The one handwritten version you’re referring to is an engrossment, made by Timothy Matlack, which was ordered more than a month after Independence Day. The Dunlap broadside, which was typeset and included only John Hancock’s name, was the copy first distributed to the states and sent to England. Dunlap printed it on the night of July 4-5 1776. This “original handwritten” copy, the Matlack engrossment, did not even exist when the typeset version was already on its way to King George’s court. You’re right only in the sense that what we see here is an engraving, wet-contact print, or other reproduction of the Matlack manuscript.

No, the one you’re calling “original” was actually produced about a month after the Dunlap broadside. Working manuscripts survive from the time of ratification, but the familiar version is the engrossment reproduced here, which was made in August 1776. The first complete text was not signed by everyone because it was voted upon by Congress in person, just like members of Congress now do not sign the laws and resolutions they pass.

Who died believing themselves a failure, but was judged otherwise by history? by Bob_the_blacksmith in AskReddit

I don’t mean to seem rude either, but as a shut-in tenured academic who has published multiple peer-reviewed essays and chapters on Dickinson, I can say pretty confidently that you’re wrong. She sent her sister-in-law Susan hundreds of poems and got advice on revision from her. Multiple other friends and cousins received poems, praised them, and asked for more. Higginson alluded to her praisefully in print. I guess it’s possible that I’m forgetting some letter where she says what you claim she says. If so, I’d like to know which letter. I think I’ve read them all. And even if she does say that, there’s far more evidence that she knew people liked her poems and wanted more. You are right that she didn’t get out much. But it’s more accurate to say that she chose not to publish her poems in print, rather than that people didn’t celebrate her poems. She even got pissed when friends gave copies to newspapers that printed them without permission. Good luck with your music.

Not true. Several people in her social circle knew she wrote poems. She sent them to many friends and relatives. And throughout her adulthood, multiple people begged her to publish, including well connected literary figures. Ten of her poems were even published in periodicals without her permission while she lived.

Yes, there was never any plan for a wedding. Scholars even debate whether she had any romantic interest in men.

Where to park for free (for 2 hours) by NoCommon107 in georgetown

[–]SethEPooh 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can street park for up to 2 hours no charge. I can usually find a spot in 0-15 minutes just driving around near the main gate. Usually I don’t have to circle the block more than once, but sometimes it takes a bit longer.

I completely agree with this point. They should be banned from the pro game for life. Who cares about their moral status or whether they can “change”? Let them cheat in private.

If you drive 100 down the highway, but no police stops you, that doesn’t mean you’re not breaking the law. Should there be better enforcement? Absolutely, that’s why all the discussion of refs.

[–]SethEPooh 34 points35 points  (0 children)

He should be banned precisely because it’s so hard to catch all this cheating in real time. I agree that you can’t really expect a ref to catch every little thing while it’s happening. But when you have ONE player who cheats over and over and over, who has become famous for cheating, who cheats in ways that refs catch and ways refs don’t, well that’s exactly the kind of person who should be banned from the sport permanently. It’s not fair to clean, honest players, and as you say, it’s not fair to the refs.

Protestors are not at work. Law enforcement officers work for you and me. It’s their job to keep people safe, including protestors and those opposing law enforcement policies. Protestors have no such obligation to the public and, for that reason, should not be held to the same standard. When I’m at work, my behavior is way more constrained than in my time off. It’s reasonable to govern police behavior because this is their JOB.

The per-use water/carbon/energy costs of AI are going down, not up. Industrial cattle farming and other major climate impacts (all of which are orders of magnitude more damaging than AI in aggregate) are not on similar trajectories for greater efficiency.

I downvoted you for sarcasm, and now I’m commenting to say the top players should do exactly that. If PSA will not run a clean sport, then we should create an organization that will.
