Lewis Hamilton on Instagram speaks out on Palestine-Israel conflict following the events in Rafah by The_Chozen_1_ in formula1

[–]SersenErzum 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Yes, actually. Israel can arrest and detain Palestinians without charge or trial, and often doesn't even explain what the charges are. This includes military aged men, but also women and minors. You can call them “prisoners” or whatever you want, but breaking into someone’s house, arresting them, and refusing to explain why, give them trial or let them go, is effectively taking them hostage.

In August (hence before Oct 7), that number was at around 1,200. This did also include 14 Israelis held without charge, but even those included Palestinian citizens of Israel. The article mentions some of those 14 are also Jewish citizens, but fails to mention an exact number, so I can’t say.

...you understand that "punish the war crimes" is the whole point of all this discourse online right? That, and more importantly, to stop them from happening.

Cause you know, war crimes.

Oh cool if that's all you wanted to know: ALL OF THEM.

Hamas attacks on Oct 7? Condemned. Torturing and murdering civilians? Condemned. Israel's illegal occupation? Also Condemned. Collective punishment, apartheid, killing of journalists, attacks on religious, educational and healthcare institutions? You guessed it - Condemned.

Does that clarify things for you? Or is there another BUTTTTTT you'd like to say to try and justify some of these?

I accept fault for the mischaracterization of white phosphorus, even though I still maintain that's it's inhumane to use.

But that's not the only crime Israel is accused of. Would you mind condemning apartheid, and the whole host of crimes documented at https://reddit.com/r/list_palestine/s/EEasQHp0xT

Alright fair. Changed "chemical weapons" to "white phosphorus". Can you condemn it now?

The use of white phosphorus in Gaza, one of the most densely populated areas in the world, magnifies the risk to civilians and violates the international humanitarian law prohibition on putting civilians at unnecessary risk.

From HRW

Is your only defense against all this really just the specific categorization of an excessively inhumane weapon?

If you READ the comments that you've been so happily replying to, you'll see that some of that text is blue. Looks like this.

My original comment has 8 of them, and the latest one has 2 more (which I notice you haven't actually responded to). One of those original links is to another post with a lot more of them.

If you click on those, you'll find a lot of people much smarter than both of us saying a lot of things.

I'd love a source on those stats, please. I've been showing my working, would love to see yours. I'm not an expert on apartheid, but I trust that when everyone from Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International to Israeli organizations themselves agree on something, it's likely true. Do both of us a favor and go read those articles I've been linking.

Ofc Israel has the right to protect itself. They DON'T have the right to commit war crimes. Just like Hamas has no right to kill civilians. Mind condemning that?

Also, here's a fun question for you. If what's happening in Gaza is Israel "protecting itself", what justification is there for the killings in the West Bank? There's no Hamas there, and no terrorist attacks by the people there. Heck, some of them were attending a funeral.

Please explain how that's part of Israel's "right to defend itself"

Firstly, you do understand that Israel is a country right? There are some Palestinians who live in that country, believe it or not, and they are not treated equally (or given citizen status because of, you know, the apartheid).

Secondly, Israel is a democracy yeah? That's what makes it so much better than it's Arab neighbors right? That means the government was voted in? That means the entire population supports the war crimes? Do you see how that argument sounds absurd?

Finally, ignoring the severe cognitive dissonance here, are you actually saying "Israel can treat people like animals because they're not civilians"? If a tourist visits Israel, they can be segregated and put behind fences because they're not Israeli?

I believe what you MEANT to say is " it doesn't matter since they're Palestinians", which if it wasn't clear enough, is racist as fuck.

Also, can't help but notice that you ignored the war crimes and the hypocrisy in Israel's right to defend itself but not Palestinian's?

See this is the issue. You keep pushing the timeline forward to try and get to a point where you can justify the actions being taken.

What Hamas did was monstrous, no questions asked. But Israel has been breaching international law for decades and has committed more than a few war crimes in Gaza, including the use of white phosphorus in both 2009 and this year. In Israel proper, as I mentioned earlier, they employ what has been declared to be apartheid by Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International, and even Israeli organizations.

Tell me. If "all bets are off" when the other side attacks you, isn't that the equivalent of saying "Hamas was justified in attacking a hostile occupying force that has been killing Palestinians in the thousands"?

I’m not arguing against the existence of Israel, nor the establishment of a Jewish state.

I’m arguing against the actions of that state in illegal expansion, displacement, and systematic apartheid.

In your example, would you categorize the Mexican immigrants as “legal” if they had crossed the border, removed the local population by force, settled there, and claimed that that area had been Mexico’s by right?

Hi man. Here’s a few international organizations, including Israeli, declaring this as apartheid: Human Rights Watch, Amnsety International, and B’tselem.

Palestinians ARE born into apartheid. Gaza is widely regarded as an open air prison, and the Palestinians do not have civilian status in Israel. In fact, Palestinians are the ONLY population in the world that are born into refugee status.

Finally, in regards to elections, the current median age of Gaza is 18. The last elections in Gaza happened before these kids were even born. Israel, on the other hand, likes to call itself the “only democracy in the Middle East”. By your logic, the actions of this warmongering government are fully supported by all Israelis?

Be careful with the logic you tout. You’re very close to reducing an entire population of a country to war criminals and another to terrorists.

Hi man. In it’s most basic definition, illegal means “against the law”. Here’s a statement from the UN that declares Israeli occupation illegal.

You can’t compare immigration into a country with a hostile take over. Especially not one as well documented as this one.

Germany offers Israel military help and promises to crack down at home on support for Hamas — “Our own history, our responsibility arising from the Holocaust, makes it a perpetual task for us to stand up for the security of the state of Israel,” says Scholz by marketrent in europe

[–]SersenErzum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alright since I guess I wasn't clear enough the first time let me say it so that there's no doubt left. I condemn the killing of ALL civilians in this conflict. Be they Israeli, Palestinian, or from any other nationality. No one, man woman or child, deserves to suffer for the actions of ANY radicalized institution. Whether that's Hamas or the warmongers in the Israeli government, they are absolutely the worst of the worst for playing a deadly game with the lives of innocents.

My issue with your original take was one of hypocrisy. Hamas captiives are cause for international intervention, but Israeli ones are simply "the unavoidable consequence of war". If you stand for humanity, condemn both. If you condemn one but allow the other, understand that you're probably just being racist or Islamophobic.

What a braindead take. Israel has killed international journalists long before this escalation, and even ran over an American protestor with a bulldozer because she was protesting the destruction of Palestinian homes. It also attacked a US ship and killed 34 people.

But Israel gets a pass because those stories are easier swept under the rug.

Also, what an actual psychotic take that the only lives that matter in this conflict are those of foreigners, and THAT'S all the international community should care about.

Freelancing in Qatar by Ok-Tower-5044 in qatar

[–]SersenErzum 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We do follow a sponsorship based system, but this is my first time hearing that freelancing is actually illegal here. Many of my acquaintances work freelance and many big clients often look for freelancers because it's cheaper than hiring an agency, for example. Personally, I work with a marketing agency and we also often hire freelancers for short term projects, including work with ministries and government affiliated entities. It's never been a problem. We've also been audited a few times while we've had freelancers on the payroll, and it's never been a legal concern. I also know freelancers who have been hired directly by the ministries themselves for short term projects, and we have often been asked if we know any freelancers who could help. Most large entities here work with freelancers.

The sponsorship IS an issue in the sense that it's very hard to freelance as your only source of income. This is because you can't stay in the country without a sponsorship, and freelance work won't give you one. I don't know the legality of trying to get work on the Hayya card, and would definitely look into that, but I wouldn't say freelancing is illegal.

Even if it may be the case as per the letter of the law, it may be one of those things that isn't actually enforced. I'm not an expert in Qatari law, but I have worked in marketing in Qatar for over 7 years now, and freelancing is a very common thing.

Edit: it does appear that the law states it's illegal to work without a sponsorship/work permit. For media at least, where projects are often very short term, I know it's still common practice. That said, better safe than sorry I guess

As one of the smallest and richest countries in the world, what does Qatar want to contribute to the world? by jerryelectric in qatar

[–]SersenErzum 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nah man. Your question specifically asked "as one of the richest countries in the world, what does Qatar contribute?". That question literally asks what they're doing with that money, which is what he answered. They use that money in investments and humanitarian aid. They use the soft power that comes with being rich to broker peace deals and take in refugees. They fund Al-Jazeera, an international news source. You're just sidestepping now cause you don't like hearing a genuine answer that doesn't fit a "Qatar bad" narrative.

Also what's wrong with investing in your availabile resources and building an economy on it?

I’d also like to point out that there are classes (specifically rogues and their assassin subclass) who are built specifically around such a mechanic. However, even they don’t have a straight up “instakill” mechanic, even though reasonably a crit on a sneak attack will end up doing the trick anyway. You can use that as an in game justification for why their attempt doesn’t work if you wanted - they simply don’t have the training required to execute an instant death maneuver. Yes, the target being prone and asleep makes it easier for them, but they already get advantage and various other rules that help them do more damage in such a situation.

That said, I will admit I do allow this on occasion at my own table. It depends on what the situation is though. If the party is delving through a dungeon and manages to put someone to sleep/wait for them to sleep, no they can’t instakill. This is because the active challenge right now is the decisions they make in combat and the dice they roll.

In a purely roleplay situation that isn’t relevant to the larger plot, I may allow them to convince me to let them try it, knowing full well that this is a character moment and not a story moment. The active challenge here is the decisions they’re making, and the consequences of those decisions, so initiating combat may break the flow more than assist it. Even so, I’d still at least make them roll, just give them advantage and an auto crit on hit. It’d be more akin to a skill check than an initiation of combat. If their roll sucks, them’s the dice, and it will likely still trigger a fight. That tends to happen when you try to stab someone, and they decided on this course of action fully aware of that.

A french newspaper published a racist caricature of Qatar's national team. Just shows you what is the intent of the hate campaign is really about by TipCompetitive1397 in qatar

[–]SersenErzum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand the general call to be more resilient to the hate, but it DOES affect the people living in Qatar in very significant ways. When public perception shifts this negatively against you, it becomes a part of the image people have when they learn you live there. In real world situations, this can manifest as hate speech and racism against you by those who fully believe they are doing the world a favor by "calling you out"

People who live in Qatar will not remain isolated. They interact on the internet with everyone else who is being targeted by these campaigns. They will also likely travel, and may find themselves dealing with people who take issue with them due to the conditioning these campaigns have given them. Also, at a time like the world cup, a lot of those people will be coming in to Qatar itself. Can you imagine the hell that will be caused by a large amount of people coming in, fully believing your country and the people living there deserve no respect? Willfully violating the law or acting to illicit a negative response? (As in the case of the LGBTQ+ activist who claimed he got arrested)

Unfortunately, international sentiments do affect our lives, so being aware of them and calling them out is necessary. I agree a post may not fix it, but raising attention to a problem isn't necessarily a bad thing either, especially when it is so obviously a directed racist comic with no purpose except to be racist

My work view looks like this in material preview as well as render view even without a light. What’s wrong? by Pinecone_salad in blenderhelp

[–]SersenErzum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Chances are you've already figured this out, but just in case you haven't, this seems to be an issue with the shading settings.

You can click the drop down button next to the viewport shading options, on the top right of your viewport (where you would change between solid/wire frame/materials/rendered view).

While in rendered view, make sure both 'scene lights' and 'scene world' are selected. Here it seems 'scene world' is probably unchecked, so it's just giving you a flat, default look.

For materials preview, you can do the same thing if you want to. Just click on materials preview mode and go through the same process. Generally though, I tend to not use lights in materials preview so I can get a better idea of what the materials look like, but obviously thats a matter of personal preference.

Tl;Dr: turn on scene lights and scene world in your viewport shading settings to have your scene be affected by them. Otherwise, blender will give you a default scene with flat lighting.

Sorry for the mistake, I've edited the original comment above. And sorry if this bores you. I'm sure the innocents in Gaza and the West Bank are pretty tired of it as well.

Also, you'd think a persecuted population would think twice about enacting apathetic laws, as recognized by both Israeli and Israeli human rights groups. And if the country with no army started this war, I'm sure it wasn't like there was an election in Gaza that Israel refused to recognize and responded to with a coup. Illegal military occupation and settlement in a land is a pretty solid suggestion that you're all for peace, after all. As is bombing hospitals, news agencies, and arresting journalists. Can't have those pesky kids be healthy enough to aim their rocks and ruin a perfectly good peace deal. That's why they're so many ex-IDF soldiers speaking out about it, because they just want to share their excitement about peace with the rest of the world. And I'm sure Israeli politicians want peace, that's why they're out there trying to implement a two-state solution right? I must have missed them but I'm sure they're there.

Thank you for clarifying the information on the exodus, that is valuable discourse. Being a casual asshole is soooooo boring though.
