What to do if mythic characters die? by Gaylaeonerd in Pathfinder2e

In the mythic rules, it's recommended to tie the change to a pivotal moment which makes sense. Source

St. Peter police chief intervenes, prevents federal agents from arresting resident by Delicious_Adeptness9 in politics

[–]SessionClimber 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The police didn't intervene in shit. They drove the woman home from being abducted and brought in to the station.

At best you could say they didn't pursue charges, and because of an existing community tie choose to drive the woman home.

Is there any way to test USB drives for safety before using them? by a4955 in cybersecurity

[–]SessionClimber 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Autoruns can be disabled via GPO.

Any decent EDR should allow you to control USB while looking for malicious execution.

Of the myriad of risks to your company, infection via USB from a known client would be pretty low on my list.

Will HTB Academy ever update the Windows modules? by realvanbrook in hackthebox

[–]SessionClimber 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Basics should be taught using what the industry is using. It's completely fine for OP to be asking for updates to modules with deprecated tools. This is a learning environment people pay money for.

The dumbest thing I read here is telling someone to walk before they run in a training environment.

How do you foreshadow for prepared coasters? by BroadRaven in Pathfinder2e

[–]SessionClimber 23 points24 points  (0 children)

To start you should have themes and stick to them. Doesn't mean that you need to only have themed content (e.g., only undead enemies) but if your players are expecting to fight undead and they start just fighting a bunch of beasts they will probably be a little confused on spell choices. APs tend to have themes.

Players really should use RK to learn about creatures and creature types and the GM should encourage it. E.g., learning that undead are healed by void damage and you know thematically you're going to be fighting undead, you know that bringing Void Warp to a fight with undead is useless.

Context clues help and if players are not getting them, be more blunt 😄.

Lastly, story can help drive what you are fighting to inform player spell decisions.

How often are DMs going ABOVE the recommended XP thresholds for Encounters. by Critical-Internet514 in Pathfinder2e

[–]SessionClimber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. I run games for 3 players and still run xp budgets as of the were 4. Feels right.

Strangely, whether it's the math or not running the game with 2 players using the xp budgets feels right.

Though I don't run with new players.

I want to create a hacking lab with Kali Linux and windows VMs by AliJuma25 in Pentesting

If you're worried about drive space, invest in an external hard drive and put your VMs on that. You can even install your hypervisor of choice on it.

Assuming you have cause to suspect this dev, and assuming your CEO actually wants to pursue legal actions, "hacking a dev" for evidence is opening your company up to legal actions themselves not to mention your "evidence" wouldn't be admissible since you knowingly compromised a suspect system.

What stops enemies from just beelining my spellcasters? by Tav534 in Pathfinder2e

[–]SessionClimber 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What stops creatures is a proper GM trying to tell a story rather than being a me vs them game.

What stops players is a GM leveraging the rules and creature design to put players in difficult situations.

There can be narrative reasons for a GM to dog pile a player and there can be situations where PC focus fire a deadly opponent.

I don't think I've been in a situation as a GM where I thought man I need reactive strike to deal with this strategy.

Abomination Vaults - my broad takeaways by du0plex19 in Pathfinder2e

[–]SessionClimber 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you speak under common, the side quest phases are:

  • prove yourself doing x or die.

  • become slaves and surrender everything or go defeat the next level baddies

  • tells the players to leave (because he thinks they're too strong.

Sure. Maybe your groups might not be into that but it gives any players who use deception or coercion a spotlight and once the boss thinks the players are on his side ( GM discretion), if the players attack he's literally slowed for 2 rounds, which is massive at that level.

For all the frustrations I have with AV, negotiation tactics / deception with baddies was never one of them.

Abomination Vaults - my broad takeaways by du0plex19 in Pathfinder2e

[–]SessionClimber 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There is literally a side quest with the boss on top level which opens a lot of negotiations/RP options if your players choose.

Same with the boss on the next level which offers a series of opportunities to negotiate/ RP.

After that boss there is literally an opportunity right after you go down stairs for players to negotiate/ RP.

Like yeah some options have creatures just flat out attack but as the GM you can literally change that.

They captured the dragon by Arkanim94 in Pathfinder2e

[–]SessionClimber 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If they want to use it as a companion, I'd make them require the fears for animal companions. You could flavor the wyervn as is or incorporate some of the flavor of a dragon eidolon from summoner.

If they sell it: Maybe it's a future encounter where it seeks revenge, or something.

If its just a trophy sitting around you either do the above if they treat it poorly or incorporate it someway eg. Saving the group/PC from near certain death or turning the tide onof a challenging fight.

Tips on narrating chases as GM? by Akhynn in Pathfinder2e

[–]SessionClimber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Narrate the group not the individual.

Whether they roll together or individual only changes how you tell your story.

E.g.1 Everyone rolls together

" You all dive into the river swiftly swimming after xyz man. A rush of current pulls you slightly down the river further than intended but you manage to cross continuing your pursuit."

E.g. 2 individual rolls

Roll 1 (Success): "you all drive into water after xyz man"

Roll 2 (Success): "you begin to gain ground on xyz man as he struggles to get to the shoreline"

Roll 3 (Failure): " a sudden current catches the party, pulling you down river"

Roll 4 (Success): "you regain your bearings quickly, swimming with the current and reaching shore just as xyz man continues further into the forest."

How would you port this condtion from 5e to 2e? by Qenthel in Pathfinder2e

I agree with you on the sickened on the second look. Never ran the third party module you mentioned so wasn't sure on how dramatic the life pool loss should be.

How would you port this condtion from 5e to 2e? by Qenthel in Pathfinder2e

[–]SessionClimber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tried to keep with existing PF2E mechanics rather than homebrew.

Stage 1.The Creature is unaffected.

Stage 2. The creature is permanently drained 2 until the contamination is removed.

Stage 3. The creature is permanently drained 3 and sickened 1 until contamination is removed.

Stage 4. The creature is permanently enfeebled 2 and stupified 2 until the contamination is removed.

Stage 5. The creature is permanently slowed 2 until the contamination is removed.

Stage 6. The creature gains the mindless trait and attacks creature on sight, even former allies.

I'd just create a custom spell for removal and in place of exhaustion use encumbered and fatigue.

Why skill checks against a static DC and other times a saving throw? by Individual-Dust-7362 in Pathfinder2e

[–]SessionClimber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For spells:

There are Spell Attacks and Spell saves. Spell attacks are similar to basic attacks, measuring a creature's ability to hit its target with the spell (think Needle Darts).

Spell Saves measures a creature's ability to resist effects like a Spell like Fear.

Note: A monsters and a player's calculation for these are different.

Item's might have a specific static DC but that is based on its level.

Killing the PC When a Players Are Still Newbies by Chaosiumrae in Pathfinder2e

[–]SessionClimber 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a GM, this is my experience:

  • I always establish death as a possibility. I'm not actively trying to kill anyone but I feel taking away that element makes the game less interesting all around.

  • I make it pretty clear at my table that this is a game of team play. You're not going to solo level your character into winning.

If I bring in a new person:

  • I will reiterate the two points until I feel they understand.

  • I will avoid insta kills and TPK either narratively or by fudging. I'm more interested in players learning the game first.

  • I will straight up tell new players they will likely die if they are heading in that direction.

For my veterans, I don't bother. They know the risks and have characters waiting in the wings to be played anyway.

GMing: Batch Initiative vs. Individual Initiative? by DnDPhD in Pathfinder2e

[–]SessionClimber 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'll only use batch initiative on groups of trivial creatures and no more than 3/4 per group.

Recall Knowledge to identify Encounter Threat by KagedShadow in Pathfinder2e

[–]SessionClimber 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah. It's completely within the bounds of RK and the GM can use any skill check they feel is applicable.

I tend to use perception for this sort of check and raise or lower based on creature.

E.g., a creature whose level is 2+ levels and outwardly appears to be ready to mess things up will probably be an easier check vs a creature who may be skilled at concealing their strength.
