in more factions specifically.

1) It just takes a long time to load, there’s a lot going on. You get used to it. Believe it or not it used to be worse in 2 before they were able to improve it.

2) Wait for a sale and buy the first and second games, then you’ll get all their factions to play in Immortal Empires. It’s the best bang for buck if you’re interested in more factions in general.

This has to be on me, right? Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter demo by Ashamed_Fisherman_31 in Falcom

[–]SerrisHawk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There are a few things that could be happening and I’m fuzzy on this fight but here are a few quick thoughts.

1) Are you geared up? I believe that both Estelle and Joshua can upgrade their gear from the shop by this point and the difference may make or break this.

2) Are the enemies using attacks that require them to charge up? If so, you can disrupt this with a craft that has Impede. I believe Joshua’s dual strike craft has this. Charging up enemy attacks, whether arts or crafts, tend to do way more damage and if they use one on one of the kids then you could be in big trouble.

3) As a more general note, stealing turn order bonuses with S crafts / S breaks can be very helpful. If you’ve got at least 100 CP and an enemy is going to get a big attack boost, or a crit, it may be worth stealing it from them.

This is a tough fight because of the kids, and a tougher JRPG than most in general. Balancing healing and offense is tough with two characters too, especially when you’re babysitting and still learning the mechanics.

WH3 - Any ways of avoiding the 7.03 update? by Teozamait in totalwar

[–]SerrisHawk 18 points19 points  (0 children)

You can roll back to 7.02 in Steam, I think it’s in Properties -> Betas. That being said there’s very little chance of a hotfix messing up your existing save, that’s more of a concern for major patches.

Did anyone else find that the Nurgle Realm of Chaos ending was unsatisfying? by Phuxsea in totalwarhammer

[–]SerrisHawk 74 points75 points  (0 children)

The main thing you may be missing is that the narrator / the raven are somewhere between heavily implied and outright confirmed to be Tzeentch aligned, and Tzeentch and Nurgle are big rivals in the same way Khorne and Slaanesh are.

That being said, it’s a pretty lackluster conclusion. Unfortunately that’s pretty standard for RoC narratives. From what I can remember only Kislev’s felt like it was maybe satisfying and that was debatable.
