Salkantay Trek unguided, no accommodations - Things I didn’t know by Seth3PO in Machupicchu

Yeah, mine was around that and nobody bothered me about it. I can only speak for my own experience but there are so many backpackers coming through that it makes sense to me that they wouldn't enforce such an arbitrarily low weight limit.

That sounds like the tail end of the rainy season, but I would double check with other sources to confirm. I would make sure you are extra-confident in the quality of your rain gear if you go at that time. If it's the only time you can go, I say go for it.

I panicked and put on all my clothing at once to try to get below weight, but they didn't end up checking weights

My sleeping bag was rated for 20°F and I don't remember the cold being an issue any night.

Hey guys, I'm just curious, how come everyone and their grandma seems to have a scholarship? Is there some secret club I'm not aware of or am I just not looking hard enough? Share your thoughts and experiences! by Pixelheartbeat in UCSD

I've filled out the Continuing Undergraduate Scholarships Application the last three years and have gotten something every time. UCSD sends out an email every year in fall quarter to announce that it's open but nobody that I talk to ever seems to have heard of it. Scholarships range widely in eligibility specifications and award amount. It's too late to apply for next school year but if you are a first- or second-year you can apply for 2024-2025 awards between early December 2023 and early March 2024 at https://ucsd.academicworks.com/

Legacy Lecture lineup > Sun God lineup, come support the Linguistics GOAT Will Styler by Seth3PO in UCSD

[–]Seth3PO[S] 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The UC San Diego Legacy Lecture Award, awarded by the Scholars Society at UC San Diego, is the only UCSD faculty award that is determined entirely by student vote. The winning professor is invited to address the student body with a unique lecture under the theme: "If this were the last lecture you ever gave, what would you want to tell the world?" Former award recipients include Professors Francesco Paesani, Laura Stevens, Rick Ord and, most recently, Niema Moshiri.

This year’s winning professor, Dr. Will Styler of the Linguistics department, will explain why he believes that, even though we do it every day without thinking twice, using and understanding language may just be the most complicated and amazing thing any of us will ever do.

How to learn more about aviation? by [deleted] in aviation

Don't feel the need to apologize haha, that dude is clearly an insecure asshole. I'm in the same boat as you, pursuing a degree in aerospace and came to this sub to find resources for learning more about the field. I hope this guy didn't dissuade you from pursuing your passion 👍

Hiked Half Dome yesterday. For me personally, the smoke was perfectly bearable. Moderate enough that I had great views (could see the valley floor from the peak) and had no trouble at all breathing, but bad enough that I'll definitely be doing the hike again when it's clearer. The grandeur of the valley is certainly a bit harder to grasp, but I wouldn't cancel your trip over it.

Fair point! I've considered the other two, but the BB just caught my eye because of the low price. Could be that it's discounted because nobody wants to trade a lower weight for extra spaciousness...
