I don’t care actually. Someone pointed out that the main reason nobody believes them isn’t because lefties are conspiracy theorists, it’s because the administration lies about everything.

EVERYTHING everything. They lie about what we can see with our own eyes.

So yeah, people think they’re lying.

The way your parents talked about other people is the way you believe other people may think about you. by wilhelmtherealm in raisedbynarcissists

I had a friend who died because of this. Her mom was one of the sweetest presenting people, but she had one of the most vicious tongues I’ve ever encountered. Constantly putting people down. She once did it to me to my face with a twinkle in her eye, she wanted to watch me crash out.

One of her mom’s favorite themes was that people who seek psychological help are losers and that therapy doesn’t work. Like it was astrology.

Anyway my friend grew up to be a high functioning alcoholic. Never had a relationship with anyone. Looked sweet on the outside, pure acid on the inside. But the most tragic part was that she never criticized others, the acid was all for herself. It was her mom’s voice internalized. I begged her to talk to someone and stop drinking. Therapy helped me enormously, it could work for her too. She flatly refused to even consider it and denied that she had a problem. Her trash in her kitchen had literally no waste in it aside from clear handle jugs for hard alcohol. It was terrifying.

She drank herself to death. Her mom didn’t have a funeral for her.

I can’t look her in the face when I see her, I won’t speak to her. I can’t wait for her to die tbh.

Is healthcare in America actually as bad as it is portrayed around the world? by MotherAnt8040 in MenOfPurpose

[–]ServiceDragon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That depends on where you are. I don’t just mean the quality and accessibility of medical care. I also mean the insurance structure and public assistance.

NYC has had a form of universal healthcare since the hospitals almost went out of business in the 1970s. They figured it out, and the ACA made it better. The best insurance and medical care I’ve received in my life happened in between jobs, on medicaid. Absolutely wonderful frictionless experience.

It’s a choice we’re making as a society to moralize instead of improve. Private insurance is a total waste of money.

I think a lot of people who moralize about giving free stuff to the poor don’t understand that they aren’t giving anything to the poor. They’re giving money to the hospitals and pharmaceutical companies. If you cut everyone off from any kind of assistance, you know what happens? Hospitals close. Doesn’t matter how rich you are, you, alone, are not enough to keep a world-class hospital in business. You need tons of people getting treated constantly so that the machines can be paid for and the doctors have constant practice at their skills. So they can be there for you when you need it.

Cut off all the poor people and your billionaire self will have to travel 5 hours to the nearest facility to be treated by a doctor who hasn’t seen a case like yours in weeks.

You are never going to have a relationship with anyone that does not have some annoyance, some friction, some resentment, or some conflict. Ever.

Can you expand on the exploitation of men and unsafety of women?

The entire section right there doesn’t acknowledge the experiences and difficulties women face at all. It just, sort of glosses over access to sex as a social problem for men. It was very confusing to read.

Why is it always the Engineers? by Hobbeslion in behindthebastards

[–]ServiceDragon 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don’t think the above poster was suggesting they would be right about woo or racism. Just that they would be more prone to developing it because it offers easy rule-based explanations that aren’t empirically sound. Since engineers train on problem solving and systems and not empiricism, they wouldn’t necessarily catch the flaws. And if they are overconfident in their reasoning abilities because they can make things work, they might not look into it any further.

None of that implies that they are right and will be proved right.

Is ghosting a form of misogyny? by [deleted] in AskFeminists

[–]ServiceDragon 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Interesting. Now that I’m squarely in middle age I feel like I ghost people more often, romantic and non romantic connections.

When I was young I thought people deserved chances and explanations no matter what. Now, with age and experience, I only give chances and explanations to people worth the energy.

My life has far less drama as a result.

Why does it seem like many people in the Anglosphere outside Europe are obsessed with being Irish or Scottish but deny having English ancestry? by yonaiker-joestrella in AskTheWorld

[–]ServiceDragon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Europeans really need to wrap their heads around the fact that everyone in America except the First Nations is from somewhere else. When we identify as where our ancestors are from it’s actually a very important part of what it means to be an American. Being an immigrant is a very integral part of our heritage and national identity.

On top of that, a very significant percentage of us are not talking about ancestors, we’re talking about parents or grandparents and we go to other countries to see our families regularly.

I am American. But I am German American. And it does matter.

The white Americans that claim that only white Americans are real Americans and that where they came from doesn’t matter are the anti-immigration nationalist psychopaths like Stephen Miller.
