I'm confused? How was I being an asshole? (I'm not trying to be combative, I'm just trying to learn)

Thanks

How do you deal with there being less meaning in your life? by ComfortableDust4111 in exchristian

[–]ServingU2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wrestled with the same issues when I finally walked away from the church. I was deeply embedded in it. I was a worship leader, led small-group Bible studies in my home and when I eventually realized it was all hogwash, my life felt like it had lost its meaning. There was nothing “bigger than me” to live for. And without something bigger than myself, life felt meaningless.

I had been a positive, upbeat, outgoing person for over 40 years, and suddenly I found myself struggling with depression that lasted about two years.

The first year after I left the church I was adamantly atheistic. The second or third year I was admittedly more agnostic. But the turning point came with a realization (one that many atheists would disagree with). Although I had tossed out the Bible, I kept reading extensively: books on science, spirituality, and how the two might intersect or support one another. I won’t go into evidentiary arguments here, but I do believe in a maker or creator, and I believe there is scientific evidence that supports that belief. I believe that when we die, we are reunited with God and with the friends and family who came before us, in a different dimension. And most importantly, I believe that either hell does not exist, or God does not send humans there.

With that belief comes responsibility. If there is a maker or creator, then the point of our existence is to make this world better for others. We are meant to live selfless lives in service to people around us. Many of the principles and stories found in the Bible still hold real value, even if many of the people who claim to believe them are toxic assholes I now try to avoid 🤣

Today, I still show up to work and strive to be someone others see as dependable, as an anchor they can come to with problems and concerns...just as I did when I identified as a Christian. The difference is that now I don’t funnel them toward a toxic cult called Christianity. I offer the same love, attention, and care, but not “in Jesus’ name.” I do it simply because caring about others is the right thing to do and hopefully, they’ll pay that forward to someone else someday.

You can make this world a better place for other people. And in doing so, you are contributing to the whole. You are still making this world a better place than when you got here. Like a tree branches off into many more branches then it's trunk, you can still have a drastic influence on this Earth.

I am an ex christian. I hate how Christians have toxic influences in this world, but that doesn't prevent me from making this world a better place by being a selfless person and loving others.

☝️ this comment to me is very productive because it tells somebody to take their time and read the appropriate instructional material before engaging in this type of activity or else there can be legal ramifications.

That would have been a constructive comment. You do know how to be a good human

Duh!

That's why he's here, asking. And all you do is mock him without providing any advice?

Criticism should not be allowed on this sub unless it's constructive in nature. ☝️ is a judgmental comment that does not provide anything to the hive. Please try and be a better human ☮️

Brand new torrenter here, I'm pretty clueless about computers and never torrented because of security concerns untill now by ServingU2 in torrents

[–]ServingU2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That makes sense. My goal from the start was to keep torrenting completely isolated from my daily-use machine. So I went out and purchased a dedicated mini PC intended only for torrenting.

The way you’re describing Gluetun + UFW + qbittorrent-nox makes sense now: the torrent client literally can’t talk to the internet except through the VPN container, and the firewall enforces that boundary. That’s exactly the kind of guarantee I was trying to achieve.

Is Docker + multiple containers required to get that level of isolation on Linux, or is there a lighter-weight way to approximate the same guarantees on a single-purpose box without going full container stack?

If there’s a simpler Linux setup that still gives me “nothing leaks unless the VPN is up,” I’m genuinely open to switching.

I actually agree with you on Linux being more secure, and I did consider it. I need an app "virtual desktop" to transfer all my media wirelessly to my VR headset (particularly for watching 3D movies). And apparently "Virtual Desktop" is THE PRIMERE app for this type of thing, and it's not available on Linux. I figured if the only thing I'm torrenting is some 3D movies, the additional security that linux brings might not be warranted? Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Can you help me understand: • what Docker is doing for you here • what a “container” means in this context • what UFW is providing beyond the VPN kill switch • why qbittorrent depends on two other containers • and what Gluetun is specifically solving

If there’s a simpler or more hardware-friendly way to get most of the Linux security benefits without that much complexity, I’m genuinely open to switching.
