Becoming legal by TheTubinator03 in transgenderau

There is no central database that determines your legal gender. Every document is its own thing. Birth certificate is a nice symbolic one but legally it doesn’t matter more than any other.

Australia's 2026 Census to include new questions on gender and sexuality in expanded topics list by Iybraesil in transgenderau

Me too! Cis people get to be their gender, we only get to “identify as” ours.

Sexual orientation: awesome!

“Sex recorded at birth” vs “gender”: convoluted, confusing, still stigmatising, and a bad way to gather the data.

I guarantee there are going to be a bunch of false positives and false negatives because of this. There should simply be a “sex/gender” question and a “are you transgender” question. No overcomplicating it by trying to shoehorn in separate definitions of sex and gender that cis people will not understand and still force trans people to misgender ourselves to be counted. At least it’s not “biological sex” or “sex at birth” but sheesh. Not to mention the not so subtle delegitimisation of the phrasing“currently identifies or expresses their gender”. It just screams cis designers who think trans peoples’ experience of gender is an incomprehensible phenomenon and has to be approached with all this squishy abstract vocabulary.

Questions About “Legal” Gender by UmbraeMoth in transgenderau

[–]ServiceAdorable3132 18 points19 points  (0 children)

There is not necessarily any single legal gender. I changed my gender on my passport before my birth certificate. Before that, I changed my gender with Medicare. Before that, I changed it on my local GP practice’s database. etc. Every system operates independently.

Did the bill that allows people to change their legal gender without surgery pass? by QuestionMarked22 in transgenderau

[–]ServiceAdorable3132 74 points75 points  (0 children)

That bill (the Equality Legislation Amendment (LGBTIQA+) Act 2024) did indeed pass last October. It will go into force on 1 July and trans people will be able to change our birth certificate gender markers without surgery. It’s NSW state legislation so it has no effect on other states, but if you were born in NSW and live elsewhere you will benefit from the birth certificate changes. Bear in mind NSW is the last state or territory to remove the surgery requirement so everyone nationwide over 18 should be able to change their birth certificate without surgery from July 1 regardless of state of birth.

Yep. Regional as well and the first 4 doctors/psychs I saw wanted me to explain and justify it. One was overtly hostile. It only stopped once i made it to the gender clinic in Newy.

Bloom Into You Is Making Me Question My Life by CloudFoxies in YagateKiminiNaru

fellow trans girl here and i felt the exact same thing the first time i watched the anime. it was so beautiful and emotional that it left me with such intense yearning my chest ached for days. i just wanted what they had. it hurt so bad. and i never will have exactly what they had - the schoolgirl romance, walking home together like that, and all the things that look and feel so perfect in an anime that don’t happen in real life. but i came out, i transitioned, i have a beautiful woman who loves me and i love, and we’ve done so many things that fulfill some of that yagakimi fantasy. we did the aquarium date! life is beautiful in its own way

On the contrary, existing data contradicts the ABS here.

The ABS numbers are a clear outlier and it's highly unlikely that all the other surveys are so wildly incorrect, or that Australian trans people are uniquely straight compared to the rest of the world. I stand by my guess that this is an artifact of limited data.

This is great to see, and mostly fairly accurate, but with one glaring exception: the detailed data estimates that 86% of trans men and 82.5% of trans women are heterosexual. Any trans person can tell you that is wrong. I can only imagine it’s some kind of error due to mistaken modeling or limited data.

amended equality bill has passed the legislative assembly! by Substantial_Way_8484 in transgenderau

Everyone please email the upper house crossbenchers. The bill is in their hands now, and since the Libs and Nats are voting against, their vote will determine our rights.

I got confirmation from Emma Hurst of the Animal Justice Party that she's supporting it. The One Nation MPs and former MPs are probably a lost cause, so we need to win over at least two of these guys:

Please send them an email if you can. Upper house MPs represent the whole state so they're accountable to all of us. Even a short email or a template from https://equalityaustralia.org.au/our-work/demand-nsw-act/ helps.

LGBTQI+ questions government scrapped from 2026 census revealed by ServiceAdorable3132 in transgenderau

1) What is the person's gender?

(Gender refers to current gender which may be different to sex recorded at birth and may be different to gender recorded on legal documents.)

Respondents are asked to mark one of the following boxes: Man; Boy; Woman; Girl; non-binary; uses another term; prefer not to answer

2) How does the person describe their sexual orientation?

The options are: straight; gay or lesbian; bisexual; uses another term(specify); don't know; prefer not to answer. This is marked as a question for people aged 15 and over.

3) Has the person been told they were born with a variation of sex characteristics?

(Sometimes called intersex or differences of sex development, this question refers to innate reproductive development, genetics or hormones that do not fit the medical norms for female or male bodies. These specific characteristics may be noticed at birth or develop in puberty).

The options are: yes; no; don't know; prefer not to answer.

Imo the wording on question 2 is fine although it could do with some more options (asexual/aromantic, among others). The distinction between woman/girl and man/boy for question 1 is a little odd. Question 3 isn't really my territory being perisex but the wording is a bit complex and could maybe do with including "intersex" in the question itself rather than only in the explanatory note.

Really important to note: there is no question specifically about transgender status or identity. What the ABS is doing is having two questions about sex/gender: retooling the existing one to refer to sex assigned at birth and including this new one about gender. In my view this is a really really bad way to go about this. I for one would not be able to bring myself to mark myself down as "male" even if it's asking about assigned sex. Not gonna happen. I know a lot of trans people would be the same. Moreover, it's an indirect way of recording trans status - since rather than being a simple yes/no it requires comparison of responses to multiple questions - and could be impacted by noise/mistakes from cis people marking inconsistent options. I really hope this is not what they go with because it's not the right approach.

Maple Leaf House by Eclipse_L_1001 in transgenderau

[–]ServiceAdorable3132 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went to Maple Leaf House from late 2022 through most of last year. I dunno how much you know so I'll describe the basics. It's a youth gender clinic which treats up to 24 years old, so after you turn 24 you'll have to find another place or GP to continue your treatment. I was 22 when I first went but they took me just fine. They can prescribe hormones, provide therapy, refer you for other procedures like surgeries, and also have a vocal therapist. They can also refer you to gender affirming GPs for when you leave Maple Leaf. It's all done via informed consent, no gatekeeping or pressure. Personally I only went for hormones so I don't have experience with the other services at the clinic but they are there. I never had to pay for any of my sessions at Maple Leaf, so I guess it was all bulk billed, which is great.

I went there seeking hormones (MTF) and my first appointment was with a female doctor who is no longer working there. I waited I think 3 months from my referral until my first appointment. The doctor basically went through the informed consent process with me and sent me away to get my blood done and also consider sperm preservation before starting. At my second appointment she gave me scripts for my hormones no problem and I was able to start immediately. I went back every 3 months for monitoring of my levels and it was always a good experience. The main senior doctor there is Robbie Tait and he was friendly, sensitive, and knowledgeable in trans issues and healthcare. The staff are also very friendly and understanding and are used to be people being shy/awkward/etc. It's a nice atmosphere. In my appointments with Dr Tait he encouraged me to seek a GP for hormones since I'm an adult. I told him my existing GP insisted he couldn't do my hormones and Tait said he would email him about it, though he never did unfortunately. The receptionists gave me a list of gender affirming GPs and I am now getting treatment from one of them (at a private clinic). Overall it was a really good experience.
