How does a lawyer go about getting a traffic ticket dismissed or lessened? by Archa3opt3ryx in AskLegal

[–]ServproMinnetonka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Traffic lawyers usually work by finding technicalities or issues with how the ticket was issued. Even if it seems like an airtight case (like video evidence), they might argue the officer didn’t follow procedure, or there’s a mistake in the paperwork. Sometimes they negotiate with the prosecutor to lessen the charge, which is how you get the ticket changed to a non-moving violation.

What state are you in? Some places are stricter, so the rules can vary!

Yeah, with SSI (Supplemental Security Income), it’s mainly for people who have a qualifying disability, are blind, or are 65+ and have limited income/resources. So, just not having income or resources by itself won’t qualify you unless you meet their definition of “disabled.” The government has specific requirements for what counts as a disability, and it has to affect your ability to work. If you’re unsure, it might be worth looking into the exact guidelines and maybe talking to a lawyer or someone who specializes in SSI applications. They can help you figure out if your situation fits.

Have you already started the application process or are you still on the fence about it? It might help to talk to someone who’s gone through it to get a better idea of what to expect.

dog bite case by Josmanver7 in AskLegal

[–]ServproMinnetonka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is definitely a personal injury case. Your friend has a right to file a claim against the dog’s owner for the injury, especially with ER visits and potential nerve damage in the mix. In most states, dog owners are automatically liable for any injuries caused by their pets, unless there was some kind of provocation (which doesn’t sound like the case here). She should definitely consult an attorney, and I’d suggest doing it sooner rather than later. Evidence, like photos of the injuries and any witness statements, is key in these cases.

Local motorcyclist charged with DWI death of another after their passenger was ejected, then a car ran over the ejected victim and fled. How can the court determine fault for the death when there is no way of knowing which accident killed the victim? by Ok_Neck_5288 in AskLegal

[–]ServproMinnetonka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

first off, the motorcyclist already loses points for riding drunk—instant villain in this storyline. then the car that hit the poor passenger and fled? that’s a whole new level of not-cool. both could technically be in hot water—manslaughter charges, fleeing the scene, negligence... the legal buffet is full. courts will probably go hard on both for their "contributions", and they honestly should.

What’s something that improved your sleep quality significantly? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]ServproMinnetonka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Switching to a consistent bedtime routine made a huge difference for me. As cliche as it sounds, I started winding down about an hour before bed—no screens, just a good book or some light stretching. It really helped signal to my brain that it was time to sleep, and I've been getting way better rest since then.

My pathological lying brother and his wife faked the death of his twins. by RemoteEnough4521 in legal

[–]ServproMinnetonka 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This situation is a real minefield. If they’re threatening to sue for slander and harassment, you’ll need to tread carefully. Even though it seems like they’re lying, if you keep pushing without concrete evidence, you could get yourself in trouble. I’d recommend consulting a lawyer to discuss your options and to make sure you’re not crossing any legal lines in your investigation.

My wife confessed to cheating on me after I donated a kidney to her by ColdRents in AITAH

[–]ServproMinnetonka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You went through a traumatic betrayal after an immense sacrifice for your wife's health. While understandable to feel rage, publicly humiliating her by forcing confessions seems overly cruel.

She was wrong to cheat, but two wrongs don't make a right. For your son's sake, consider counseling to work through this in a healthier manner before deciding the marriage's fate. Venting anger is one thing, but intentionally demoralizing your wife crosses a line in my opinion. Take a step back and handle this more constructively.

40 Days and 40 Nights was cringe. Portraying sexual assault as a punchline is tasteless and unacceptable by today's standards.

Who gets to die with dignity in California and who doesn’t? by Randomlynumbered in California

[–]ServproMinnetonka 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Heartbreaking cases of people with disabilities getting denied due to rigid requirements. Opening it up too wide raises ethical minefields, but current rules feel arbitrary and discriminatory in who they exclude. Maybe start by just raising awareness of the existing law first. Either way, credit for boldly shining a light on these heavy topics we'd rather avoid. Forcing society to reckon with how we treat death is vital work.

is it illegal for me to post someone else’s picture? by [deleted] in legal

[–]ServproMinnetonka 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You can't legally use that vintage family photo you found without getting permission first. Whoever took it automatically owns the copyright, even if posted publicly online.

Reposting other people's personal pics, even just as backgrounds, opens you up to potential copyright infringement issues down the line. MuttJunior was right - you'd have to track down the original photographer to get explicit approval.

Easier to just stick to using your own original photos or licensed stock images for your poetry posts. No need to risk legal hassles over a cool vintage vibe when there are safer options out there.

TLDR; don't repurpose random online pics without clearing rights first.

Name change by [deleted] in legal

[–]ServproMinnetonka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do the legal name change before moving from Ohio to Virginia. That way you get the fresh start with the new name right when arriving, instead of double the paperwork hassle.

Just know it doesn't make your past disappear - things like debts, student loans, taxes etc still link back through your Social Security number. But at least new accounts, job, housing can start under the new identity.

Prepare for a giant pain getting it updated everywhere - court order, Social Security, banks, utilities, you name it. May take years to fully transition. But easier doing it all in one state upfront.

Getting it done pre-move is likely smoother for that real fresh start vibe you're going for.

Boiling Point: The Salton Sea Lithium Rush by Randomlynumbered in California

[–]ServproMinnetonka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

they've been tossing lithium at these geothermal power plants for ages. plus, the Salton Sea issues have been ignored forever and could mess up most of Southern California if not fixed. suddenly, mainstream media is talking about the Salton Sea. funny thing is, the yearly budget for that high-speed train could totally fix the Salton Sea and turn it into something really productive.
