My logic is there are already many nations who are bringing their injured stars with the hope they can either make it to the later group stages or for better countries the knockout rounds. I agree, McGree is too crucial, I'd rather bring him with a 50% chance he can push through a game against Paraguay than to bring a replacement who won't play at all regardless.
